Units in the Call to Arms art Mon, 19 February 2007 18:21
With a quick look at the CtA art, I noticed some interesting units. I'm guessing this is what we're going to see in the specialist packs shortly:

Goblins
Goblin pikemen
Goblins with slingshots (slingshotters? I don't know what to call them! Smile )
Goblin drummers

Dwarves
Dwarf pikemen
Dwarf axemen
Dwarf bagpipers

Humans
Human pikemen
Human axemen (they might be halbards... not sure)
Human lancers (not sure of the correct term here either. The guy on the horse with a lance Smile )

Then there are a few extras that I can't guess where they go:
A troll(?) with what looks to me like a giant meat cleaver. Smile
A catapult(?) (half covered by the 'A' in 'Arms')
And my favorite: Goblin(?) archers mounted on ostriches! (If they are goblins, they may come with the goblin pack, I guess. )
EDIT: Looking at the ostrich riders again, it looks like they might be carrying a bow AND an open book?)

Anyone see anything else?

EDIT 2: Apparently I'm a few days late for this thread. The same discussion started Friday on BGG. Check here: http://www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/152115

Painting guide - pdf? Fri, 23 February 2007 02:13
Hi all,
I am going to start painting my figures this weekend! Any idea if the painting guide here is a vailable as a pdf download? I would like to just download it and print it rather than page by page

It is a great resource and exactly what I have been looking for - just greedy I suppose

As I have heard, in days of yore, game companies had a subscription service. Basically you paid ahead of time and they sent you one of every new product. I'm not sure of all the details, but it serves as a starting point for my idea...

Now since we live in the age of credit cards I believe the following scheme would work out well for DOW...

For every BL expansion released DOW will automatically charge your credit card and ship you off the expansion on the release date. Perhaps since DOW is now getting your business guaranteed they can give a slight discount $5 or so, OR free shipping..something like that!

So come on DOW..think it over!

some house rules Sat, 03 March 2007 10:19
Here's a few house rules i thought i'd share. These rules have come about either through things that have come up during play that we feel need tweaking to the existing rules, or as additions that we thought would make the game more interesting.

Units

King's Guard
One heavy infantry unit on both armies in the center is dubbed "King's Guard" and given one extra figure. King's Guard units have the following special abilities/drawbacks.
Bravest of the Brave - they are considered supported when they are adjacent to one unit
In His service - the first hit against them of any type is ignored, as if it never happened. The second hit is negated, when applicable, by the heavy infantry armor rule.
For the King! - when adjacent units are attacked ( if they are bold or not ) they ignore one retreat flag. Bold adjacent units may ignore a total of two retreat flags.
The King is Dead! - when their flag is captured, the king's guard counts as Three victory points.
Long live the King! - the hex where the king's guard was eliminated is marked with a victory token, and if that site is recaptured the king's guard only counts as one victory point, instead of three. If the hex is lost again it can be reclaimed to restore the two victory points.
Rouse the loyal Knights - moving the king's guard requires you to activate the unit twice, however their movement is identical to any other heavy infantry ( 1 hex + battle ). Activating them for combat only requires you to activate them once. Cards that "activate all units" of the red banners, foot charge or a lore card that activates units can activate the King's Guard without any other considerations; however, cards that "activate one unit" such as Leadership, cannot.
Save the King! - If three or more retreat flags are rolled by either side in combat involving the King's Guard the guard must retreat one hex. This movement is considered immediately prior to the application of the other retreat flags ( whichever were applicable after any supporting/bold rules ) and immediately after the combat itself.
The King serves None! - no other modifications to this unit may be done ( none of its men may be healed by cleric lore cards, and no additional men may be added to it by warrior abilities, etc. ).
Wise counsel -the king's guard cannot be the target of "insta-kill" abilites ( ie - fireball ).

Combat Modifications

Volley Fire
If two archer units are adjacent and fire at the same enemy unit the two archers fire at the same time and role one bonus dice ( ie 2 + 2 + 1 = 5 dice ). This counts as two units activation, and any movement penalties still apply. Volley fire only applies to two units of the same type ( two crossbows, two long bows etc ). Lore cards which effect ranged combat or dice rolls are applied before the bonus volley fire bonus.

