2013 World Boardgaming Championships -- Memoir '44 tournament -- August 1-2 Sat, 20 April 2013 08:09
The WBC Memoir '44 tournament will be held Thursday-Friday, August 1-2, in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, USA.

> Thursday evening: Demo and Mulligan round.
> Friday: 6-rounds, 2-game matches, single-elimination. Tournament begins at 9am and continues into the evening.

Last year's tournament had 69 players, including over 20 who play Memoir Online or post on the Forums here.

This year's tournament will feature scenarios specially chosen by the person who has played more games of Memoir Online (and very possibly more total games of Memoir) than anybody else in the world -- more than 6,200 as of this writing -- Nygaard, from Denmark.

I asked Nygaard to choose a set of scenarios that would make a great tournament for WBC: Public scenarios, so players can see them in advance. For the first several rounds, scenarios that can be played from the original, basic set - so players don't need to bring any expansions. Interesting and balanced, with a variety of strategic options. A strong opening hand shouldn't guarantee a win, and a weak opening hand shouldn't guarantee a loss.

Also, he decided to include several scenarios from the base game. I hope this will encourage casual players to play. Since this will be WBC's 10th annual Memoir tournament, I'd love to see how many players we can have this year. Any chance we could hit 100? Smile

Click the "tournament details" link, below, to read the full Event Preview.

> Mulligan: Operation Cobra
> 1st Round: St. Vith
> 2nd Round: Foret d'Ecouves (official scenario by jdrommel)
> 3rd Round: Montelimar
> 4th Round: Saverne Gap
> 5th Round: Invasion of Amoy (one of Nygaard's own scenarios - Pacific)
> Finals: Ponyri (from Eastern Front, but no Commissar)

> Tournament details have been posted at: http://www.boardgamers.org/yearbkex/m44pge.htm

> WBC home page, with links to all other details: http://www.boardgamers.org/

> You can post questions here, or PM me, or email SamM44@optonline.net .

In addition, we'll have several 8-player Overlord games:

> Thursday 2pm - Tigers in the Snow
> Saturday 10am - Stalingrad: Perdition (by LooneyLlama)
> Saturday 2pm - Twin Battles of Warnach & Bigonville (from Equipment Pack)
> Plus, the notorious "Midnight Madness" Overlord Friday at 11pm - The double-size desert "Overthrough" scenario they gave out at the French Open.

I was about to post on this, but I am glad to see Sam got the official announcement out.

That's a good selection of scenarios and for anyone thinking of coming I would strongly recommend giving WBC a try.

And if you come on Wednesday, you can come play Napoleonic Wars with me

I might be there again this year with my son, but the Cherry Crest Farm corn maze will, as usual, get priority. That's the primary target of our annual pilgrimage to Lancaster though I've been trying to work in WBC the past couple of years.

We'll see, as my son also wants to go to GenCon (later in the month) and my wife and daughter have little interest in Memoir '44. My daughter did some of the under-12 game tournaments last year, but honestly, she doesn't like the venue (I think she made the mistake of eating breakfast there one day). The rest of us don't care as we stay in a different hotel closer to Lancaster anyway.

Cherry Crest Farm is on our list of things to do as well. We'll be there on Wednesday before the M'44 tournament starts.

Somebody asked me about registration a week or two ago. I see that pre-registration is now open. http://www.boardgamers.org/wbc/prereg.htm

(For individual tournaments, there is no advance registration. Just walk into the room a few minutes before the scheduled start time.)

UPDATE: New scenario for the Friday "Midnight Madness" multi-player game.

A few weeks ago, there was a discussion here about the "Overthrough" (Overlord Breakthrough) desert scenario that was given away at this spring's French Open.

THAT's what we're going to play Friday night.

YUM!!! Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

would be great to try an overthrough some day. Some player can call themselves lucky to try an official one in a few weeks.

Count me in for that one. Is there a table big enough to hold that large of a board?

From the Open de France thread in this Forum:
jdrommel wrote on Mon, 17 June 2013 17:43

Hello Almilcar,

Sorry but not from my part, now.
You know that this overthrough was a gift for players of the Open de France 2013 by the FFM44.
It's a common decision of people of the FFM44 board to let them the priority to play this scenario at the moment.
Later, this scenario will be available to everybody, you can be sure, but not at present.

I hope you understand this decision. Confused

Yours,
Jdrommel.

Sam,

I really could associate with those on the video. Being a 'closet' board game Geek and a military miniature painting Geek to boot is tough. When I tell people where I am going next week, or when I've gone to military figure shows, I do get strange looks. I can say that I am really looking forward to next week's event. Not because of the tournament, but to play MEM44 with fellow enthusiasts.

Nice video Sam.

To get it back to the WBC: that's a place where you can be yourself when talking about "geekstuff" and be understood. It's always a relief tot talk to people who share your passion and interests.

One extra remark: I also find that when I am with people who do not share my passion, but have a passion of their own, it's much easier to relate to each other and respect the others hobby/passion/obsession. Smile

To parafrase the english Bard:

“If gaming be the food of fun, play on,
Give me excess of it; that surfeiting,
The appetite may sicken, and so die.”

Great day today - I met so many online players, including gonzoj, tank commander, van Voort, sam1812, richardbliss, LooneyLlama and others that I'm forgetting.

At 2PM, we played an Overlord game of Tigers in the Snow. I was on the Russian left with my son in the middle. It was a great match that the Allies won by taking the town and killing two Tigers in one turn.

We had some time afterward so six of us played Operation Market Garden. The Allies had tremendous cards and the Axis couldn't get on a roll in a 13-4 game.

After the 2nd overlord game, we ran into Richard Borg -- this was the highlight of Daniel's and my day. I hope that we get to interact with him more throughout the weekend.

My son did a great job teaching new players at the demo at 8PM. I believe we taught the game to 5-6 new or returning playes, but I'm not sure. Thank to van Voort for helping out with this as well.

I got to take a peak at the Overthrough map and I'm looking forward to playing it tomorrow.

Finally, the mulligan round took place late in the evening. I was lucky enough to win 9-8 -- the dice and cards were a challenge, but I'm glad to pull through to the 2nd round to play Foret d'Ecouves. My son was not so lucky with Operation Cobra and will try to advance at St. Vith first thing in the morning.

I'll try to report on tomorrow, but I'm hoping that it will be a long day for me. Smile Thanks to Sam1812 for running all this - he's doing a phenomenal job.

Geoff,

Thanks for the great report on Day 1 of WBC as far as M44 goes, my twin green monsters of Envy and Jealousy continue to grow with each update!😃

Glad you got to meet so many online players and no doubt each looked exactly how you pictured, tends to be that way, WINNERS all have a certain look!

Sounds like a great time for you and your son and getting to meet Mr. Borg just adds to the experience, time to feed my green monsters!

Good luck to you, your son and the rest of the combatants this fine day, kick off in 10 short minutes for some, EST! Here in the mountains of Colorado, sun just come up and Water World in Denver for my family and I, a poor mans WBC! 😫
