What's in a name?
|

Imagine these WW2 heroes didn't have names like Patton, Rommel or Montgomery, but were named "player..." Wouldn't that be boring?
I just played a lieutenant-colonel with such a "player..."-name. I won't recognize him on the field, that's for sure.
So guys, be original! Give yourselves an original name and avatar instead of sticking to a serial number!
So when you die in battle history will remember your name.
Cattle die; kinsmen die; you yourself die;
I know one thing which never dies: the fate of the honoured dead.

I once asked a Major why he never picked out a name and he said he was just too lazy!

This could be a promotion requirement: having your name changed in one that doesn't contain "player"

I admit that this kind of attitude drives me crazy!! I'm not sure why I care, but for some reason I do.

I guess it's because a lot of use consider ourselves as members of a worldwide community. And you sense more related to another if you at least know the other fellows name.

Yeah - I imagine that if you are a ratings troll, and inviting lower ranked players to scenarios such as RB, it kind of makes sense to use the anonymous name...

Fairly perjorative assessment there
I tend not to have issues inviting Cadets, and if you care about rank you tend not to play them unless you are very sure of beating them

Not sure that I commented on one's desire to NOT invite Cadets, but rather the opposite...
But yes - the use of the word ~ Troll ~ was certainly a hint that I meant my comment in a disparaging way.
" ...if you care about rank you tend not to play them unless you are very sure of beating them."
Perhaps you meant to write " rating "? And would that not also be a somewhat belittling comment? I can't imagine anyone wearing a star would begrudge or avoid Cadets, just because there are more ratings points at stake when they play against them. Or is this just something that is discussed only in the general officers' club?...

I think van Voort means that if you care a lot about the rating and rankings therein you would not be playing lower ranks and lower ranked players very much. If you win you don't get a lot of extra points and if you lose you fall hard.
I for one have experienced no problems in inviting cadets Lt's and captains to the battlefield. I have even been thanked for inviting them. Which is of course unnecessary, but seems to hint at the possibility that they have reservations against inviting higher ranks.

Hardly, I'l play anybody (Since making Col I have played 44 games against Cadets and won 75% of the time, hardly a stellar performance)
Yes I did mean ratings, not rank.
I'm not sure that if you care about ratings playing cadets is the way to go especially (except on their very first game)
Their rating is very low (will be sub 1500), so you get few points when you win and lose a lot if you lose
And there are plenty of players out there who are new to M44 online, but not new to the game.
Seems low risk and low reward to me, however if you can play Juno versus neophytes and win both sides 80% of the time you will have a high rating and deserve it.
If you are inviting them to RBF or the Meat Grinder I'd feel differently
See my discussion on the Year End Rankings
There are plenty of issues with the rating system - and it is possible to be a high rated player without getting promoted much

That's why I am looking at other criteria to find the experten.

What Jeronimon says.
Also note that one of the requirements to make Col is to play Cadets - I wonder why DOW put that in if they did not think some of us would not do so of our own accord

I think the answer to your last wondering can be found over in the Ticket to Ride online game. In that game system, high ranked players (with the international ranking system they use) will only play other people who are way at the top so they aren't risking as many points in the event of a loss. Personally I think that's kind of missing the point of playing a game, but competition runs deep...
So by requiring that you play against new people, they ensure that the regular players will continue to interact and 'bring up' the new recruits! I think it's a plan that is working quite well, actually!

Valid points gentlemen, and based on R's input specific to Ticket To Ride high ranked players' avoidance habits, as well as the Colonel promotional requirement re playing Cadets, perhaps there is a bit more of that going on than I had thought - or at least the propensity to do so is there...
And yeah - I was referring to trolling taking place in the RBF, Meat Grinder and such ( if there are others, I've avoided or missed them so far - perhaps Counter Attack? ).
I think I have a lot more trouble actually finding Cadets that will accept an invitation, than I do avoiding them - not that I do, I'm just suggesting that it's rare to receive an invite from Cadets.

I think it's logical you/we get few invites from cadets. (Or them saying yes to invites) Some of them don't know ow to invite, it is less intimidating playing against a lower rank, and they are only cadets for a very short period of time (hopefully )

This morning I took a look at my ranking and I was nr 26.
Then a fairly new player invited me for Pegasus bridge. We played both sides, I lost (I blame both cards and dice ).
I looked at my ranking again and it was 70!
So it's true, you better not loose when you're playing lower grades.
