new achievement / badge ideas Wed, 31 August 2011 20:35
I'd like to see a badge for scoring 4 medals in one turn. That's happened maybe for and against me a couple times, including a game today.

[edit:]Happened to me again the other day. I was winning Operation Cobra 4-1, when my opponent played Their Finest Hour and scored 4 kills with 5 units.

How about winning a game on your opponent's turn? Could be from Ambush, Stiff Upper Lip or even a bad roll on a frozen river hex. Of course, it could be argued that this isn't an achievement, just dumb luck. But badges are awarded for rolling for stars, for example, which seems like even dumber luck!

There is a "Lucky Bastard Award - Totally wiped a full-health unit in a single dice roll" so this could be the "Unlucky Bastard Award - lose a game on your turn"

Here's some I thought about...

Artillery Bombardier - Kill four units in Artillery Bombard
Artillery Excellence - Kill four units in Artillery Bombard and won the scenario

Banzai Charger - Kill two units with Banzai War Cry
Banzai Specialist - Kill three units with Banzai War Cry
Banzai Excellence - Kill four units with Banzai War Cry

Banzai Master - Kill one full strength unit with Banzai War Cry at full strength

Long shot - Kill a unit at artillery maximum range

Votes of the Dutch jury for this Idea:

5.9

The Dutch jury member made a double flip on this one.

Here's the award ideas I like from above (part 1):
Steamroller for earning 4 medals in one turn.
Boomerang for winning on your opponent's turn!
Thin Ice for an opponent's unit dying from the ice.
Artillery Bombadier for killing 4 units with Artillery Bombard.

How about a "sneak out" medal.

I once found one of my units with only 1 figure left surrounded by 5 enemy units and targeted by hostile artillery. They managed to throw only stars and a lot of flags so I could slip away, back to the homefront.

For the record, I love the "four points in one turn" medal (the idea that started this subject). My own slight adjustment to the "sneak out" medal: one unit absorbing 12 dice of attack and still surviving--without medics and mechanics.

Another idea: loooooong games.

rolling 50, 75, 100 dice in a single game
playing 50, 75, 100 turns in a single game

(I once played a Red Barricades game that lasted 91 turns--I don't remember how many dice were rolled. It lasted 1.5 hours!)

Once M44 is available on an iPad - How about an "I was there badge" Razz

Using the GPS capability, it could work out that you were actually playing Omaha Beach....... on Omaha Beach!!

How about "infantry" awards :

- infantry officer : winning 2 (or more) medals on a single infantry attack (thus destroying an unit on an award winning objective) ;

- infantry leader : winning 3 medals on a single turn with infantry units (any kind of infantry) ;

- infantry hero (audie murphy's award) : winning 3 medals on a single turn AND thus winning the game with REGULAR infantry units (no engineer, rangers, paratroopers, snipers...).

- sniper's trainer : destroying at least 5 figures AND one unit with sniper's shots.

- sniper's master trainer : destroying at least 10 figures AND two units with sniper's shots.

Yeah, I like a sniper's badge: Sniper kills # of figures in a game.

NEWS: There's two new badges today online.
Desert Rats: win all Mediterranean as Allies
Desert Fox: win all Mediterranean as Axis

These are retroactive. If you've already achieved it, then you get it after finishing the side (win or lose).

Great (sarcasm)- a freebie badge for Colonels who, by definition, have won it all. Next time, make up something people have to work to get. They could at least have required them to win Knightsbridge, since they just added it.

Hey, Majors, Lt Colonels and Colonels deserve awards too. Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

It is appropriate to "gift" awards to those who have already qualified. Laughing Laughing Laughing
I have won every med. scenario at least twice from both sides (most - if not all - 3 times).
I've done the hard yards, as have others. Shocked Shocked Shocked

I am grateful to DoW for these new awards. Hopefully it will encourage newer players to play in the sand.
They may see them amongst our awards, look them up and then earn them for themselves.

