New themes for the SoC system Fri, 17 June 2005 16:00
Firstly, congratulations on a fantastic game.

I've already started reading about likely expansions in terms of new quests and new black/white cards, but I wonder if anyone has thought of transporting the SoC system to a new theme? My thoughts immediately turned to:

1. X-Men: a team of superheroes with the inevitable "superhero gone bad" possibility. Could tie-in with the next movie in X-men series perhaps.

2. "The Thing": A board game version of the classic John Carpenter movie (and other versions). Seven scientists at an antarctic research station trying to stop "The Thing", but of course, one of the scientists may already be "The Thing". One of the best movies about creeping paranoia, ideal for the SoC treatment!

Any comments/ideas?

If you keep the same system, no one already owning SoC would buy the new game, as it would be simply the same game with different theme (those preferring the new theme would probably sell SoC to get the "new version"... the few keeping both are probably colllectors, so they'd buy the game in any case Razz ).

If you simply keep the "traitor rule", then it could be a fine game or not; but overall not more related to SoC than any area-majority game is related to El Grande or any abstract game is related to Mancala, etc.

Have fun! Smile

Luke,

I disagree with your idea that the same underlying rules engine will not work in another genre or sales from takes from another exclusively. Take for example Battle Cry and Memoir 44. Both use the underlying Command and Colors system Richard Borg developed. Both are great games in their respective time periods and I did not sell one to get another. Same with Risk variants, I have both Risk 2210 and Risk LOTR: Triology edition. Each has a basic "Risk" engine, but both are very unique and exciting games in their respective genres.

I like the ideas posted, especially the "Thing" idea or something like it. I can see a murder mystery setting too, perhaps even a Clue variant, refreshing that very venerable franchise.

TTFN,

John

Well, while I like cooperative games (and so far we haven't many of them... not many "good ones" at least Wink ), I'd much prefer a DIFFERENT system than a simple "new them for old rules" (as in the case of Mem44 and BC). Obviously, if the new version was significantly different (even if "related" to SoC), I'd look at it closely. How much different is "significantly different" depends by each of us (maybe I need more variety than you).
Whatever you'll play, have fun! Smile

Two things to add (just my 2 cents Smile ) Firstly the game itself would not have to be exactly the same, using rolld6's analogy of M44 and Battlecry, while it's obvious that they are the same basic system, M44 doesn' make use of commanders (which Battlecry does) and Memoir 44 has rules for things that don't exist in battlecry (new terrain, and of course special forces and french resistance, not to mention the use of multiple maps for beach landings)

I like the supehero idea (but since DoW doesn't really have a bunch of licences and licences just add to the overall game cost, why not just make up thier own heroes, or even have a "character creation feature" where you can create a character by giving them special abilities, and then just do a selection of different minis ala SoC. and make the "round table" a doomsday clock with a moving of the clock one way for doom and reversing it to buy the citizens of the city one more hour.

Here is another theme I think would be cool -

Shadows over London- Victorian england in a fantastic setting as the great Sherlock holmes, and other heroes of the era (using baker street as a base) defend the world against Dr Moriarty, Jack the Ripper, Mr. Hyde, and even the Martians.

Several of has have commented on BBG.com that this engine would be perfect for a Star Wars themed game. Shadows over Courscant....Lightsabers instead of swords, Darth Maul instead of the Black Knight, Droid Army instead of Picts, it would be a easy translation, IMO...

The list is infinit, every potentially collaborative group can be the main theme for the game:

1. Predator fighting agains aliens (The traitor is the alien-inside), wich quests like getting his arms, the siege engines are adult aliens, most of the cards are equipments and abilities

2. Shelock Holmes against Moriarty and other victorian foes.

3. Victorian heroes will be amazing (just remember that film with the invisible man, Tom Sawyer, Captain Nemo...). You can include others like Alester Crowley.

4. Still in the Victorian mood, an adventure against Jack The Ripper (maybe one of the detectives...). The quests became clues...

And for Kids, Harry Potter! The Grail becames Quiditch, Lancelot / Dragon became Troll / Basilisk, the knigths became Harries friends, Merlin (Dumbledore), other whites wiht Hagrid, Sirius Black... ant the evil cards Morgan (Malfoi, the father), Draco, Snape...

24. Full stop.

Don't change a single rule, just license the 24 TV show, re-skin Shadows over Camelot, and enjoy.

WHOM DOST THOU WORK FOR!?
