As stated in the other thread this will be a result thread.

Droopy has the honor of starting it:

Start of the war !

LooneyLlama : 4 medals - Droopy007 : 8 medals . 1 point for axis Very Happy !

I'll write a report tomorrow.
An impression after playing is that it seems, like Eric predicted, an easier shot for german, as it is not easy for allies to launch a proper attack...

Thx Eric, I really enjoyed the map, and the company Very Happy !

Guys, there's point to take ! This one is for us Cool ! (propaganda... is it good Jeronimon ? Wink Laughing Laughing ).

GO AXIS !

The Allies retaliate and answer the Axis victory with equal points:

Jaykay2010: 4 medals - Jeronimon: 8 medals 1 point for Allies.

Battle report:
replay battle

LooneyLlama said somewhere there was an advantage for the Axis? JIm and I never hit on that. We both lost as Axis. (Both 8-4)

Jim came up my left flank and I shot an armor unit, he took an infantry. 1-1 He kept comning up the left flank I defended and did some stuff on the other side too. At one point Jim played an Artillery Bombard, we both thought he could move the mobile arty and shoot, but that did not happen. He moved one hex and was not allowed to shoot.
I decide not to capitalise on that. (He was going to destroy a 1 fig armor unit.) and played a card elsewhere instead. Don't feel sorry for me I snagged a lone Italian hiding in the bushes. The turn after that Jim did take out the tank, but I retaliated by getting one of his armor units. The score 4-2 in my favor. We then both switched to the right flank where we had exchanged some shots before My infantry assault took out two units making it 6-2. A Close assault after that reduced two infantries to one fig. Jim played TFH and managed to get two of my units, after which I finished of the two one fig units for 8-4.

about the scenario: I will do that in the other thread.

Here is the replay of LonneyLlama vs Droopy007:

http://www.daysofwonder.com/memoir44-online/fr/battle/?id=31 760631

It's unfortunately kind of flawed : cards are on the wrong hands, and the count of medals stops at 1/0 for me.

The battle has been played especially on the right Axis flank first, Axis managing to wiped all the troops there without loosing a unit. I was helped by 3 lucky drawing : TFH, followed by ambush, followed by again TFH.
On the other side, Eric was short of cards on his left flank quickly, then in the middle. So he concentrated on thinning my troops on his right flank, while exiting one inf. He wasn't very successful due to quite bad dice on armor. He killed one armor unit though after the second TFH. 3/2 at this point.
I pushed on my assault from the left flank, finishing the last inf from the left allies flank, and starting to shoot at the center armor unit. Then, I avoided the town and instead went for the armor unit without retreat in the middle with a bold armor unit. Seeing no response to my agression, I was able to push the attack on his 2 center armor, which I killed quickly.
During that time, Eric launch an airpower, followed by a barrage and took out 2 more inf units. 6/4 in my favour. At this point, he has 2 isolated inf in the center, one in the town, the other in a bush. They were only supported by the arty. I concentrated my fire on them, staying far from any possibility of meaningful retaliation and soon killed one and took the city.
8/4, the end

Overall, it must have been quite a frustrating game for Eric, not being able to play where he probably wanted to, to counter what I was doing. And real better dice in the beginning of the game for me left him weakened to the point of no return, even if the dice evened out in the end.

The rematch soon Eric, when you should be able to have revenge Smile.

Or perhaps clorofila is a super tank commander and manages to get extra juice from a dried out tomato Smile

No, van Voort had it wrong: the Axis take the lead again, with a 2 points victory, van Voort 5 (21) - 8 (28) clorofila
Overall hit rates were almost the same (41% vs. 42%) but I think I had better cards.

I owe an apology to van Voort for getting 1/2 hour late respecting the beginning of the time frame I had informed him of. Sorry for that, but I had to run home from my job.

Sorry, by the way, for letting my team down in my match vs Jeronimon. It was a hard fought loss, if there can be such a thing !

