Hi folks,
the October version is finally up. The restructuring took longer than expected, but now I can offer you the same layout as used in the Lore Cards Compendium, allowing for easy page replacement between revisions.

Seige of Augusta BattleLore Tournament
|

Hi all,
The local gamers in and around Augusta GA put on a large gaming convention called Siege of Augusta each January. This year's event is the last weekend in January (25-27) and features a variety of board and miniature games.
Would there be interest in doing a BattleLore tournament at this con?
Drop me a note and let me know.
Our tournament website is here http://www.siegeofaugusta.com/cgi/index.php

Epic Command Rack Variant?
|
Fri, 21 December 2007 03:33

|
 |
I've tried searching, but are there any tested or suggested variants regarding the use of the shared epic command rack posted on these boards?
Basically I'm somewhat annoyed by the lack of card management available in the shared epic command rack and was looking for suggestions on how to make it more card-management/skill-based. My main gripe with the shared command rack is that the 'best' card always gets played ahead of worse cards, otherwise your opponent just uses the 'best' card against you the following turn. For example, no one would ever play patrol center when an advance center card was in the shared command rack. And in most cases its best to move the most # of units possible even when moving them forward [at least until battle starts].
I'm finding that playing Epic makes card management go out the window mostly, as in a non-epic normal game it takes a certain level of "skill" or foresight to play worse cards on non-critical turns and to have the right advances, attacks, foot onslaught, mounted charge, etc. cards for when the main battle finally begins. Also to a lesser extent the issue of playing 2 cards a turn also makes card-management less important because while in a normal game if one player advances center and moves on average 5 units and the opponent can at best retaliate with a patrol down the center, moving 2 units; well 5 vs 2 units over the course of 1 turn is a big advantage. But when adding the shared epic command rack on average allows each player to move 3 additional units a turn, player 1 would move 8 units while player 2 moves 5 which isn't as big an advantage in absolute terms.
Any suggestions for variants?
******************************************
This part below isn't a necessary read, just what I've thought over to address the situation. Comments are welcome.
My current way of handling the situation would be to:
A) Allow each player to have their own 3 card command rack, that way you have to manage it over the course of the game [get rid of bad cards before the main battle starts]. This seems somewhat doable, can anyone think of any issues with following this approach?
B) Play 1 card a turn, but somehow double the magnitude of a section card in epic play, (tactics cards follow Epic rules). Eg. Scout card move 2 units, Patrol 4, Attack 6, Advance 8-12 (depending on commander level). On the March and Forward can be doubled without any issues, although Forward may get a bit powerful.
For the single section cards however rather than move all units in one section allow the player to perhaps roll a die to determine which section a small portion of units move in to simulate the fact that the shared epic rack allows units to move in different sections simultaneously. For instance, Scout both units could move in the card's played section, patrol 3 out of 4 units move in the card's played section, roll 1 die to determine which section the last unit moves in. Attack card 4 units move in the card's section, roll 2 dice to determine which section the last 2 units move in. Advance roll 3-5 (depending on commander level) dice. So the bulk of the units still move in the card's primary section but a smaller proportion of units are a bit more unpredictable.
This approach seems a bit overly complex.
C) Just play 1 card per turn in Epic.
This somewhat distorts lore accumulation and makes lore have a greater impact on the game since there would be more turns in a game than normal, and allows for playing more lore cards at the start of each turn.
D) Instead of a shared command rack, let each player play with 3 extra cards in hand but play 2 section cards or 1 tactics card as in epic rules.
I think this approach doesn't address card management quite as well, since it allows a player to get rid of 2 'bad' cards out of their hand when dumping cards or play 2 really good cards on an important turn and they don't have to worry about managing their own hand and the epic command rack simultaneously since its all bundled together. For instance if they had 2 Advances in their main hand, and 3 patrols in their epic command rack, under this option since the hand is pooled, they could play 2 patrols on the same turn or 2 Advances on the same turn, whereas in a real Epic game they'd have to play 1 advance and 1 patrol.
Are there any other comments or suggestions on the issue? I'd be interested in hearing any alternate solutions to addressing card management in Epic games.

I will be attending the Atlanta Game Fest on Jan 19 and 20. If you would be interested in playing some Battle Lore, please let me know and I'll make sure I bring the game. If you have never had a chance to play with the hill giant or earth elemental, I've got a scenario that involves both. Information about the Atlanta Game Fest can be found at: http://www.atlantagamefest.com/
I live in the Augusta, GA area and will also be running a Battle Lore event the previous weekend at the Siege of Augusta http://www.siegeofaugusta.com/cgi/index.php

This scenario is now active in the Fans Adventures section. It makes full use of the HYW expansion, and the Leadership rules introduced in another thread, plus introduces rules for Burgundian Handgunners. There will be scenarios for all the key engagements in the WotR forthcoming.
Campaign rules are already available to link them all together here:

Hope you like this, the 6th scenario.