Heavy Infantry Armor
The first hit of any type against supported heavy infantry acquired during melee combat, including ranged, is ignored. Lore based damage is applied as normal, including special attacks by creatures.

Retreat Rules
When a flanking unit attacks from the side you cannot retreat across the enemy line, and end up in a hex where you're still adjacent to an enemy unit. If you must retreat multiple hexes and you would end up one or two hexes in front of the enemy line, then retreat directly towards your own side. Otherwise, the retreat should be towards the sides, skewed towards that units own back line unless it would place you adjacent to an enemy unit.

Lore Cards

Attacking Terrain
Cards which require you to select a terrain type do not effect the entire board, instead you select one terrain hex. The card then effects that hex, and all other connected hexes of the same type: ie - an entire mountain chain or forest.

Ditching Lore Cards
A player may, instead of drawing more lore or cards, pay one lore to discard a lore card of his choice.

Splash Damage
The lore card Fireball effects the targeted unit/hex normally, as the card describes, and is also rolled against each of the adjacent hexes for damage. The instant killing of the targeted unit applies as normally if a lore is rolled, however lore rolled against any other unit in an adjacent hex counts only as a miss.

....

thoughts?

Replacement figures, and paint stripping Mon, 12 March 2007 04:33
Hm. I'm going to attempt my figures. I intend to use the dip method (well, the painted version, at least) in order to avoid going insane.

I'm somewhat concerned, however. These things are absolutely tiny, and while I was working on my first try today, I realized how hard a time I was having seeing it.

Is there anyway to buy replacements/extra figures?

Anyone have any good paint removal techniques that won't damage the fragile plastic? (I'm pretty sure Simple Green would do it, but I'd like to hear some experienced opinions, if possible.)

Is a level 1 Warrior mandatory? Sat, 07 April 2007 01:39
I don't see a downside to picking a level 1 warrior for my war council every game.
Only two level dependant spells if I remember correctly but a bunch of spells that are very useful at level 1.

I think often it basically comes down to choosing whether to get one more level for the commander or to put that one level in the warrior. I think the warrior would frequently prove to be more important.

Right now my two basic war council builds are:

L3 Cleric, L1 Warrior, L2 Commander

L1 Warrior, L1 Rogue, L1 Wizard, L3 Commander

In both cases I have no doubts about including the L1 Warrior.

I've been working on an ambush scenario, and have realized that I need Cliffs to represent it properly. It's funny, but before reading the Call to Arms downloadable rules, I would have made the scenario within the limits of the terrain, but now, being perhaps too much of a perfectionist, I can't! Confused

A homage to Tremours - A different type of creature Fri, 11 May 2007 00:00
Mongolian Death Worm

Banner colour: Red
Movement: 4 hex and battle (see special below)
Retreat: 2 hex/flag
Weapon: Big Mouth
Damage: 4 dice
Bonus strike: yes
Special powers and characteristics:

Movement
When moving identify a target hex (within range limit) and roll 1 dice:
on any Helmet the creature will Rise on target,
Orange shield back one hex and to the left
Black flag back one hex
Lore back one hex and to the right
If the resultant (or target) hex is a hill or a river then it will remain where it started its movement from.

It will attack any unit or Creature above it when it Rises whether friend or enemy.
It must move to engage any ‘giant’ creatures on the board, though can attack units en-route. (See the Tremours films if you really want to know why)

Underground creature
It can not be targeted for melee or Missile attacks, can only be damaged in battlebacks and Lore cards.

It can not provide support.

Son of Worm
When the Worm dies one green unit will emerge in the three hexes nearest the controlling commander, they will engage the nearest unit (except one of their own) friend or foe, the round afterwards they end their initial frenzy and move as normal.
Treat as normal Green units except they can only support each other and do not count towards enemy victory points when destroyed.

Last creature from me, I think I'll turn my hand to other concepts next.....

Is the goblin skirmishers set going to include the ostrich riders that are in the Call to Arms art? Looking at ThoughtHammer's description of the game contents, I don't see them.

Are they going to be in the "still-under-wraps Goblins Specialist set" mentioned in the blog? Any idea when we might see them? This year still?

Editor needs a way to specify expansions (and other fixes) Mon, 14 May 2007 22:55
Dear Dow,
Could you possibly add an option to the editor to specify if any expansions are needed to play the scenario?