Sir Jeronimon, I have done my duty and filled the mission ! The Rommel tanks were stopped !

You had a good nose to choose me for this 2 points match ! Cool

My unlucky opponent cannot done anything except crying (no dices and no cards for him and the opposite for me). Trentdep, you are welcome for a revenge when you want.

Artimon vs Trentdep

Well, this one should be easy to report on...

Cliff note version : 26 rolls @ 31% vs 57 @ 47% - including 18 of 31 for a 58% rate against Infantry...

I started with three left flank cards, a Dig In, and a Barrage. The enemy opened with an Air Attack, weakening 3 of the 4 units on my left side of the map.

I was hampered by left flank cards of little use, and *really* ugly marksmanship. The few units that I was able to move in the center and right flank missed so often that advances there were stopped before they really got started.

The combination of not being able to bring many arms to bare, along with the poor marksmanship pretty much turned this into a turkey shoot for the Allies.

31% certainly isn't the worse I've rolled, but combined with only 26 rolls, vs 57 rolls at 47%, and the result was about what I might expect - hell - I couldn't even take a lone tank out with a Barrage!

Not sure what to say about my opponent - nice guy, but in regards to play / strategy, I don't feel as if I have actually played against him yet.

If you're in need of a laugh, here is the replay : Oddly, my cards show up on my opponents side of the board. Is this typical - something I've never caught on to, or a bug?...

Great battles commanders! Very close score after the first round. 4-3 Allies. Lucky91 really set up his escape beautifully as sdnative was about to overrun him. Poor trentdep had bad cards(all left flank cards with no units there and bad dice). Artimon counterattacked well and escaped units for the win. In my opinion, our commanders, except me, played it the best way to win as the Allies. Move center units over to the rt. flank to attack, and then if the cards are good, escape. The Germans have to counter that by pressuring on their center left and left flank. Of course you have to have the cards to do that. All in all, I was happy how it played out.

Axis do not really have the forces for a attack on their left flank and is easy for the Allies to roll them up or exit with the right cards.

sdnative,

True, cards always play a factor, but there are plenty of left center units to win. They have the road and the wadi to get in position. Also, there is no good counter against the exposed unit in Derna. It can be eliminated fairly easily and if the Allies try to protect it by moving forward that will be an opportunity to defeat him. The Italians also have an engineer and a special force unit to do this. Finally, the results bear out my prediction that the Axis have an edge. I know it's only a small sample but the results so far have the Allies winning at 40%. Hopefully, you'll like the next scenario. In this one, I really don't know who has the edge, though the Germans must get good right flank cards to pressure the Allied left. I'm trying to make the Med. Theater scenarios more than just a tank battle. As we go along and get to Sicily and Italy there will be less reliance on armor. Desert warfare was predominately flanking with armor, so these early scenarios depict that. I'm working on both Pacific and Eastern theater scenarios for another tournament later. I think there are more opportunity for terrain and consequently strategy play.

This may have been the most amazing game I've ever played on Memoir44. Victory was snatched from the jaws of defeat for the Axis. If this was the Pacific theater, I'd commit seppukku.

General Jeronimon, don't bother sacking me, I will have my resignation on your desk in the morning.

P.S. Congratulations to Jim for an amazing victory. It was one exciting game.

Result for Round 2 - The Relief of Tobruk

It certainly was a 'relief' too, that this battle managed to end at all! ... with Eric playing as the Allies and myself as the 2pointer Axis player, we managed to throw a combined total of 183 dice!!!!!!

This fight shall now become known as The Battle that Nobody Wanted to End !

Both sides we're throwing amazing sets of duds one turn after another .. particularly shameful throwing (for both sides) was made vs tanks, with Eric mustering 18%, and myself managing a wholly unimpressive 24%.

The game felt like it became a bitter slug to the death .. neither side willing to admit defeat, both armies dragging their men and vehicles to the limit in search of the crucial hits, that kept on evading each of them, until finally .. finally ... the Axis scraped through victorious. Not without some almost comical throwing on what should have been the Allies victorious turn ..

