Those things are awesome ... i remember taking my boy on one of those in the UK, he sat in front of me as a passenger, and we both set off down the track shouting "No brakes, No brakes" !!

I left it as long as I could before fear took control and the brakes were applied in order to navigate the bends safely!

Great memories ...

Jeronimon / Jeroen,

At long last, a glimpse into the real you!!!! Gamer and overall thrill seeker!! Laughing

Thanks again for your insightful history lesson and of course a shot of what your "real life" is like...full speed ahead!!!

Boy...except for Geoff and van Voort...scores on our side....well...maybe we should include the "fun" factor into the score...might even things out a bit!!!

If that is a small theme park ride...don't know if I would care to venture on a big one over across the pond!!

Off to BERLIN we go...has been fun and more fun to come.....have the scenario master mind, Looney to end the Eastern Front and then Looney to start the Pacific Front!!!

Jeroen,

I got to experience one of those rides at a ski resort near our house. They set it up in the summer. You have to take the ski lift to get to the top of the mountain to begin the ride. Like Jim, I tried to go as long as possible before applying the brakes. I started to lose it and had to apply them or I would have flown off the thing. My boys enjoyed it but my wife got part way down and stopped and walked the rest of the way down the hill. It is a very fast and somewhat dangerous ride.

Jeronimon, I'm always impressed a lot in front of commemorative stones / cimeteries with the names of all the people killed during the war.

The worst thing is than most of them were young people (around 20 years) Crying or Very Sad

In France, in all village, we have some commemorative stone raised after the first World War and the "updated" with later dead. Lot of people should think that's not anymore useful. But, I think they are very important, as they help us to remember the final result of each war : lot of people dead in both side ...

For me it is always a little strange to see German memorials. When I was in school and growing up, the Germans were still the "bad" guys. Their was no "understanding" of the other side so to speak.

So seeing a little rustic town remembering their own sons and fathers who fell in the war still feels a bit strange if it's the Germans. That's how ingrained your upbringing can be.

Luckily we live in more enlightened times and we try to solve more and more conflicts through politics rather than open fighting. Let's hope humanity continues on this path.

WoW! That was serious. So now for a lighter note: Let's show those Allies Berlin is ours and will not fall. Axis unite against the forces of evil!

Here a fine example of how dutch artist Ton Smits portrayed the Germans from a free Eindhoven in 1944. He is surprisingly mild and demur. None of that hard propaganda stuff, but finding the humor here.

SAC Helcat,

The Battle of Berlin has begun and gladly report an ALLIES win, 12-7, over the design mastermind, LooneyLlama!!

What to say...1 hr, 1 min, 49 turn battle of attrition, just as van Voort intended no doubt!!

Numbers were similar as far as percentages go...ALLIES...INF 40-72=56%, AXIS 18-34=53%, ARMOR 9-26=35%, 13-34=38%, ART, same for both 0-0=0%, overall
ALLIES 49-98=50%, AXIS 31-68=46%, obvious difference...30 more die for ALLIES.

Things started slowly and cautiously...each side shooting away from across the river..not much success...did manage to dislodge him from a town or 2...sporadic killing of figures up until turn 7, DFHQ, got my 1st kill of unit in town on B6.

From there..more movement and positioning of units...turn 13...moved ARMOR onto bridge on my LEFT..still only 2-1 AXIS at this point and no ALLIED units across river yet...draw AIRPOWER after this turn...turn 14, Looney plays PM 2-2, moves ARMOR forward, kills my ARMOR on the bridge..3-1 and has ARMOR in position for the AA in hand for his next move.

Here..a turning point on that flank...play my just drawn A/P....8-8 roll..kill sniper and reduce his ARMOR and INF to 1 figure each and serious crimp in his planned AA, 3-1 AXIS. Following next 2 turns...kill his 3 disabled units...he gets one and thus 4-4 ALLIES and his RIGHT FLANK effectively done unless I move my units up into range.