For example, right now there is an option to choose whether the scenario uses a single board or an epic board (2 boards). Could you add a similar choice selection for each of the expansions?

Since Call to Arms has been released, there are new terrain tiles banners that make it necessary to denote whether the CtA expansion is needed to set up the scenario. As more expansions are released, it will even get more imperative to easily specify which expansions are needed, or it will become a real chore to figure out which scenarios can be used with whatever expansions (if any) the player owns.

Oh, BTW, the Adventure Verification part of the editor doesn't seem to work well, having let me create scenarios with too many hills and or woods although the editor seemed to think it was all right (luckily, I playtest before releasing any scenarios). Since I assume you will be working on it to add the new CtA terrain, anyhow, could you fix this?

Thanks. Smile

I have both the Hill Giant and the Earth Elemental but haven't used them yet. This is partly because I don't know how they fit on a War Council. Spiders are green and take one War Council token at set-up. Do the other two monsters take two tokens because they are blue or only one?

Thanks in advance,
Bob

Battlelore in UK with promo figures.... Fri, 18 May 2007 01:04
Hi all,

with the news of a free epic expansion if you have two sets I thought I'd chance my arm and see if I could find anywhere that still had the promotional figures and guess what, the answer is yes!! Details below, they are all in the UK btb:

www.leisuregames.com
need to express an interest in the models (a couple of each left)
www.puzzleplaza.co.uk
comes with 1 figure, I guess it would be the earth elemental
www.area51.online.co.uk
1 set with miniatures
www.boardgamecompany.co.uk
they have 1 hill giant left but you'll need to speak to them (plus pay an extra£5)

(I have both models from another store that was down to their last set)

I've updated this historical scenario with the new cliff terrain for a more authentic representation of the battlefield. There's an optional Lore variant included too.

Scenario is here: http://www.battlelore.com/index.php?t=battlelore_editor& sub=view&id=327&returnto=battlelore_editor&game= &rid=124149&S=f7d1ead1d94d8fdb6e8c181595636297

This morning, someone asked for my permission to translate and post a strategy article I wrote on BoardGameGeek. If he hasn't already, he will be soon posting it to the French Battlelore Forum.

I figured I should share it here as well for those not on BoardGameGeek: http://www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/164161

I hope to post part 2 in another 2 weeks.

House Rule : « Soft Magic »

Because sometime we could be tired by the power of magic and its randomness, here some house rule, for a softer and more control magic.

Only one spell by turn can be play.
The lore token, are only collected with the lore symbol on a dice roll (attack and battle back)
Each lore master give a unique spell, and the lore master level determine the cost and the power of the spell. See below.
The War council it's made, exactly like the basic rule.

Cleric

Miracle Healing

Cost: Cleric Level+1, lore token (up 2 to 4 pts)
When to play : With your command card
Target: 1 wounded unit
Effect:
Roll 1d/Level +1d
the target regain 1 fig, for each lore symbol and its colour's banner obtain on the dice roll. The target cannot heal more than its original number of fig.

Wizard

Magic missile

Cost: Wizard Level+1, lore token (up 2 to 4 pts)
When to play : Battle phase, only at range attack.
Target: 1 of your own unit, without any enemy at its contact
Effect :
The unit can make a range attack to a max of 4 hex.
Roll 1d/Level +1d
You hit for each lore symbol and colour's banner of the enemy unit you attack. Flag are taken as usual.

Rogue

Rogue mouvement

Cost: Rogue Level+1, lore token (up 2 to 4 pts)
When to play: During the movement phase.
Target: a activated unit
Effect :
Rogue Level 1 : The target gain 1 extra movement hex
Rogue level 2 : The target gain 2 extra movement hex, and can ignore all terrain type, and all unit (friendly and foe), the unit must finish its movement on a valid hex.
Rogue level 3 : Same than level 2 + gain 1 extra dice in melee attack.

Warrior

Warrior fury

Cost: Warrior Level+1, lore token (up 2 to 4 pts)
When to play: Battle phase, only at melee attack.
Target: a activated unit
Effect :
Warrior Level 1 : The target gain 1 extra battle dice.
Warrior Level 2 : Same than level 1 + hit with the lore symbol.
Warrior Level 3 : Same than level 2 + roll once again (only once) bonus strike for extra hit.