Hopefully, you can witness and marvel at this extreme bout of miss after miss after miss using the replay feature Eric has posted above ... if you haven't taken a look yet, I would encourage you to go through it ...

... Watch in awe as the tanks repell one shell after another, reel in horror at possibly the worst Armour Assault in the history of Memoir 44, shriek with fear as stars and flags fly, and then, if you are still able ... fall out of your chair as the final , final, push for control of the hill on Halfaya Pass resorts to a comical 'here, you take it, no no, i insist, YOU have it ... no after you '.

It's what dreams are made of ..

Wink

Jim

A good day for the Axis then:

Alas my friends, I too failed to relieve Tobruk. Sad

[url=http://www.daysofwonder.com/memoir44-online/en/battle/?id=31 886588]replay battle[url]

Droopy told me before the match he had played it twice and twice the allies won. I myself had played it twice before also and lost twice as allies (8-9) and Axis (7-9).

But still the sun was coming up over tehe desert and we went at it. We both marched up our respective right flanks with Droopy taking Sidi Omar on his second turn. He then secured that flank and sterted in on the middle section. Meanwhil I did take the double objective next to halfaya pass and briefly it was 4-4.

But Droopy quickly killed two weakened infantries in the middle and I countered with my specialists to kill a two fig armor unit, but failed to “flag” a other armor unit one hex away from the EXIT. The next turn this armor unit did exit and Droopy shot an infantry. Positioning another armor unit for escape. 8-5 the score. I then launched a mad attack (as only real british officer can do left al kinds of cover and tried to get medals for the honour of it. That got me two and after that Droopy could ride his armor unit triumphantly into Fort Capuzzo for the win. 9-7

Droopy v Jeronimon: 1-0
Dice 55 v 53 percentage 45% v 42%

Rematch
We also played the rematch and it was a nightmare for me Wink
Th score of 9-2 for Droopy confirms this. Brr 0 for 4 on this scenario for me.
(Anybody want to play? Smile )

One remark: in the rematch I tried to Air strike with the germans with an recon card but was not allowed to. Rigth licking in the maps tells me german tanks get three hexes and english (and italian) tanks only two, but also that I as the germans can airstrike with a recon card.
If this is not the case, please tell us in the info, if it should work it needs to be fixed.
For the match result I can tell you, it would not have mattered . 9-2 pffff Confused

Droopy: Well done and I enjoyed the matches (yes also the second one) very much. Always a pleasure to play you.

I am already looking forward to the next time we will meet in this tournament, where I will get revenge (hopefully Razz )

Jeronimon,

Blitz rules are not in effect for this scenario. Where does it say you can air strike with recon card? It doesn't say anything about it in the description. I know it's 1941, but in researching this battle, the Allies, if anyone, had air superiority.

Also, I specifically made the Italian armor move only 2 hexes. You can make armor from any country move 2 hexes if desired. You cannot make British armor move 3 though. I did this to balance the scenario.

Eric

P.S. All rules for each scenario are specifically stated in the description. Some of the rules have to take into account what is allowed online at this time. I try to include an explanation for any rules that do not follow the board game rules. examples: Italian units only retreat like normal ones and steep hills take 2 movement points from any direction. There are others also and I do make sure that you are aware of them in the description.

HI Eric

As I tried to explain, but failed to do properly, I see that I typed right licking the map. Razz
I can assure you gentlemen that I do not lick my computer screen (neither right nor left nor middle.) Wink

Where did I find this info? When I right click a random hex the "Blitz card" pops up, it states I can air strike with a recon card.
As I have no knowledge of editing scenarios I would say either remove the Blitz card so it does not pop up on right clicking the map or if that is not possible state so in the info. But that is more (and when I say more I mean entirely) your expertise.