From here, the battle turns to the CENTER...Looney making his defense around the BUNKER and the cluster of towns there...luckily I have a variety of CENTER cards..play 6 in a row there...move ARMOR and INF up and able to chip away at his defense...kill 4 more units to his none...8-4 ALLIES..after turn 29.

Battle rages on in ALLIES CENTER AND RIGHT for 20 more turns...slowly killing 3 more units...Looney gets 3 more...finally able to advance ARMOR up and get my last kill on a single fig INF in the REICHSTAG...final of 12-7.

Intense and deliberate battle...key obviously was my A/P of turn 15...ruined his grand plans for his AA and eliminated his forward units on that flank....was a lucky draw the turn before and max dice for effect...

Thanks for the good battle Looney and to van Voort for the BERLIN scenario...whew...fitting end to this round!!! Good luck ALLIES and let's take this FINAL ROUND and claim BERLIN and win a ROUND!!!

http://www.daysofwonder.com/memoir44-online/en/battle/?id=36 111499#replay:turn=1

End the tournament 4-6....inching my way up in the improvement ladder!! Thanks to Looney for the "thinking" man's scenarios and to all my teammates and opponents...much fun and will go off to the PACIFIC and enjoy a little R & R and await your arrival there!!! Oddly enough...face Looney in the 1st match there!!!

My last game in this series .. I just about eeked out a 12-9 win over Dugrim for the Allies struggling to overcome him at times, but reaching Berlin at the death to grab 4 medals on my last turn (at 8-9 down).

It's a pity we can't get the Majority Objective rule to work, as that would give the Axis a slight favour in defending, to be fair to Dugrim, i think I only won this (and by only a slight margin) because i was able to get the 2 medals objective without having a majority .. If i had needed the majority he may have been able to cut my advance ..

Well played sir ! Well done Axis .... we were beaten by the better team over all. Thanks for my fellow team members for their bravery, next time we will overcome! Wink

Here's to the Pacific theatre !! Very Happy

Thanks so much Eric for hosting such a fab tourney !

I just wanted to congratulate Tony on a well played game. He played it perfectly. He was very cautious at the beginning to whittle me down. As the Germans you don't have many chances to counter, unless the Soviets are too aggressive. Once the front line is removed and the bridges crossed, it's only a matter of time before it's all over.

vanVoort, thanks for sharing such a good scenario with us. It is very innovative and challenging.

Although it was april 1945 and High Command supposedly could not give me good orders, I got almost perfect orders from High Command. The three cards did not bother me at all, got what I needed when I needed it. The dice treated me nicely also, I had superior percentages (especially on armor)

Luc v me
111 v 93 dice
67 v 41 percent on infantry
40 v 18 percent on armor

49 v 31 percent total

Short geography lesson, sorry I did not spot this earlier Wink : Eric, I think know the river in Berlin is not the Spee, as it says on the map, but the Spree (Also because of my hobby there is an abandoned park there the SPreepark, used for some scenes in the action movie Hanna by the way. Smile )

So, what happened?: we plinked away at each others units over the Spree. I sniped the russian sniper pretty quickly and my snipers were gold. Luc did not manage to get troops across the Spree on the Reichstag section or the middle. On the section where the german artillery is het managed to get two armor units over the river and two infantries, but although it took a couple of turns I destroyed his unit. He did manage to kill my sniper there in the end.

I was leading the score all game and as stated High Command from the bunker gave me what I needed to not only survive, but wage war on the Russians. I had to trust them to come up with the right cards and sent my units forward on their wishes. And they came through, big time!

Replay: the last battle
The score: 12 - 6 figures: 46 - 34

Poor Luc was outcarded and outdiced and saw his troops dwindling away one figure at a time mostly. A la prochaine copain! Cool

Jeroen,

Nice victory! By the way, I did not write this scenario, vanVoort did. However, isn't he right? The Spree does flow through the center of Berlin. If not, which river is it?

