My biggest wish is for more destination tickets. It doesn't take long to figure out the most probable route an opponent is trying to fill.

Fully Agree Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

Yet this looks like an extension to the game, so Mr Alan Moon may have his word to say...Nevertheless, I'm like you, a bit worried about too much readability of the current ticket set.

I just found that the online store here offers a complete set of replacement cards for the game for only $5. I ordered a set and I'm going to magic marker some tickets to state my new routes, add them in, and try it out. We'll see if it makes the game more exciting or more tedious.

Beep when player joins Tue, 06 September 2005 22:09
Hi, I would like a beep (or toot) when a player joins a game. Sometimes I check my email while waiting or get distracted by my boys.

I could see a peference page, maybe you could indicate if you block and the folks that dont like it could go play someone else.

Thanks, Art.

Hi

Cool, this thread is now sticky on top what means that DOW is looking over the wishlist Very Happy

Just a reminder: I created a survey for most of the proposed features in this wishlist on

My first wish:

To select in my history all the game vs a individual player.
(this could be helpful for multi thousend games player like me).

This will help me to find the players I need to play with to improve my tactics.

For trash talking, it could help a lot too.

Good initiative. Thank you for these discussions, Erps.

Re:Proposals for ticket to ride wishlist Thu, 29 September 2005 22:44
I second what toutonne said... It would be great to see you history against a particular person. I see this as being accomplished 1 or three ways:

1) set up filters on your game history, this would let you see games again a player, or perhaps a group of players (say if the captains for NC wanted to see all the games their players have against their opponents.

2) make the lists sortable by the opponent field (not a great solution, but I would think easy to implement)

3) make the history exportable (then we can put in in excel and finagle it to our heart's content)

A couple other things I think are tops on the idea list:

1) adding a win-loss record, preferably with the option of breaking it down by # of players, map (if the historical data is there in the background) and maybe even top xxx players

2) show which map a game was played on (I do NOT advocate separate ratings necessarily, but it would be nice to know)

3) adding the option when you open a game to have a minimum and/or maximum rating, as well as the ability to exclude guests (I would like to see it be like pogo does, where you have check boxes for different rating ranges, easy to use and flexible)

I'm glad to see this stickied, makes me think y'all at DoW are thinking about some of this stuff Wink

Don't worry about this, toutoune ! I only played once against bassie (a month ago), and it was... a victory !!... not bad, against a so high ranked player ! Rolling Eyes Very Happy ... but I have to admit that we didn't talk when we played.

Well, a bit of trash talking before round 6 ins't a bad idea, no ?!... I like that Laughing Laughing Laughing

Dear Elric, trash talk is nice, but I don't want to deny your team 3 players in top-20. Poor toutoune ran into me again last night, and it took him some games to recover Twisted Evil and find a spot among the top-20 again. Congrats, by the way! You are the 3rd team to have 3 players on the first page.

Please tell toutoune to move carefully in the lobby, he might be tempted to offer me some more points... Laughing Laughing Laughing

Hi

You know i love trash talking. But please stop it in this thread. It's meant for wishes and proposals and DOW is looking over it. It's hard to find the good ones is piece of garbage Very Happy

Next points:

Watching games: Change it, that the player, who creates the game, is watched, if he likes. Optional: Don't show the ticks and cards of the watched player.

Sound in the lobby: Change the "ring me"-sound in the lobby. Now it's the same sound as the sound for a player joining the lobby.
Maybe it's possible to ring a sound if your nick is mentioned in the lobby, too?

I like the idea of changing the way games can be watched.
erps' idea - creator can be watched - is good.
If that is possible without too much effort more could be done:
You can select, whom you want to watch (maybe I prefer to watch a friend to watching the top ranked player).
Each player can select for himself, whether he wants to allow watching in the following categories:
*) Open to everyone
*) Only people on my buddy list
*) No guests
*) Nobody
A display, who is currently watching, might also be nice.
I think this would also solve all problems with open vs. closed games in the nations cup - or would anyone care if the opponent has kibitzers?

just ideas - no priority

Reposting this from another thread because it really fits best here:

erps wrote on Tue, 25 October 2005 04:45

There are some serious problems with guests:

1. They could be used "cheap" for cheating and spying on other players during open matches. Like thekid once said, if cheaters and double accounters buy there accounts, this sounds fair.

