Eric,

By the way, in the centre sections, you might want to replace the hills by hills with caves. Since there are no Japanese units, they have the desired effect: only difference with regular hills is that they are impassible for armour and artillery.

Wim,

Thanks for the directions. I have it saved on vassal but I initially saved it as 'solitaire'. Is there a way to resave it as 'observer' or do I have to start over and rewrite it as observer? Thanks.

Tony, don't worry about it. It's a long standing tradition in the military to blame the guy upstairs. In this case you! Cool

As stated above, keep working at it. I personally would rather stay a FG for upcoming games and would gladly serve under you another time.

I salute you. Razz

IGH
We startedthe actual battle at about 15:55h and finished at about 18:05h. (Central European Time)
But there were a lot of technical problems at the beginning. (We were supposed to start at 15:00h) after the game there was a short conversation an analysis.

Jeronimon,

Thanks for that, you have no idea, have spent many a restless and sleepless night since that ill-fated day and battle and thanks to you, last night was the 1st night since that I was able to sleep, I actually got a wink in!! Laughing

No worries indeed, there is only one for each side, winner and non-winner (a little less than the actually winner) and I know it came down to luck, it's not like Sam, John S., Eric and JFKoski have any skill, right?

Until the next time, CinC, FG or perhaps relegated to the role of "observer'! Laughing

Gonzalan,
You didn't do necessarily bad as CinC … we did not have the card in hand to evaluate that correctly.
And as for returning to combat instead of following up as CinC: you can only get good at CinC by playing as one. So keep trying … that's how you learn best.

Q2,

Ah, you forgot I mentioned my "decoder" ring and add to the fact that I read on occasion and have developed a skill, perhaps my only one, of reading between the lines!!

In the above statement, you say "necessarily bad" key word here being "bad", hence I did "bad", just not 'that bad"!! Laughing

Just couldn't resist a little good-natured ribbing on my part. For my part, will try to go in the opposite direction and go "good, better, best' and not go "bad, worse, worst' or is it "bad, badder, baddest"?

Or perhaps I can be "the BADDEST man in the whole darn place" much like Bad, Bad, Leroy Brown was!!! Thanks for that JC!!

Eric

You can try to open it, press the switch side button, join as observer, and save again.
Then if you open it again later, he should ask you what side you want to join in.
If he doesn't ask that, the trick doesn't work and you have to start over Wink

"Not necessarily bad" is not the same as "a little bad"
With not necessarily bad, I mean that I cannot judge if you did bad or not.
I don't know which cards you were holding, or what you said to our other two field generals.
I can only judge what I saw.
What I saw was that you didn't play the cards that could have made a difference, and you didn't communicate on a coherent strategy.
So either you had mediocre cards, and no clear strategy to be drawn from the cards (that's not bad play, just bad luck) or you had the cards but played them badly.

So could be good play but bad luck, or could be bad play. That was what I meant by "not necessarily bad".

In any case, what is more important, is that I had great fun. And I'd join you in battle any day.

How long did this last game take to finish?

IGH,

Thought JFKoski had mentioned the time in his initial report, but appears not, I think he did mention it somewhere along the way and think it was 2 hrs 42 mins in length.

Thanks. And another question: do you play the rules as they are in the Operation Overlord 6 page manual?

As far as I know, we strictly adhere to official rules in every game we play.

Cheers

Wim,

Your suggestion worked. I can now set my games as observer, Allied commander or Axis commander. Can't wait until next overlord game. Thanks.

The Operation Overlord 6-page manual came first. The Operation Overlord expansion came afterward, and those are the official rules now. It mostly codified what was in the 6-page manual, but there are a few changes.

Both the 6-page manual and the Overlord expansion manual are incomplete in some respects. The former skips from Action 3- Initiative Roll to Action 4-Draw cards. This leaves out the precise sequence of ordering units, moving, battling, etc.

I've put together an Overlord Sequence Summary to incorporate all the possible rules one could have in an overlord game (Commissar, Marines, Air Rules, Combat Cards) and in the proper sequence you should play them, according to official forum answers, M'44 Online for some situations, and various FAQs we had. (The latest version is still not worded clearly for Commissar.) You can find it by following the above link to boardgamegeek, or download the Word file in my User Pages.

I did make 1 exception to the manual. If you have 3 on a side, it says to have the CiC also play as the Center Field General. We've done that in the past but in a 3 vs 4 situation, the CFG on the 3-person side has an enormous advantage in knowing what cards are in the CiC hand while the opposing CFG does not! This didn't matter because we got the full 8 players before the Allies' first turn was complete.

The last time we played 2-on-2 or 2-on-1, we played co-op (rule is in Overlord Pack). Both players on a side knew the CiC cards and could command any of their side's units. But it still was more convenient to let one player act as CiC and 1 FG and the other for the other FGs.

Q2,

Yep, for me, win or not win, object is to have fun!!! And for me that usually involves reading the witty banter of my team and the enemy, though the enemy isn't as funny as they think they are!! Laughing

Yep, not the best outcome and a learning experience and will have no issue trying again, after all, only 2 possible outcomes during a game and just because the team isn't or doesn't win, doesn't mean fun can't be had!!

Thanks for setting the game up and hope I am there for the next one!!

Hi guys,

If you want to get a head start on next month's scenario, it is on the SFTF page. It is Crossing the Volturno Line. If anyone knows how to host a game that is in your own library let me know. I can play it with any of you guys or we can play it with more players. It's so darn cold out that I've been staying in on weekends. I've never hosted a game before so I don't know how to do it. Any help would be appreciated.

Eric

Eric, do you have the file for Vassal done?

Jaime,

Yes, file is on vassal and I know how to host a game. If you have time I could play as two player game. I also have two other overlords on vassal that play out real well, Push to the Roer and Battle of Bloody Gulch. Reinforcements, majority medal objectives and a new German unit, the assault gun, make these overlords a lot of fun for both sides. All Field Generals will get into the action and the overall commander will have some very tough decisions to make. I think these are as good as my Stalingrad, Perdition overlord.