I hope DoW are reading the threads about new awards and incorporate some of them in the future.

I like it: The Thin Ice award for an opponent's unit dying from the ice.

I wish you had not seen this happen once again...
Confused

But both our "Suossalmi" 's games were great with lots of thrill and tension.

Consider yourself lucky - I've played Med games lately where I've won in two or three turns (against humans).
That possibility was discussed in another thread; but people played against a robot.
That should be a medal: 3 card win!

9/8 Escape via the Coastal Road 6-1:
Brits played Attack-Right, for 2 hits,
I played General Advance, for 9 hits incl. 2 kills,
Brits played Assault-Center, for 1 hit on 8 dice,
I played Armour Assault, for 13 hits incl. 2 kills,
3 Stiff Upper Lips scored no hits,
Brits played Probe Left, for 2 hits and 1 exit medal,
I played Pincer Move: My first tank missed,
1 Stiff Upper Lip missed,
My second tank hit a single-figure unit, then did an overrun to kill another single-figure unit for the win.

9/9 Sidi Rezegh Airfield 5-1:
Germans start on Medal,
Brits played Direct From HQ, for 1 hit,
I played Armor Assault for 1 kill
Brits played Close Assault for 1 kill,
I played General Advance for 3 kills to win.

9/16 at Matanikau River 5-0:
I played Infantry Assault (Right), got 4 hits,
Marines played Probe-Center, for 1 hit,
I played Assault-Right, he Ambushed(?), but I got 3 medals,
Marines played ?
I played Attack-Center, rolled 2 grenades (w/3 dice) against artillery, then got 4 hits to kill his infantry against the baseline to win.

Now that we have the replay function, I can relive my own humiliations.
Replay calls this turns 1-5. So my "3-turn win" would be a 5-6 turn win under this system.
10/4 at Vassieux 0-4
1. Germans played Assault (Center) for two kills,
2. I played BEL for no kill-just two hits,
3. He played Attack-Center for one kill,
4. I played Probe-Left for one hit,
5. He played Recon-Center for one kill.
Looking at his cards now, rolling the same dice results, he could have won with ANY of his others: Artillery Bombard, Firefight, or Barrage.

Call it the UNCOMMON VALOR award.

Demihuman said today in a game

There should be a Tunnel Rat Badge.

I like it: Tunnel Rat Badge.

Only once did I seal a tunnel. So, I'd make the requirement: seal 2 tunnels.

I'd forgotten: There's a glitch on the tunnels, I reported, allowing you to roll twice to seal one.

I still like the idea of iron cross/MOH for a lone unit that kills off 3 units and survives the game...or something along those lines...Smile
PS guess you could add Victoria cross an the hero of Soviet Union also...depending which forces were used to achieve it.

How about a badge for killing off 2 units during your opponents turn? Played the Brits in FTF this morning. Ambush killed one followed by a Stiff Upper Lip that got the second.

Banzai!!

Eliminate one or more units with a full strength Japanese unit charging into combat.
One or several Japanese units maybe.

Or rather if the charge is made with a one figure unit as desperate/heroic last action.

Yeah, that's a really good & tough achievement to try for, like the Air Power ones! I think it would be extremely hard to get two kills on one of your opponent's turns - but in one game should be difficult enough.

As I said I don't care for "win all the scenarios" medal since I think you need that already to make Colonel. Now if they added more Russian scenarios plus Breakthrough and Overlord scenarios, then a "won it all on the front" like the new Mediterranean ones would be worth something.

We now have Iwo Jima awards for both sides on The Meat Grinder. It doesn't seem to be retroactive. Since it's nearly 70% Japanese/30% Marines, it should be easy to get the Japanese one. I'm not inclined to play it 5x as Allies to try to get the Marine's badge, when I detest the scenario.

Majors or above only

Win this medal by joining an open game, the cadet waitng to play immediatly leaves the game

I want to be your friend
Be an aspiring Colonel but have 20 cadets either turn turn down inviations or leave the game when you join