With a low lore variant, the Earth elemental, and the wizard special terrain must be change like this :

Earth elemental : base mouvement of 1 hex + X hex.
X = the number of lore token you want to spend.

wizard special terrain :

if you activate a unit allready on the terrain, the unit gain "enchanted weapon" until the end of the game.
After enchanted the unit, discard the wizard special terrain.

enchanted weapon : the unit hit with lore symbol.

Oh yeah,

I'm still waiting for my copy of Epic to arrive(come on!), but of course we played it on a selfmade map, dozens of times, and things got even better with the revised rules to combine it with CtoA!

But now what? Every day I look ,what , 4 or 5 times for a new Chronicle... I want news. I like it , I want to know whats coming, to my prrrrrrrrrrecious.
Yes I want to know about the Dwarven and Goblin sets, but even more about the 100 years war, cause of that, I know nothing. Or the heroes.... oh man. Can't wait?

What you waiting for to hear and read about?

When I saw the news on the blog titled Goblins invent the printing press! I thought "meh..." and did not bother to check it out. Was I ever wrong!

Now I need two additional things to make my BattleLore dreams come true.

1. A fan fiction .pdf exporter. Same as the adventure one but this one would add the pretty graphics to text only. This should be easier to do than the current adventure exporter.

2. A service to order production quality hard copies of these adventure and fan fiction .pdf's.

Keep up the good work DoW!

PC Printing Scenario Problems Fri, 29 June 2007 17:48
I am trying to print out the adventures, preferably on a single letter-sized page with varying results. Lograno is a particular problem. I've tried direct printing in Windows and I have tried Adobe Professional working with the pdf version. In either case I can't seem to either change the margins or to reduce the size of each adventure down so that it will fit on a single page of letter paper. The Betrand du Guesclin side of the page is invariably cut off.

Is there any easy way to print a scenario complete on a single letter-size page without using a different program?

When I save the Logrono official adventure in PDF I can't seem to get included in the file the Set Up Order on the right side of the adventure. Am I doing something wrong? I also can't get the adventure to print entirely on a single page

Crisis in Avignon : a long winded Battle Report Mon, 30 July 2007 23:33
Crisis in Avignon

This is my first attempt at writing a session report, so please forgive any lack of writing skill included Embarassed (I'm more of a math person). In a very rare event I was able to talk my wife into playing a game of Battlelore this weekend Smile . I chose "Crisis in Avignon" because it looked like a very straightforward way to introduce the use of Lore to her. To add a little flare to the game I added the Spider to the Pennants group and the Earth Elemental to the Standards (so the War Council was actually 7 pts). I also boosted the Victory points to 6 to draw the battle out a little longer Very Happy .

She was given command of Sir Hugh Calverley's (Standards) army while I, obviously, took command of Sire Arnoul d'Audrehem's (Pennants) army. I would love to write this battle report in character, but this may go beyond my writing ability quite a bit.

Opening of the battle - morning: Standards: 0 Pennants: 0
As mentioned above the spider was set for the Pennants army very back center, while the earth elemental was retained for the Standards back center. Otherwise the setup was as seen in the 'Crisis in Avignon'. Calverley (Standards) opens the battle with in-effective bowfire from the center. d'Audrehem (Pennants) answers with an immediate movement of his center guard, including the spider scuttling forward as fast as it's wicked long legs could take it. Next, Calverley called to all footmen to join the onslaught with a sudden attack in the center, bringing infantry from the back and sides into the center to face off against d'Audrehem's center. The Pennants spider struck out with a Leadership bonus, unfortunately doing no damage accept causing a little fear in a heavy infantry unit which is easy shrugged off by infantry's bolded formation.

Mid-Morning: Standards: 0 Pennants: 0
With the morning battle having the sudden rush of both armies in the middle, Calverley decides to fake out the Pennants with minor movement to the right, while his true intention was to bring out his secret weapon; he commands his right medium horse to stand over the enchanted elemental gateway in hope of evoking the earth elemental, unfortunately the elemental gods were not listening.
d'Audrehem takes the right infantry movement as a threat and calls for his bowmen to Darken the sky and repel the enemy. Amazing enough the left wing Pennant bowmen deliver 50% causalities to the heavy Standard footmen, while the center bowmen do some minor damage to a Standard medium Infantry unit.
Calverley is outraged by this miss-fortune and continues to move his right flank forward, hoping to bring the Pennant left flank within swords length.
d'Audrehem, now running low on good options, decides to bide time with more right flank archery fire, while he contemplates more effective assault methods (i.e. get rid of those darn right wing scout cards- two of them! Mad ). The archer fire only slowed Calverley's men forward progress.

