New things today (see also the other bout the Scores & Ranks page).
- The "missed play bug" has been identified at last. (this is the bug where everyone is stuck waiting for a player to play his cards, althought the player did play already). A temporary fix was done, a complete rewrite of the code will occur tomorrow.
- Yesterday's server lock-up is definitely fixed (it was another deadly embrace).
- Some work on the server side (logs) to make better statistics on decks shuffling.

The ranking system is in !
|
Thu, 19 December 2002 20:55

|
 |
The ranking is system has been activated! (caution, long memo follows )
Today you can discover a first implementation of the scores and ranking system of Gang of Four Online. After you are connected, click on "My Account" in the upper right corner, then on the "Scores & Ranks" button in the list of buttons on the left.
Please read carefully what follows before telling us your remarks, questions and suggestions.
The Ranking Model:
After many internal discussions and simulations within Days of Wonder, we decided to perform a first test with a system inspired by Hardwood Hearts http://www.hardwoodhearts.com/. It is a ELO-based system (like the one used by chess federations), with a Provisional Ranking that converges quickly to a value that reflects your level.
You start with 1,500 points. For the first 20 games, you belong to the "Provisional Ranking". During this time, your score and rank will vary and can oscillate greatly. Don't panic, this is normal. For example, don't be surprised so see a player who just played once and is still better ranked than you. Over time, his score will adapt.
After 20 games, you are moved to the "Established Ranking" status. At that point, the ELO system is used going forward. I might go in more details about the ELO system in another memo, but to summarize, you just need to know that you can earn or loose up to 32 points in a game, depending on the difference between your ranking and the ranking of the others, on how you perform against the system expectations. As you can see, changes are pretty small and smooth, so there is no big risk even if you are out of luck one night.
Some details to know:
- There is little risk for an Established player to play with Provisional players, especially if the opponents have played only a few games before. The Established player's score will be almost unaffected. So you can play with beginners without any second thought.

- For the moment, the applet does not update the ranking information after each game. Therefore, it is normal to see your game history and ranks unchanged. No need to rush to the page when you beat Eric or Hadoken
. I run a script every 24 hours to recompute everything. Real-time update will be implemented shortly (Brice promised ).
- As there was not many games to test the system, I used all games, even aborted ones, as long as there was a score above 10.
- All games are used for now, wherever the "Rated Game" check box was on or off during the game creation. Here again, this is to have the largest pool as possible. In the final version, only Rated Games will be used for ranking.
- When we switch to the final version, all scores will be reset to 0.
- It is possible (OK, highly likely!) that we shall adjust the equations during Beta. Your score will then be recomputed completely, which will impact your ranking (however, your game history will be preserved). You have been warned

- Here is how it currently works: when a game is completed, the winning player is the only winner, the 3 others are all considered losers. This appeared to us as the best solution for the Gang of Four specificities. We think that we should also introduce some modifiers depending on the game was a long and close one or not. Your opinion on this matter are welcome.
- In the Game History, there are sometimes games will only 3 players. This is not a bug. This happens when you played against a new player who never confirmed his/her account registration. Unconfirmed accounts are vaporized after 7 days, this is why the player reference is gone.
I look forward to your feed-back and questions!

In the new version today:
- Several bug fixes in Straights comparison (thanks to John)
- Completely re-written the close/leave code in applet & server to get rid of the infamous clones or dead games.
- Tentative fix for the mysterious bug of disappearing text. This bug has already been reported to Apple and should be fixed in their upcoming 1.4.1 VM.
Merry Christmas from the Days of Wonder team !

|
Mon, 30 December 2002 18:56

|
 |
Today:
- Help button in the applet (will be active very soon)
- Improvement in the game creation user interface: we had noticed that some players would enter their personnal password when creating a new game, which would cause the game to become a private one. Then the poor souls would wait forever for other players to join...
- Rankscore and history are now automatically updated at the end of each game
- Server last lock-up is fixed.
- Piel Pikul's latest bug should be fixed now.

Pazzy & al.
what happened? Did one of the players got disconnected? I was watching the game with elyah, Kevinmd, etc... waiting to play and you all disappeared. if this was a bug on our end, we'd like to know about it. if it was a modem disconnect, the good news is next week's major release will have an auto-save and resume game feature for those kind of issues outside of our control