I think what is being said is not necessarily that this is fair, but at least they have to pay a price for their chicanery. Cheaters are one thing, double accounters are another. I don't agree with either, but cheaters should certainly have their accounts banned or reduced to 1400.

Quote:

2. You don't know their playing skill. Some guests are better than the most ordinary players. Why not showing their points, too? (You can see the points in yet not started 3+ matches, btw, really silly).

IMO, guests should have no history. Keep reading:

Quote:

3. A guest is not polite and DOW deactivates the account? No problem and no loss of money for him. Find a new mail-adress and come back as ugly as before.

Right, which is why some sort of 'separation' should be instituted. I do think allowing anyone to try the game is a good thing, but the degree to which they affect the legitimate ranking should be minimized, IMO. Once a guest has played enough to learn to like the game, once they are 'hooked', they will want to see how they stack up against ranked players, see their history (if this is denied), and actually be ranked.

Quote:

My proposal was limiting the guests to karma 4. There is another, imho much better proposal in my wishlist. LIMITING guests to play only NON RANKED games (they have NO rank, why let them play the ranking games?). BUT: Let them allow to start these games! Every registered player who wants to play guests can start a non ranked game or join these games.

I hope you see the logic behind:
ranked player - ranked game
non ranked player - non ranked game

i think it fits Smile

Brilliant. Absolutely brilliant! I hadn't thought of this, but it's PERFECT. It wasn't possible before because there was no non-ranked games, but if you let guests play non-ranked, even START non-ranked, their impact on the regular community will be negligible and they will still get to play to their heart's content. However, with this privilege of starting games, a privilege should be taken away. Since these are non-ranked games these games should not appear in the history. Thus, a guest would have no history, and non-ranked games would not distort the history of the ranked players either.

I think this is a solution that would solve the problem for all, and still allow guests to enjoy the game while giving them an incentive to pay to play, which is the overall goal.

Thanks, erps, for this great solution.

In sum:

1.) Only NON-RANKED games for guests, but guests can start NON-RANKED games.

2.) NON-RANKED games should NOT show on history.

What do you think DoW??

Best,
SKM

I disagree, I just like playing when I have time to play, when you start putting restrictions on things it makes it harder for people to meet up and play.

Of course I dont care about my rating and I am hooked, I play several games a day while exercising. I think fewer people would keep comming back if you make it to hard for them to find players. You were new once, just play and have fun. Its not like you make money at this or anything.

good luck.

Some other wishes from me:

Dear mr T2R

(1) If I whisper sweetly to someone, and I mistyped or that person had just left or had just started a game, then I always feel a little embarassed to notice that I just screamed it into the lobby. Is it possible to avoid that (Check the person does exist or is not in lobby) ?

(2) Is it possible that one can perform a select (on name) in his History. That way it is easily to see what score one has against this selected person. This should not be a too difficult task.

(3) More technical (I already asked my Dutch team mates): If I have 4 jokers and also 4 cards of a color, then I can either choose to lay down 4 of this color OR 4 jokers in a route of 4 wagons. Isn't it possible to let me (for tactical reasons) choose instead ? For example 2 Jokers and 2 Colors. In the boardgame this is possible. Why not in the Internet version ?

Thank you.

Practically, playing the color wagons in a much better choice of course, since the wildcards leave you more flexibility.

Tactically... can you explain how playing a couple of wildcards instead of the color cards would be interesting? It doesn't seem to me like the bluff would ever be worth the practical cost.

I'm sorry this might pollute the thread. Feel free to start a new thread about this topic, I'll find it.

There is a whole depth of strategy having to do with knowing an opponent is out of a certain color. When he/she plays a wild with a color, that allows you to be absolutely certain he/she is out of that color. This will affect what routes you place priority on as you finish yours as well as what blocks you make if you block.

I'm not sure I agree with that proposal, however. It would leave a lot of the game up to guessing, and I like the certainty sometimes, as there is in chess. (Obviously this isn't chess, but the analogy is about 'knowing' a certain move will result in a certain result, which is nice.)

But this seems to be the only difference between the online game and the REAL game. I certainly appreciate the certainty of knowing when someone's out of a color, but I also would like to have to count cards more.

If we're halfway through the deck and I'm holding six blues and my opponent just claimed a grey four with three blues and a locomotive, I'll be disinclined to worry about him taking the five or six blue, especially if I can remember way back to when one of the gray twos were taken with a pair of blues.

