Today ist the last update's anniversary Mon, 14 January 2013 23:30
Maybe some of you have already noticed that today is no ordinary day - exactly one year ago, on 14 January 2012, M44O 1.2.0 was released.

Alas, we have little reason to celebrate - with the exception of the 17 new scenarios (made possible chiefly by the most commendable efforts of Geoff Heintze), nothing new has happened, as far as the online game is concerned (I won't dispute the valuable additions to the board game). Some people have suggested that DoW has reassigned its scarce IT manpower resources to other theaters (like creating various "Ticket to Ride" apps etc.), some even doubted that anything will happen before 6 June 2014.

I sincerely hope that we won't have to wait for such long a period. The least thing that ought to be done is the removal of the various bugs still plagueing both M44O and the M44 editor. And while there are not that much generals yet, the need of activating the next officer rank will probably also become urgent before another 18 months from now.

Of course, any other addition would also be heartly welcomed by the community, I'm convinced. There are several possible improvements that should not be THAT difficult, labor-intensive and time-consuming to implement.

I can only speak for me, but I need a certain challenge to have real fun when playing. The 17 new scenarios already did a lot, but they won't be sufficient to keep my motivation intact until June 2014. Hopefully, we will have something new to celebrate before the next anniversary approaches.

If you feel compelled to use my last name, please note that I have the fine German last name of "Heintzelman" (or Heinzelmann before the English in North America required it to be changed). Very Happy

DoW is a board game company as well as a software game company but it seems that the software division takes a back seat.

In the PC game world most titles are dead after 1 year and so they keep coming out with sequels and updates.

I would like to see the bugs fixed and the ability to use Support weapons like Mortars and Machine Guns.

My apologies, I always thought that your were using your full surname as your DoW pseudonym. Seeing that you are living at a place where some people consider the Civil War to have ended, are you in any way related to famous general Samuel P. Heintzelman?

Although I have ancestors that fought in both the American Revolution and the Civil War (among other wars), we've been unable to find a link to General Samuel Heintzelman. If we are related, the records would be in Germany, as I am descended from Hans George Heinzelmann (who came to America around 1750), and it appears that Samuel P. Heintzelman is descended from John George Heintzelman.

A post in the general & small world forums states the the DoW developers are working hard on a new v2 for small world for iPad.

Good news if you are a small world for iPad player, probably not so good news if you are here waiting for ( at least) a bug fix release for M44 online.

I have bugs that I reported many months ago that have not been acknowledged let alone fixed.

I am a big DoW and M44 fan. M44 Online started with a huge amount of support and we worked hard on reporting bugs which were quickly fixed. The level of support dropped significantly 12 months ago with the last full release.

As I stated elsewhere new scenarios are nice but a full release is overdue.

Please DoW uphold our faith and put some effort into (at least) fixing the current bugs, adding more awards and more ranks, please.

The new update of Small World is good news for M'44 fans. Since the last M'44 update, both TTR and Small World (the other large electronic games by DoW) have received or are receiving big updates. That means that M'44 is next on the list...have faith, my friends.

On this issue Geoff you're a glass half full kind of person I am not.
You're giving DoW the benefit of the doubt I am not.
My expectations aren't being met at present,
No release for 12 months - except for your initiative Geoff - isn't very supportive.

Small World 2 for iPad is now well underway and it will ship later this year; isn't good news for the M44 Online community as it would seem to indicate any new M44 online release would have to be much later this year.

To me it seems to indicate a continued long wait for the M44 Online community. To me that isn't good news, it is sad news.

It seems to me that DoW have more on their plate than they can adequately service with the revenue that the software generates. Unfortunate.

If it would guarantee a more regular (6 monthly) release schedule I'd pay 1 more GI per battle.

I remain a disappointed DoW fan

It actually gets worse. The note I got from DOW encouraged me to donate, via Kickstarter, in order to get more features built into the Small World 2 iPad release. Top pledge level of $8,500 is still available - gets you various collectors items related to Small World. Check it out at:

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/daysofwonder/small-world -2

They also go on to state:

Software risks: While experienced in developing and publishing board and digital video games such as Small World 2, our team is a small and highly specialized one: should anyone on the team fall sick or become unavailable, significant delays would certainly ensue. Furthermore, even if everything goes according to plan, we might receive feedback and suggestions we want to incorporate, which could delay the product beyond its current target ship date of June 2013.

This being said, the iPad version of Small World 2 is already well underway, and we feel confident in our capacity to ship it sometime later this year, no matter what!

These are not good signs; I work for a software company, and when you are squabbling over what features should make it into the next major release you really don't have enough resources.

Full disclosure: I love board games, have really enjoyed M44 (and still do), think DOW makes great games, and just spent my $30 coupon from the Major Pack on...the board game version of Small World. (Stuck it in the closet as the kids, aged 4 and 7, aren't quite up to a game of that complexity).

If I could work for a board game company and still support my family, I would. (Thanks, Dad, for this particular long-running hobby.)

Still and all, DOW is hurting for online programming resources.

Phread, I also would welcome a per-game price increase if that would get faster action. This could even come with an award - "Big Spender" - that we could sign ourselves up for...You can design the ribbon! (Unless Dietrich beats you to it.)

I will repeat myself, but I don't care Razz :
I'm ok with DoW not spending more time and effort in developing M44Online if they have different priorities; but I think they should make that clear to the customers. Also, the bug reporting feature should let everyone know that an answer (and an eventual solution for the bug) is not expected to come up in a reasonable time span.
Anyway, what really bothers me is the sensation that we are left abandoned by DoW, without news, announcements or even an "Hello!" in the Forum. The fact that there are now 2 «ghost» open games at the lobby (Pegasus Bridge and Carentan) is an appalling example of such abandon.

I have to agree that the Small World Kickstarter campaign bodes not well at all for M44 Online

Unless it works well. Then they might use the same system to launch more Memoir Online. I think I would participate in a kickstarter project to launch the air pack, breakthrough and overlord in the online game.

Although I would prefer small releases every 4 months over such a big project in a few years.

Things that should not take too much effort:
- Add machine guns
- add mortar
- Add anti tank gun
- add big gun
- fix different ambush bugs
- add/fix some terrain (swamps, winter road, winter church, railroad, ... )

If they would do one (only one!) of those every 4 months, I would play more often, and therefor spend more gold. And that would be projects for the next 2 years.

Looks like we can add Bastogne Corridor West to that list...

I think fixing the bugs for official scenarios should be the #1 priority.

I agree that adding some features every month or so would be good. Remember though, that each thing isn't just about rules, but they'd have to program Johnny/Hermann to understand it, too.

It would be nice to see an announcement of a new feature every month, like "February: railroad tracks now stop armor and artillery movement in your SFTF", "March: towns and forests on hills now provide elevation for battles against other hills. Try it in SFTF!" and so on.

PS: Marshes are identical to Rice Paddies; use the latter in your scenarios even if you are in Europe.

14 months have passed since Helcat got promoted to the Brigadier General rank AND we still know nothing about the promotion clues for the next step: Major General! So much for DoW promotional text: «[...] Exactly what is required to move beyond Second Lieutenant is still Classified, and has only been discovered by a few, but Intelligence reports are beginning to come in, offering tantalizing hints of what it may take to advance one's career.»

Admittedly, "tantalizing" was a great pick for the above sentence, given the circumstances of the story behind the word genesis...