Mid-Day: Standards: 1 Pennants: 0
With the clash of the center group and forward movement of the Standard left, the gap between the armies is now at sword length, but the only serious causalities are caused by archers.
With a call for all available medium troops to battle Cleverley finally gets his wish, the eath elemental summoning succeeds. Calverley also begins movement on his left flank.
d'Audrehem attempts to break through the center by another attack from his spider and infantry. The spider webs the Standard's center heavy footmen, but little other damage is done (rolled 3d w/ lore bonus attack dice for the spider and rolled three lore...argh!..should have opted to save some of that lore for some poison...but just went for the web).
Calverley changes focus and begins move his left flank forward.
d'Audrehem once again calls on his archers to Darken the Sky against encroaching enemy infantry and horse. Minor effects are felt by the Standards.
Calverley again moves his left flank into melee, with the help of some black magic, he scores a devastating hit against some weakened medium Pennant infantry (first casualties) with his medium horse. His horse charge on and commit another horrible strike against the Pennant's heavy infantry, leaving 25% only remaining for the unit.
Seeing the impending doom of his right heavy infantry, d'Audrehem calls upon his wizard to portal the hacked heavy infantry to safety of the center.

Late Afternoon: Standards: 3 Pennants: 0
Calverley calls to his forces to vanquish the bowmen of d'Audrehem's by calling all available medium foot and horse charge against all Pennant bowmen. Calverley also orders his earth elemental into the back center of d'Audrehem's (Pennants) forces. The carnage was huge as to the left d'Audrehem's bowmen are trampled under Standard horsemen hooves, while Standard infantry slash the Pennant's archers to near nothing on the right.
d'Audrehem, seeing his right flank failing, calls in for support from the center and hacks many Standard infantry and horse down.
Calverley, completely focused on the destruction of the archers again attacks the Pennants left flank, finishing off the remaining archers running them into the Rhone and extracting further casualties against d'Audrehem's medium horse and heavy infantry.
d'Audrehem attempts to mop up the few remain Standard troops on the left but instead of eliminating the unit only forces them to retreat.
Calverley now focus' on the Earth Elemental and center troops. Only small casualties and tremors where felt.
d'Audrehem seeing his army greatly weakened and his flanks reduced to a few half strength units, decides that it's time to call on the forces of nature. The ploy could be his own undoing but he hopes that the Greater Forces will find pity upon him. "Rumble those hills, Cleric" he calls. The cleric slumps to a praying position and with some strange murmurs the hills around the battlefield shake. Unfortunately the bedrock is strong near Avignon and the outcome is only a few casualties and panicked troops (along with a few friendly casualties Crying or Very Sad ).

Dusk: Standards: 4 Pennants: 0
Calverley sickened by d'Audrehem's feeble attempts to shake him from the land, pushes forward on his right flank. The Standard cavalry slaughters a few remaining Pennant cavalry and follows up with a charge onto the bridge of the Rhone, capturing it.
d'Audrehem makes one last attempt to chase down and eliminate a few remain Standard units, only one was found and eliminated (my wife gave me one extra turn).

The outcome: Standards: 6 Pennants: 1 Shocked Surprised Embarassed
Well the outcome was fairly obvious. Standards (my wife) totally humiliated the Pennants (me - that's going mean a lot dish washing for me Crying or Very Sad ). It might be hard to tell from the way I wrote the battle report, but the effectiveness of the battling seemed very even, only difference was the Standards where able to finish off the diminished Pennant units, where the diminished Standards, either by skill or luck, ran away before being eliminated. We both played a lot of Lore (nearly every turn from turn 3 on). Pleasantly the LORE brought a lot of extra fun mystery and fun the game. The creatures, on the other hand, where nearly in-effective. This was mainly due to lack of center cards we both had and just poor dice rolls. Even though I got mauled pretty badly, point wise, the game was a lot of fun. So fun, my wife agreed to play at least once a month Very Happy (much better than not at all!). As for command cards I got the shorter stick, but not enough of a disadvantage to whimper about, too much.

