Two New Awards Mon, 18 February 2013 16:50
Last night I was playing my BGG match, Battle for Hill 178, against an esteemed opponent. This is the first time I've played this one. In the first round, he as the Axis, attempted to move all of his units to his left flank. It ws very sound strategy as he wanted to protect his infantry with 2 artillery units. I pondered moving all my units to my left flank but, if I wanted to go to work this week, take vacation this summer, and see the leaves change in the fall, I decided against it. This would have placed all of our units out of range of each other. I would have won if I waited long enough for Recon 1 cards to destroy his artillery and then attack. I opted for a conventional approach and won 7-3.

Therefore, I propose a new award, the SOMNAMBULENT AWARD, given for any game that goes over 100 turns. It will be a black ribbon with 3 or 4 'z's in the center.

In the rematch, he used a Recon 1 card to wipe out my center artillery unit. I was immedialely neutered on my right and center flanks. He followed it up with a Barrage card on my other artillery unit but was only able to kill off one figure. He then slowly moved his artillery and armor units forward, which again was very sound strategy, if not quite boring as he was assured of victory. I had nothing to do but watch. At the end, I think he was bored himself, and got a little aggressive with his armor which gave me a chance to throw 8 dice at 2 of them. 1 hit. All in all, I threw a total of 17 dice(8 on that one turn) with only 3 figures killed. He threw 63. Final score of 7-0.

Therefore, I propose the COMPLETE ANNIHILATION AWARD for any player that prevents his opponent from throwing ANY dice(or removing ANY figure for those of you who want to be less challenged). It will be another black ribbon with a mushroom cloud in the center.

I think this scenario would get a lot of play for you award junkies if these 2 new awards were available. They sure are possible.

Those sound like interesting awards and 'unusual' battles. Very Happy

These award suggestions might fit better over in the Memoir '44 Online forums rather than here, though. Just a thought. Smile

Ras, I'm sorry to say that this thread is all tongue in cheek. Though what I stated did occur, I made up the awards to show everyone how bad this scenario really is. I can not believe that this scenario was vetted at all.

Yes. Try playing as the Germans with bad cards and worse luck. I lost 0 to 7.

Sort of reminds me of Red Barricades in a way. Once I played as the Russians and was neatly picked apart by Recon Air strikes and many arty shots. Not much I could do other than sit there and be slaughtered or advance and be sluaghtered.

Scenarios like that sure could use a once through the deck time limit for the attackers.

JJAZ,

I don't care how lucky you were. To win that scenario as Axis is downright amazing. I might have to try that banzai strategy if I ever play that scenario again.

Geoff,

That was well played. I especially liked your using Artillery Bombard to move up 2 hexes, though it did line up those 3 units to get hit by air power. I have to say though, that your opponent made way too many piecemeal attacks and did not move up his artillery. It left you plenty of opportunities to eliminate his units, especially his armor. It does show though that you can win this scenario with the Allies. I never thought it possible.

Yes, he did make some mistakes -- especially being overaggressive with the armor...but I was still surprised to win without being all out aggressive.