I had also noted the Blitz Rules right-click information card on a previous match; but since Eric is usually perfect in his scenarios descriptions and there was no reference to Blitz Rules in Relief of Tobruk, I played a Recon card (to try the Air Power) when I could also use it in the regular way; it did not worked as Air Power and I didn't pay much attention to the issue afterwards. But Jeroen has a certain point: a wrong information comes up when you right click an hex. Whether this can be corrected or it is a limitation of the scenario editor is something that I am ignorant about.

I enjoyed playing them too Very Happy ! It is always a pleasure to play a gentleman !

The first was indeed a fierce battle. I really liked your final mad rush Wink! That I took sidi omar so quickly saved the battle for me, as it forced you to slow your attack on my left flank, and at the same time left you quite unprotected on my right.

The second, well, was far too unbalanced to be really fun for either of us. I'm glad you enjoyed it anyway Smile. I can't say I didn't, for I had the perfect set of cards and good dice. All left 2 times in a row, and other left flank cards... How can I expect more ?

The first was definitely more interesting ! And of course I'm eager too to grant you a revenge match Very Happy !

About the map itself. It strikes me how much the outcome of the battle on the axis left flank (allies right flank) is determining for the battle. I played it 2 times each side now. In 3 of them, the allied succeeded to overcome the axis on that flank and won the battle... Jeronimon failed (not without trying seriously and restlessly) as allies against me, and he lost.
What's your experience of it ?

It is a very enjoyable map again ! Thx Eric !

Well done Jaykay ! It's now 0-3 for Axis Very Happy ! Follow the lead team, our champion showed us the way Laughing Laughing !

I did not realize that the blitz card comes up when randomly clicking any hex. If it's not noted in the description it's not being used in the game. However, I will continue to make an effort to include rules that are not being used in the scenarios. I try to make the scenarios as bug free as possible but until an update is made available we're just going to have to hang in there. Hopefully, it's not taking away the enjoyment of playing these games. I think they play as well as can be expected for what we have at this time.

I've now played this map 4 times each side (only 2 victories in 8 matches, both as axis...): allied right-flank battle was only determinant in 3 individual games - although the replay option is not properly working in 2 others.
This is easily one of my favorite desert scenarios, as there are plenty of options and tactical solutions. The number of tanks could be inferior, but then we would be talking about perfection Very Happy

Eric,

No enjoyment was taken away from the game. And yes, like you, I do not like it when special rules and stuff do not function. But because I know what a perfectionist you are, I just attributed it to an oversight.

And I still think we are "play testing" your scenarios, so will gladly point out little discrepancies like these.

Team wise
I daresay the allies are a bit behind this round, I do hope our teammates will pick up the slack we both left for them. Smile

Jeroen,

Please continue to point out any bugs or discrepancies in my scenarios. I work hard to make them just right but like the Blitz card sometimes they are missed. I now know to include no Blitz rules in the descriptions when appropriate. Thanks.

While I am not part of this tournament I have enjoyed playing Relief of Tobruk.
2 matches, battles, 4 victories, 2 coming from behind to win.

My 1st Allied battle was won on the Allied right with 2 units exiting.
1st battle as Allies

My 1st Axis battle was mainly fought in the centre with the Axis coming from 3-6 to win 9-6. The final shots were fired on the Axis left flank but as a General Advance had been played the battle could have been won in any section.
1st battle as Axis

My second battle as Allies started with he Axis pushing hard on both flanks. Soon I was down 1-6 with only 1 infantry left on my right flank. (That was it for that section.) I countered on the left and centre bring the score back to 5-5. The final actions were in the centre for the Allies win.
2nd battle as Allies

My second battle as Axis started with me advancing on my right as that was where my cards were. Despite good cards my dice took a while to warm up. The Axis were soon 1-3 down. A lucky turn 3 saw the Axis get 4 medals (1 objective, 3 units) with a probe on the right. A 1 fig panzer unit finally exited in the centre. (Not shown in the replay.)
2nd battle as Axis

These matches show, despite the other comments above, that this scenario can be won or lost in any of the sections. With 9 medals required a slow start can be overcome, or a fast start can run out of momentum. A great scenario Eric.