Some interesting observations (including Scottish) about scenarios
|

If one excludes the CtA and Epic, which basically for the most part have no dates for their scenarios except for 1, one sees there were two pretty ugly years to be a soldier.
One is the year 1373 when there were 7 battles to be fought. And almost can make them campaign, since one side had the same leader throughout, but one had a change after the 2nd battle (maybe someone ventured a tad big out too far - or wondered how much of a sword can pentrated the heart? <G>)
The other bad year is Spring / April 1362, where they were 6 scenarios. 4 in the Spring and 2 in April. As above, could make them campaigns since one side leader survived throughout whereas the other side, yep after the 2nd battle didn't make it.
Based on the official scenarios, there definitely is a big lull from 1384 to 1415. So I suspect a few more scenarios will fit that gap. Also some of the 1200s could use some new scenarios as well.
As for periods of time, here they are, in case one cares :
Scottish Wars - 1297 to 1346
Hundred Years War - 1346 to 1429 (obviously probably up to 1445/6)
Dwarven Battalion - 1373
Goblin Marauders - 1373
Goblin Skirmishers - 1373 to 1384 - Could this be a typo for the web release version since the other 2 scenarios are in 1383/1384 ???

Vassal Battlelore Ladder available now
|
Thu, 17 January 2008 06:20

Seems the folks at vassal have allowed ladders in the last week and thus there is now a ladder for Battlelore (likewise for M44 in case others were wondering).
Thus to sign up, you need to go to the following link :
http://www.vassalengine.org/tournaments//index.php
And sign up. Also remember your member #, since that is what you need to login to the site. As we get the #s up, tournys are possible to do using this site as well.
As admin for the ladder, it also probably would be nice to use your Vassal name as your player name.
Thanks and look forward to seeing you there

Gencon 2008
|

With registration up for Gencon 2008 I have been wondering what games I will play this year. I usually play tournaments for various miniatures games, but I am in more of a boardgame mode this time. I didn't make it to Gencon last year because of our newest little addition to the family being born at the same time as Gencon 2007. Hence, I did not get to see what all Battlelore events transpired. I know the year before saw a lot of Memoir 44 going on in the boardgame area. Does anyone know if there are official tournaments from DoW or fan based get togethers? With DDM switching to 2.0 constructed and my lack of interest in the painting department for Warmachine, I am really wanting to do some Battlelore or C&C Ancients this year. Another important facet of all this is whether or not I will need to bring the games themselves as we all know how heavy and bulky they are. My suitcase is usually overflowing as it is with games and souvenirs(spelling?) to the point that I don't how I would bring either one of those games and any expansions.
Thanks,
Mike

The Battle of Marston Moor is now posted in the Fan's Adventures section.
The rules for unit types used in English Civil War battles can be found in the files section here. You need to join the Yahoo Group to gain access to the files, but it's free, quick, and painless.
There are two small changes needed to the Command card deck which I'll post in the aformentioned files section a little later.
Comments from any, especially ECW afficionados, will be most welcome

Dear fellow boardgamers,
time for a major update to the compendia.
On http://www.battleloremaster.com/2008/04/the_battlelore_compe ndiums_apr.html you can find the latest revisions of both compendia. In addition to that, almost all titles have been redone for easier reference in the index. The back side is, that you need to reprint the whole compendia to make use of the changes.
If you find any typos, bad english, or whatever, just tell me and I will include it in the next revision.
Dark.

3 races 1 army - aka the Horde
|
Fri, 09 May 2008 19:42

Races of the Horde
Still a bit bare-bonesy at the moment as I can't find the miniatures I envisage.
First the infantry Races
Only come in Green but do have ranged and melee varieties
Second the cavalry race
Only comes in Blue
Third (and finally) the creature Unit
Only comes in Red (see below for more details
They deploy as Goblins do, with 1 red unit being replaced by the Creature race otherwise all infantry become green, all Cavalry Blue.
How the horde works:
If any Infantry Race unit is touching a Cavalry Race unit then it gains +1 Bold and is partially supported by the cavalry
so two infantry race supported by a Cavalry Race would be result in the Infantry Race units being Bold2 and the Cavalry Race Bold1
Inf - Inf
\ /
Cav
Creature Race
All Horde units 3 hexes away or less get +1 base battle pool dice but cannot retreat (so flag hits remove figures), all other Horde units will retreat toward the monster instead of the back line.
Foul stench
No non Horde friendly unit will will go within 1 hex.
Enemy units must roll number dice equal to base battle pool if no lore symbols comes up they must fall back 1 hex other wise stay put.
If the Monster moves into range of other units (foe or FRIEND) each unit must make the same roll or retreat back
Lore Master/ card modifications:
This army will always get 1 creture for free during deplyment, additional creatures and other Creatures are bougth as normal.
When choosing lore deck make a medieval deck first, the remainder of lore deck is selected as normal.
When casting The Horde pays 1 less lore than card list for Medieval cards with no extra for not having appropriate Lore master and two more lore with all others in addition to any costs caused by not having appropriate lore master
The only mini I have found so far is for the creatures:
http://www.pendraken.co.uk/sub%20page/dungeon.htm - DN 11 for the Monster the rest will be too pricey for the other units.
Any thoughts welcome and suggestions for models (really alien looking but no 'guns' just natural weapons kind of like the Tyranids from you-know-who) and I can't scuplt for toffee.

Goblins have a unique heirachy the fastest strongest and cruelest rule over the lesser goblins so usually the ruling goblin will have a bodyguard unit known as scarab guard these units are known for their expert fighting abillty and ruthlessness in the field of battle.
goblin scarabs red banner weapon spear
are bold(but still subject to goblin run)
any unit adjacent to the scarabs are bold
a scarab unit can remove one figure to attack with five bl dice.
