Campaign Booklet : Opération TOENAILS version en 1.2 Sat, 28 July 2012 16:12
Hi,

At start, sorry for my awful english but i'm french. I hope you will excuse me.

As you all know, Jacques "jdrommel" honored us a few weeks ago a new campaign called "Operation Toenails". But a so beautiful campaign deserved a more dignified development. It is in this spirit that I undertook to revise the look of the campaign.

For this, I once again put Jacques involved, because after all, this is his campaign.

I begun with french version but now, I'm very proud to presente you the first release of the english translation.

Be quit, I have not translated this myself. Razz .

la traduction des scenarios a été faite par Jacques "jdrommel" lui même et le reste par Matt "hdescavernes". Sure they are best than me for this job. Razz

I am therefore pleased to offer this new version of Operation Toenails

Thanks again Jacques

A overview of campaign booklet :

As you guessed, the translation is not easy for us. Also, if you think we made mistakes, we will be happy to correct them.

Have fun.

Michel/Endicott

Confused
All the text (other than the front page and headings) is blurred when I open it on my Mac and iPad.

The design looks good though. Smile

The text is fine for me (on my laptop using Adobe Reader).

The first sentence on Page 2
"To play the Operation Toenails are needed, aside the core gamea, the Terrain Pack, Pacific Theatre and Winter Wars expanssions." isn't great english.

An alternate might be
To play Operation Toenails the base game and the terrain pack, pacific theatre and winter wars expansions are required.

It is very important for us to provide you a quality document.

I'm afraid ! Do we work for nothing ?

It seems, because nobody need a "correct" english release of this booklet.

Not sure what you mean, but if you want corrections:

Scenario 2, 3, 4 and 10 say medals in french.

The compendium cards use the singular terrain, not terrains.

"Use rules to units" is not correct: "Use rules for units".

For Spanish translation, of course you can begin it now.

Endicott,
Page 5 could use some cleaning up
One of the paragraphs state,
The road to Munda is long still, Though
Should say The Road to Munda is long, Though

Also one sentence says
The end justifies the "Meat"!????

Did you mean "means"

Thanks to Achtung Panzer for clarifying this.

Air Strikes & Blitz seem more like a punishment than a reward for the Allies winning the scenario. Do you mean Allies can launch Air Strikes? (Allied Air Strikes, Hill 317 Rule?)

Michel, may I contact you via PM?

Cheers

As a side note, I'd love to see multiple language versions of the scenarios on line, available as PDF download. As you all may know, the M44 Editor software allows multiple localizations, so the making of a PDF in any other language would be made in seconds.

The community could help on the translation of official scenarios. I'm 110% sure a lot of people would like to do it just for the sake of. And I really think it would increase a lot the number of players that nowadays don't play, because the language is a hard hurdle to bypass.

DoW could state a warning indicating that community translations may be not error-free and its use is under players responsability. Even the translators could be rated regarding the accuracy of translations, terms used, etc. so that potential players may have an indication of what to expect with the translated scenario.

Just something that came up while translating the FAQ. Very Happy

Hi Michel

I want to put something back into the Memoir community and so have made some edits and suggested changes to your excellent Operation Toenails project. I hope they help with v1.2 Wink

Page 1
In February 1943, the battle of Guadalcanal ended with an American victory as they gained a base for the re-conquest of the Pacific. They then began Operation CARTWHEEL, the planned capture of the main Japanese base of Rabaul in the South Pacific

The operation began with the landings in New Georgia to capture Munda airfield to support the naval operations in the Pacific.

The campaign took longer than planned, taking more than a month, from the initial landing on Rendova Island on the 30th of June, until the capture of the airfield at Cape Munda on the 5th of August.

US infantrymen and US Marines had to fight in the muddy tracks and terrible jungle full of mosquitoes and Japanese snipers. They had to assault fortified hills where the Japanese had dug machine guns into coral bunkers which the Americans had to clear with flame-throwers.

The New Georgia campaign for the capture of Munda airfield, codenamed Operation TOENAILS, is the theme of this new Memoir campaign with 10 scenarios. With this campaign, you will understand the fearsome battles in the jungles of Pacific islands.

In french "the end justifies the means" is "La fin justifie les moyens". The prononciation of the word "fin" is the same as "faim" and "faim" means "hunger". So, in the french release, I wrote a pun "La faim justifie les moyens" and I wanted do the same pun in english but it seems this doesn't work Razz (yes? no ?)

Hi

Page 2
The << and >> symbols are not used in English grammar so they can be taken out of your document e.g. when used here around Operation Toenails or the word bonus.

Page 4
Raid on Zanana Beach
At the end of the quote you have a full stop "." and an exclamation mark "!". Only one needs to be used.

Page 5
I'm afraid the joke doesn't survive the translation and the phrase "the ends justify the means" should be used.

Hope this helps.

This scenario is about retreating to a safe place. And retreating is not particularly honourable. Then what about:

"Safely retreating in front of the enemy is an unseasoned dish; it won't taste good, but it will satisfy your hunger"