The times when it would be tactically useful might not occur with great frequency or be very apparent, but using it could prove to be a great strategy.

Hello,

I want to have an SQL-Interface to the database
with the following features:
1. Documentation of the tables with the matches and
Player.
2. Only a reading access -> Views for Select-Statements.
3. No!!!! need of personal data. Only the nick-name is necessary.

Background:
I want to have an overview of statistic data such as:
How often has two player played against each other.
How many games has someone won / lost.
How are statistic data in a certain periode.
...

Thank you.

Hello DOW team,

the option observing a game can everyone use to look in the card from the people who has open the game.

With the IE browser join to a game and play.
With the opera browser and a second account observing the game.

the people who observing the game do not need to see the cards.
or a sign on the map when someone observing the game.

This is such a no-brainer and has been asked for so many times and in so many ways by so many people that frankly I have no idea why this has not been implemented long ago.

Maybe there is a reason DoW hasn't given us yet, but it would seem like a simple solution and isn't controversial at all. In fact, I would wager that the vast vast majority of the community would be in favor of this.

In one fell swoop it would virtually eliminate cheating, at least by that method. And other than that and boosting ratings by playing oneself over and over, I think that's about all the cheating that can take place other than hacking.

DoW, you guys are awesome and we appreciate all you do, but what gives on this simple solution??

Best,

Make it possible to set a timelimit for the whole game. Maybe to choice between 4,5,10 or 15 Minutes and _open end_.

Maybe add "the 0 minutes game". For those in a rush. As soon as the game is started the computer uses a super dumb bumbot for both players in a flurry of card picking, track laying, route grabbing frenzy. Winner determined in about 10 seconds. Fun to watch and FAST!!!

Alternate concept:

"The six train one route game": where each player gets only six trains, 4 colored cards and picks one to three route cards (don't take 3... just don't). Everything else remains the same. ie: one last turn after a player is down to 2 trains or less. Although slightly longer then the first selection, it does require slightly more strategy.

Gotta run,

Ranking range Thu, 01 December 2005 00:49
I would really like the ability to select a checkbox to only allow players that were up to 100 ranks lower to count towards my ranking if I win/lose.

That way I can safely open a new game and not worry about losing 20 points because some beginner got lucky. This would not prevent me from a rank change when playing anyone better then me.

Ex: Say I'm ranked 500.

Ex1: I click the checkbox and play someone with rank 1000. I don't move up or down ranking on outcome.

Ex2: I click the checkbox and play someone who is ranked 550. I move up or down ranking based on outcome.

Ex3: I click the checkbox and play someone who is ranked 22. I move up or down only if that player has NOT checked off the same box in their setup.

Ex4: I don't check the checkbox: I move up/down on win/lose as always.

Jeff A.

Route information Thu, 01 December 2005 01:00
I would like it if the map contained a connection line between every possible route. ie: a colored line joining all the pairs of cities shown on the route cards. I admit that most 'good' players have them memorized, but I'm always irritated when someone who owns the game sits there and shuffles through cards looking to see which routes they might be able to still get by taking more cards at the end of the game. Or tries to figure out what routes I have. Why not just show them the possibilities on the map?

Also, a running total of longest train line for each player might be nice on the display somewhere.

Starting Player Wed, 07 December 2005 21:00
Hi

New proposals:

I suggest a possibility to SET the starting player of a game. Starting a game is a BIG advantage in every variant of the game. In Cup games it is often desired to change the starting player after every game. Let's say in a best of 5 NC game in the first match is the starting player choosen randomly and after this every match the starting player changes (so still one element of luck, the first starting player will be starting the last game also, but not all 5 or 4).

So i hear some player asking: OK, now everybody is starting a game with the CHECK BOX for Starting ON. NOP. There IS a Check Box, but it is only possible to check it FOR NOT STARTING THE GAME. Thus, the creator of the game has no chance for surely starting the match. For the ordinary day-to-day-game this box is not checked. Only in arranged games it is up to the players to negotiate who is starting the game (and checking the box).

bye, erps

I am speaking as someone who just started with this addictive game -- I think I've played all of nine so far. I've ordered the boardgame version and will set myself up as a "real" participant when it arrives; in the meantime I'm playing as a guest.

1) I really like the idea of being able to declare each game as either "ranked" or "not ranked/free." Only real members could play ranked games; but anyone could play a non-ranked game.