Lessons:
You must finish off diminished enemy units.
LORE rocks! Even the minor (+1 attack, etc) LORE cards added a great deal to the game.
You can't count on the creatures to sway the outcome of the battle as a whole. They are powerful and fun to play, but alone, they cannot win the game.
The game has a lot of luck involved (we all know this). However, this can be a good thing, in that if we re-played this scenario ten times, every time would be different.
Loosing can be fun. I didn't notice how badly I was being beaten until about turn 8. I was so absorbed/entertained by what was going in the game, I really didn't have time to worry about whether I was winning or loosing.

Thanks for reading!

I am very happy with this set and the other exapansions. I like the comment from the scenario write up "Would seem these Goblins will mount any beast and ride it into battle."

Howver, I would like to suggest an improvement for future sculpts. While I have no complaint about the "character" in the sculpts of the Goblinoids and the Dwarves, couldn't the weapons be in a more natural position? Why would the Hyena Riders swords be back like that? Same with the Ostrich riders shooting back and to the sky- the picture on the box is so much better. And while I am at it, I really find that I dislike the goblin and the dwarven spears.

Battle On.

My friends,

today me and three of my friends did a game of BattleLore; Epic, Reluctant Allies, all four expansions (in fact 2 dwarven battallions, 2 goblin skirmishers, 1 100 years war and 1 goblin marauders), game set-up by the Call to Arms system... man was I looking forward to this was feast!
1 of my friends was new to the game and had a hard time catching up because of all the info, another friend didn't get it all the last time we played together (few months ago now).
First question rose when we had to pick our specialists. Mind you: to keep things simple for the new guy, we left out the war council and lore cards (bummer.... but no FF, HR and so on which is good IMO). So I picked half of the CtoA Specialist Cards and left them out of the game (no Lore council, why the specialists right..?)
Still had masses of specialist cards left. We really wanted to use the units of the Specialist Packs so, and this might have been a mistake, we all picked 5 (!) specialist cards. Of course, almost every single Blue Banner foot unit was replaced by a specialist. We changed the Dwarven specialist cards, because they say: replace a dwarven unit.... what dwarven unit? in the original game there hardly are any.... so we changed that to whatever race and switch them for the discribed dwarves, just like the gobbos and human specialist cards say.
the result was: hours of set-up, an epic board with a very high density of units, with every unit available via the expansions on it. Only the poor Hyena Riders were left out....
Maybe we shouldn't have wanted to use all of the units (in variaty, not numbers) and pick less specialist cards... but what is the fun of new units and not use them?
I wonder, does DOW still wants to use only 2 specialist cards per player, even with such a great variaty in specialist cards and units?
hmmmm.
the battle was (is in fact, we'll continue tomorrow)utter chaos, lots of fun. The Goblin band is fantastic! Oh my, forget about keeping formations. Drummers are nice within red spear gobs units, ostrich riders are super fast.
I guess next game we'll take it more easy. Maybe 2 specialist per player in reluctant alllies. 4 or 5 seem ok with a standard/epic game. now it was too much.
I regret having bought 2 copies of both dwarven battallion and goblin skirmishers. No need for it, but now they're in the house, they'll make good use.

BattleLore is becoming a big game!

Still, but i'll have to play more to be sure, I'm thinking of a different army deployment system. I'll let you guys know.
Anyone else had games like we had today? Let me know!

have a nice day!

BGG.CON: Anybody interested in a tournament? Wed, 29 August 2007 22:29
So who is going to BGG.CON? Anybody interested in a BattleLore tournament? Or maybe just simply meeting up to play BattleLore?

Here's the thread where GAWD proposes a tournament format.

Call to Arms sold out? Tue, 04 September 2007 23:45
I'm trying to find the call to arms expansion in Sweden but it's sold out everywhere. I have bought most of my BL stuff directly from DOWs eurostore but now it's sold out there too? Will I be able to order CTA expansion from DOW at some future point?

