We had conflicting views upon this sentence during our first game, so an official ruling would be nice.

Can you place two Statues during the same build
if you place the Mosaic in such a way that two Sanctuaries are created?

Does a diagonal form a closed area? Does the Sanctuary rule rely more on the fact that other pieces cannot fit within?

A Sanctuary is defined as an "enclosed" area in which none the remaining mosaic pieces will fit.

Individual diagonal squares are not part of the same area/sanctuary. They would be seperate from one another. (They would have to be joined by other empty squares on their "sides" to be part of the same area.)