OOps! I see vanVoort mistakenly wrote Spee instead of Spree. Sorry.

SAC Helcat:

It is my pleasure to inform you that we have taken Berlin, but not without a tough fight, where the outcome was in doubt right up to the last.

Final score: JAParker over JJs Juggernaut 12-10

Details here:

http://www.daysofwonder.com/memoir44-online/en/battle/?id=36 199917

The Russians began by advancing on their right flank, but the action quickly spread across the map. The Russians took an early lead, but the Germans battled back gamely. At the end of turn 16 (about halfway through) the Russians were in the lead 6-5. The battle continued to rage on all fronts, and by turn 20 the Germans had taken the lead (7-8, Russians vs. Germans). Things swung back our way by turn 24 (9-8).

At this point I came into possession of a BEL card, and began to set up the opportunity to use it. I knew that I could get 2 points with it (by moving into the Reichstag), but probably not 3 (due to the disposition of the German forces). So I concentrated on the center, attempting to take out an infantry unit in the front line. That took longer than I would have liked, and in the meantime the casualties were mounting on our side. By the turn 32, we had suffered two more casualties, and the scored stood at 9-10. On turn 33, however, I achieved my aim, and evened the score at 10-10. No further casualties were suffered on turn 34, and on turn 35 the BEL allowed me to move an infantry into the Reichstag, thereby claiming two medals, and with them the victory at 12-10.

Congratulations to JJs Juggernaut on a well-played match. His snipers gave me fits throughout, and without the BEL card I may well not have pulled this off!

JAParker,

Nice victory and good ending to the tournament for you and well played by JJ's Juggernaut...tight battle!!

Looks like we are finally winning a round...has been a while and hoping we can continue and end it on a high note by the taking of BERLIN! Cool

Think it is 3-1 ALLIES this round....the 1 being Jeronimon's impressive victory over the un-LUC-y Luc....looks like he had his chances, dice didn't go his way....misses and total...111-93..lots of shooting there! Very Happy

Good luck to the rest of our brothers and see all or most of you in the warm waters of the PACIFIC!!!

A tough, well-fought battle. Russian engineers showed super-human abilities, with multiple kills after being at death's door themselves. An early Barrage and mid-game air strike combined to knock out my artillery. The role of German snipers was played by Trooper Vanderbilt from F Troop, with only 5 hits in 17 shots, mostly against infantry.

JK2010,

As of now, this round is 4-1 ALLIES, 3 matches to play, van Voort's 2 pt game and 2 others. If we win all 3 round would end 8-1 us and 50 - 41 end score, best case for us and end within 9 pts.

Otherwise, worst case, 4-4 round and 53 - 37, 6-3 us for this round and 52 -39, 7-2 round and 51 - 40, so hopefully best case and final of 50 - 41 and BERLIN ours!😜 Round started at 49 - 33 bad guys and well done on their part!

I am pleased to announce that although I did not take Berlin from Artimon, that was only because the Germans surrendered before I could get there.

I started with an offensive on my left and aided by Air Power I took out two panzers as my armor advanced across the river. I lost both of those tanks and an infantry and that front settled down.

Next I attacked on my right and once again got the upper hand-killing a panzer and infantry before losing my flame tank and that front settled in.

I then made a final push in the center and one tank anf a few infantry got me to a nice lead. I lost a 1 fig flame tank in the center to the Luftwaffe. After killing off one infantry, I finished things with Barrage which took out a 1 fig SW AT Inf in the center.

I benefitted from two TFH both of which ordered 6 units and Firefight.

The Germans arty held out till the end game and the left German sniper did good work.

The final score was 12 (48) to 8 (36) and the game took a tad over an hour to complete. I rolled 124 dice (39%) vs 105 (34%).

I had some correct cards all along the game but John kept always some advance (the 2 TFH and Firefight played were lethals...). Well done John ! Cool

Helcat (Allies) 12 medals, 53 figures vs clorofila (Axis) 7 medals, 39 figures.