Thanks for sharing Phread! It is very informative to watch how you develop your strategy for each of these games. Did you happen to see JayKay's and my battle? It's a few posts above. I had an 8 to 5 lead with 4 dice against a lone inf. unit to win and lost the game 9-6! It was one of the most exciting games I've played. Stay tuned for more Med. theater scenarios. I've got 2 more in North Africa and then on to Sicily and Italy.

Strategy Question Strategy Question What's that Question

If I'm lucky I can plan 1 turn ahead and my opponent act or reacts where I can counter. Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes

I'd love to have some strategy. How much GI does strategy cost Question
Is it similar to the extra GI that good cards and dice cost Question

As the victim in Phred's first two games, I can attest to the fact that he does have a strategy.

Either that, or he was spending lots of extra GI's to get good rolls when it mattered.

I felt so humbled after that match that I haven't played an expert scenario since.

The worst part was that he was hardly paying attention, a riveting cricket match on the telly taking most of his mental capacity...

Back to basic training for me.

Relief of Tobruk (Round 2)

Artimon (allies) 6-9 clorofila (axis), 1 point for axis.

Battle replay: http://www.daysofwonder.com/memoir44-online/en/battle/?id=31 963960

Do not be deceived by the numbers: this was a balanced match, that could have went either way if just Artimon would have practiced the scenario some more, I believe.

The allies played aggressively over their left flank and its edge in the center, but with few troops (and Infantry! some balls, Artimon!). I was lucky enough to have cards to move the tanks in that area and solved the problems: still, 2-2 by turn 10/24.

Next stage was a bit chaotic, with some Armor Assault, General Advance, Recon in Force, Firefight and Assault cards. By the end of turn 21/24, the score was 5-5! Unfortunately for Artimon, there were many severely injured infantry units in the center of the board by this time and I had 4 armor units in the area (although 3 with only 1 figure); I grabbed the last 4 medals from those infantries, including the taking of Fort Capuzzo - not before losing one of the armor.

Quite a match on a beautifully designed scenario, and balanced, in my opinion. Artimon was a great opponent and a gentleman too. Thank you!

Sir Jeronimon, the fox of the desert has outnumbered my men with his armor. We don't let him run into our positions but failed by too much losts among the troops of our glorious majesty.

Thanks to Clorofila for the nice moment spent yesterday night, even if the end was not this one expected ... Laughing

Relief of Tobruk (Round 2)

Trendep( Axis) 9-1 lucky91 (allies), 1 point for axis.

sorry for my team , a disaster for Allies.

trendep played well and I played badly :I was passive(no attack on my right flank and I made a big mistake ( I used the card " close fight " for only artillery and lost the card for nothing )

trendep attacked with his panzers and destroyed my units easily

http://www.daysofwonder.com/memoir44-online/fr/battle/?id=31 948551

I won with axis (9-7) but uselessly.

In any case a very great scenario and a very good opponent! Smile

Relief of Tobruk results

Trentdep v Lucky91 9-1 win for the Axis

The marksmanship and command just weren't there for the Allies.

The Axis never made a move on their right flank, but rather hammered the Allies in the center, taking few casualties, and never really allowing the Allies to go on the offensive.

The armor on the Axis right flank were kept in check although they were chomping at the bit to go. Once released in an Armor Assault, they rolled through the units at Sidi Omar and Fort Capuzzo with little resistance.

Lucky and I played the other side and the cards and dice were much better matched, making for a very enjoyable and challenging game for us both.

Great map Llama !!

van Voort 9/71 v 2/14 Sdnative

Aided by better cards, so rolled 71 dice to 43 with a 51% to 33% hit rate

Actually in retrospect I didn't have especially good cards.

I just had better than Sdnative who appeared to have a hand full of probes.

I think I had one Assault the whole match that I drew at the end.

However, it was the airstrike on his right at the start of the game that crippled him there and left him unable to make good progress.