I'm very disturbed by the fact that I now have all expansions except CTA... Mad

New Wars of the Roses Scenario: The First Battle of St. Albans Fri, 07 September 2007 17:47
This scenario is now active in the Fans Adventures section. It makes full use of the HYW expansion, and the Leadership rules introduced in another thread. There will be scenarios for all the key engagements in the WotR forthcoming, plus campaign rules to link them all together. Hope you like the first one Smile

Extended Historical Notes:

Lancastrian notables
King Henry VI (took no part in fighting - he sat under a tree for the whole battle)
Humphrey Stafford, Duke of Buckingham (placed in charge of the army by Henry only the previous day)
Edmund Beaufort, Duke of Somerset (hated by Richard of York)
Henry Percy, Earl of Northumberland
Lord Clifford of Skipton

Yorkist notables
Richard Plantagenet, Duke of York
Richard Neville, Earl of Warwick
Richard Neville, Earl of Salisbury

The First Battle of St Albans was the first battle of the Wars of the Roses and was fought on May 22, 1455 in the town of St Albans, 22 miles (35.5 km) north of London. Richard Plantagenet, Duke of York and his ally, Richard Neville, Earl of Warwick defeated the Lancastrians under Edmund Beaufort, 2nd Duke of Somerset, who was killed.

In an attempt to avoid being outflanked by the 3,000 strong Yorkist army, the Lancastrian army of 2,000 troops pulled back into the town and built barricades to defend against an attack from the Key Field to the east. The bulk of Henry's forces were surprised by the speed of Richard's attack; most of the army was expecting a peaceful resolution similar to the one at Blackheath in 1452, and the leaders of both sides had been negotiating minutes before the attack. However, two frontal assaults down the narrow streets against the barricades made no headway and resulted in heavy casualties for the Yorkists.

Warwick (later known as the Kingmaker) took his reserve troops through an unguarded part of the town's defences, following a path through back lanes and gardens. With a blast of his trumpets and and a cry of 'a-Warwick! a-Warwick!' the 25-year-old Earl smashed the Lancastrian line in two. Suddenly he appeared in the Market Square where the main body of Henry's troops were talking and resting. There is evidence they were not yet expecting to be involved in the fighting, as many were not even wearing their helmets. Warwick charged instantly with his small force, routing the Lancastrians, killing the Duke of Somerset, and capturing the King, thereby making his mark in military history. The Lancastrians manning the barricades realised the Yorkists had bypassed them, and fearing an attack from behind abandoned their positions and fled the town.

The First Battle of St Albans was politically a complete victory for York: he had captured the King and returned himself to complete power; his hated rival Somerset was dead (Somerset fought bravely but was killed outside the Castle Inn - a soothsayer had predicted that he would die in the shadow of a castle...); and Warwick's arch-enemies Henry Percy, 2nd Earl of Northumberland and Lord Clifford both fell during the rout.

Dwarven Battalion scenarios. Mon, 10 September 2007 09:17
Is it just me or the scenarios in the Dwarven battalion set are probably the worst scenarios produced by DOW?

Both scenarios favour heavily the dwarves and the only way for the pennant player to win if probably drawing three forward cards in a row.....and some lucky rolls also........ Especially in the second scenario, the bagpipers can rout maybe two or three goblin units and elimenate them pretty easily.

Ok, we want to test the new dwarven units but IMHO, both scenarios are pretty "silly"......

Maybe the goblins should have an objective just to give them some winning chance.

Hope you like this, the third one.

By the way, these first three battles are all ditch/ brook crossing affairs, though each with their own flavour. You'll find Wakefield, the next battle, somewhat different Smile

Next Round of Open Questions - Get 'em in! Wed, 19 September 2007 16:46
I have a decent list of questions already to submit. I spoke with Eric and would like to try to get the 2nd round of open questions to him after this weekend. He will be gone for business shortly thereafter so If we miss this window, it may be another 2 weeks before we can get anything from him.

So as before, please list any of your unanswered questions below. A simple link to an existing thread that has received no official confirmation is acceptable as well.

I will close this off this weekend. Let's say Sunday at noon GMT. I'll gather then up at that point and send an email to DOW so they can have it first thing in the morning on Monday.

Thanks!

Epic - Impromptu Mode - clarification Tue, 02 October 2007 08:16
It would seem, based on reading the Epic manual for Impromptu mode, that only the banners shown/listed on page 79 are the ones each side gets. And as such, the extra 13-15 banners one gets with the game should NOT be included.

Is that how others read that ?