Helcat - clorofila: Overall hit rate 40% - 34% (133 - 114 rolls)

Congratulations to Helcat, he played the scenario to win and he accomplished that with competence!

I won't miss the 3 cards hand or the Battle of Warsaw style Razz

Hi guys,

First of all, I'm sorry I made you wait this long for the final results. I'm glad to report a second win for the German side. But to be honest, it's mostly due to luck.

Thanks to Van Voort for this special scenario.

Thanks to Eric for the finest scenario's we've played in the previous rounds.

And finally, thanks to all of you for participating in this fantastic tournament. I really enjoyed the new scenario's. Each round we were able to discover some new twists and tricks which were the result of the (re)combination of the different rules from all expansions. Again, hats off to those creative minds!!!

In conclusion: I count myself lucky to have been able to participate in this tournament and I'm looking forward to the next one.

Guys, thanks for all those fun moments, history lessons and very tense battles.

Which means, in my humble opinion, that we have reached the end of this line. So a time to tally up the final scores:

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/30626174/jerfotodiv/endscoreeast.png

The final postcard I chose is not a German one, although we won this war the reality was different. So I chose another dutch artist. And a card that reflects German and Allied propaganda tricks and counter tricks:

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/30626174/jerfotodiv/Hellephellep.jpg

Dutch artist Nico Broekman originally drew this postcard in 1941, a year after Germany’s occupation of the Netherlands. It shows the little ways a graffiti artist could contribute to the war effort. Frustrated by the success of the Allies "V for Victory" campaign, the Nazis adopted it as their own, adding the words "Germany is victorious on all fronts." They posted these signs all over the occupied territories. These well-known German posters were quickly altered by adding a caricature of Hitler raising his arms in a "V" for surrender an the "pages" after "front" and HELP above the capitulating Hitler. German news reports in wartime papers were frequently lies and this clever alteration made unpleasant truth seem similarly dubious.
The post card, for obvious reasons, was not published openly until the Netherlands were free, though they did circulate covertly.
The printed message on the left and bottom of the card reads: "A memory of five distressful years of war, terror and suppression by Nazis May - 1940 May - 1945."

And so the final battle in this 5 1/2 month campaign is done.

Eric, thank you for organizing this tournament and presenting us with so many interesting, creative, and challenging scenarios. I had a blast with all of them. (And Berlin, too, van Voort.)

Thank you -- Artimon, clorofila, Dugrim, Jeronimon, JJs Juggernaut, LooneyLlama, and Vercingetorix1302 -- for being such an outstanding and cohesive team. It was an honor and a privilege to share this journey with every one of you.

Thank you, Helcat, for your consistent sportsmanship and fair play, from the initial choosing of the teams through the final battles. And in addition to Helcat, thank you -- gheintze, Gonzalan, JAParker, Jaykay2010, lucky91, Tank Commander, and van Voort -- for being such worthy opponents.

It is a tribute to the strength of both sides that no player won more than 7 games, and only two did better than 6-4.

Special congratulations to Vercingetorix, who had the best won-lost record in the tournament, at 7-3, with +21 medals (topping me by 3 medals). Special congratulations also to the three 6-4 players: Artimon, clorofila, and van Voort. A special mention to gheintze, who was the only player to win two 2-point games. And another special mention to Jeronimon, who despite his 55- won-lost record, finished +16 on medals.

I hope the Pacific tournament will be as much fun as this was. In fact, I'm sure it will be.

I want to thank everyone for participating in this tournament. You are all not only good players but great sports. I had a lot of fun playing and especially trying to write interesting and fun scenarios. The banter back and forth between the teams was also great fun. My only regret is that it would be a lot more interesting if I was able to incorporate more of the board game rules into the online version. It is very challenging to have 'one hand tied behind my back' when writing for us online. The bugs and limited rules are frustrating. Anyway, I know most of you are playing the Pacific tournament so I will see you there!