2) However, even guests want to know their history. As I'm building up my interest in the game and my skill, and starting to notice things about the strategy, it would help me to be able to see the same kind of statistical history about my games as everyone else wants to see -- even if only pertaining to the non-ranked games that I've been allowed to play.

3) When I convert myself to a real player, I'd like to be able to bring all my guest history with me and to continue using my same username. I've been working on building my karma up as I play these early games through to completion, and I'm annoyed that when I finally become a real participant, I'll have to start over. [I lost some karma when I was playing on my other computer that was having a freezing problem; I'm sticking with the reliable computer now!]

4) As a new player, I certainly don't want to step into someone's serious rank-important or tournament game. At this point, I just want to learn and have fun. Is there a way to tell which games I should or should not venture into?

5) And on that subject ... who organizes the teams and tournaments? Not that I'm at all prepared to participate, just curious. Razz

Good to see you, JulietB. I was in your first two games and enjoyed them; hope to bump into you again soon.

I started my own thread and had some vaguely similar but more long-winded musings there, including a few things for the wishlist. I'll take this excuse to link to it here rather than repeat myself.

As to your concerns about game history, I think you'll be fine, so long as you make sure you are logged in to your existing account when you enter in the Web Card number. It says the following elsewhere on the DoW web site, under "Upgrading Your Web Card":

Quote:

Note: it is better to upgrade an existing Guest account rather than creating a new account, because you keep your games history. Your rankings are preserved and (at last) revealed. If you create a new account, you will restart from scratch.

So if I read it correctly, you will not only keep your existing history, but you will get your ranking--which the system has been quietly calculating for you all along, in all games where the unranked box was not checked.

And as for your game history in the meantime, are you not able to view the Game History screen as a Guest? If you haven't yet, try clicking on My Account and then Scores & Ranks; or look yourself up using the Find Other Players feature and then click the History link. If these don't work, I'd be happy to PM you the history list I can see for you (so long as the DoW folks don't mind); just message me to let me know.

Cheers, and happy TTRing,

-- Kevin

There are more than 160 games on these days. 90% of them are games against bots!
WHO wants to observe them?!?!?!?!?!?!?
Is there any way to replace those games with "only human" games? Question

My requests, in priority order:

  1. have game histories say whether the game was rated or unrated and what map they played, in addition to the current who scored what. This would help the multiplayer ranking a lot.
  2. When playing, tell me how many cards I have in my hand, not just "8+". I spend a lot of time just counting my cards, you can't beat the best players if you draw more cards than you need.
  3. Some way of filtering active games, a la St Jimmy's suggestion. I'd rather not see bots or closed games, don't know whether it makes more sense to filter them out or just put them at the bottom of the sort order

Thanks!

I think it would be a nice addition if completed tickets displayed a green checkmark, rather than just the red/green counts displayed.

Regarding chat, I could use one of two features. Either:

a) Ability to send private chat messages (i.e. directed at one person only)

b) Better documentation of already-existing feature (a), if it does in fact already exist.

You can whisper to a single person in the chat already. Just type "/[name of person whom you want to receive the message] [message]", without the quotes and brackets, of course.

display of games in the lobby Sat, 28 January 2006 21:02
Please, DOW, change the way open games are displayed in the lobby so that all attributes (open/closed, ranked/nonranked, private) of the games can be seen.
At the moment, if a game is closed and private you cannot see whether it is ranked or unranked, because the right column in the display is too small.
We just played TAG team and agreed - as most players do - to play unranked. Unfortunately the player opening the game forgot to click on 'unranked'. We only realized this after the game - wondering what had happened to the ELO Sad
As a quick fix just changing the order of the attributes according to importance (private-closed-unranked from left to right) may do.

thx

I would like to see in my score/ranking list game history, the number of ranking points earned or lost in each game played. I am relatively new, and read through the rankings/karma posts, but I still find it frustrating to figure out how each game is impacting my rank.

Also, I would like it if the ranking system split scores between 2/3 player games and 4/5 player games. Is it not true that players who focus on 2/3 player games have higher scoring potential and can uprank faster? However, 4/5 player games are more difficult as there is less predictability and more risk in attempting to make larger numbers of routes... it seems to me winning a 5 player game is more difficult than a 2 player game (assuming relatively equal ranks) - should scoring not reflect this?

If I could see the ranking change that occurred with each game played, at least I could better understand the impact each game has had on my score.