Lots of new features today (over 2 weeks of hard work) !
Main Features:
- Interrupted games can be resumed. This can be done directly from the lobby within 15 minutes after the interruption, by using a Resume Now button in the lobby. Beyond this 15 minutes window, you need to use the games history in the Scores page (see below)
- Resuming an interrupted game: from the games history of the Scores page, you can resume interrupted games (marked as "Aborted"). Click on the "Schedule..." link, and you can propose a time and date to the other players. The game will then appear as "Proposed for..." in their own game history. Then they can accept or ask for a change. When everybody has accepted the date and time, the game becomes "Scheduled for...". When the time is up, a "Join Now" link will appear. Clicking on it will take you directly to the table.
- Games Schedule page: this new page is in My Account, just below the Scores button. This shows two things: interrupted games that are being scheduled for resuming, and open scheduled games. Using the Schedule a New Game button, you can plan open games that others can join, and agree on a date and time with them. It works exactly like scheduling interrupted games, except that people can join or leave a game as long as it is not scheduled. Think of it as a convenient tool to set up rendez-vous.
- '?' tooltips button: in the lobby and in the games window, clicking on this button shows pop-up "tooltips" that gives help on elements.
- Help button: in the lobby, the help button brings up the Gang of Four summary cards in a slide show.
- Observe button: when you click on a game in progress, the Join button becomes Observe, and enables you to watch a game. You will see the hand of the best player and see the game as it goes. Note that you cannot chat in this mode, but that you can see the messages coming from the lobby (this way you know if anyone arrived in the lobby).
- Bell button: when the little bell icon is activated, your computer will beep (system beep) when a new user comes in. Click on the bell to turn it off.
- Find Players button: clicking on this button gives you some statistics about latest traffic, when the next open game is scheduled, etc. You also have a button to go directly to the Games Schedule page.
- Forum and Buy buttons: these are buttons that go directly to the Forums and Buy web pages.
- Player Information: when you click on a player's name, you see some information and statistics about him. For example, his preferred language, the time slot when he is active the most, his ranking, etc.
- New Ranking system: all ranking scores were recomputed, using all finished past games. For this reason, you will see a lower number of games than before. The main change in the computation is that the second player's score will generally go up too, and that there is no "drifting-to-zero" issue anymore. Note that ONLY finished games are used from now on. If you want to finish an interrupted game, use the new resuming feature
Other details and bug fixes:
- Free chat is the default option now.
- Lots of various bug fixes (too long and boring to list here).
Please contact us at support@daysofwonder.com if you encounter problems. If you have questions, please post on this forum.
Have fun,
The Gang Team

Serious bug in 22nd release.

Hello,
As you might have noticed, there was a serious defect in the last release, which prevented games to have more than 3 hands. Hopefully it may have been possible to resume those stuck games.
As the faulty programmer ( ) I'd like to say that the bug has been fixed and wanted to apologize about this mess (and yes, this is still a beta version, subject to problems).

Hello
The beta-test is almost finished, and there are a few bugs we can't reproduce on our test systems.
Especially the slowness while playing bug which seems to occur on Internet Explorer with the Micro$oft VM.
We need your help: if you experience this problem, please do the following:
- Setup IE to enable java console:
In the 'Tools' menu -> 'Internet Options' -> Advanced and check the 3 java relative checkboxes (namely logging, java console, and JIT)
- Restart fully IE by closing all its open windows.
- Connect to Gang of Four Online.
- Play until the game seems really slower than at the beginning.
- Open the Java Console (in the view menu), select this new window in order that it is topmost:
- Press the 'm' key.
- Press the 'g' key.
- Press the 'm' key.
- Press the 'f' key.
- Press the 'm' key.
- Press the 't' key.
- Select the console output and send it to support@daysofwonder.com. If you can't select the console output, just try to find the javalog.txt file which might be in c:\windows\java or similar.
Thanks for your help !
Happy game !

Hello everyone:
Starting today, you can enjoy a new version of our Gang of Four web site, faturing:
An easy-to-use navigation bar on the left, just like in the Days of Wonder and the Pirate's Cove web sites
New pages with lots of content: more information about the on-line game, details about the ranking system, probabilities in combinations for the mathematically inclined players, and more
Have fun,
The Gang team at Days of Wonder
PS: if your navigation bar shows ugly blue links and texts, then reload the page to tell your browser to load the new styles.

What's up with the Ranking?
|
Fri, 28 November 2003 23:29

|
 |
You might have noticed recently something strange with the Ranking: you moved up significantly, some players disappeared, or you disappeared.
What's up with the Ranking?
There is nothing wrong. This is simply the growing effect of a new feature that was implemented 15 days ago:
If you do not play during 15 days, you are removed from the ranking. Nevertheless, you keep your ranking score. You are simply "inactive". Just play one game, and you will appear again on the ranking board.
This feature had been requested by many players, who found unfair that some high-ranking players would stop playing just to stay up in the charts without participating anymore.
So there is going to be an interesting fight now! There are new hot spots to take!
Have fun,
Yann

I had the weirdest bug right now:
In the game against vlan-zomba-ptite' (the one vlan one) we each had 2 to 5 cards left at one time. vlan plays a card, and all of a sudden i get the screen: vlan wins. But even there it said that valn got one point for his one card. But then in the next hand he had still 0 points (and i think, the other points hadn't changed either, but i'm not sure).
so this whole hand didn't count???

i'm trying to find another version of the card game. it had pictures of privates, generals, etc on the cards. it actually makes more sense to do it this way because the game is actually based off of the millitary and such. this will be hard to find unless you actually have the old version and tell me the manufactor's name or the website to the place i can buy it. and no i'm not talking about edition 1. days of wonder didn't make it. it was before they had the rights to make a new design for the game.

Enhancing the program !
|

Hi there
i m not sure it s the right place to make this kind of demand but i ll post it anyway !
I was wondering if it would be possible to slightly reprogramm the game, in order for it to emit a small sound or bip or dring dring when a game starts !
It should be simple to do i guess !
I ask that because there are often people that wait several minutes for a game to start because there is none 4th player yet, so they do something else while waiting and then they don t notice when the game finally starts, resulting in more and more waiting for the other players, and sometimes in a game against unwanted bots !
So if the game could emit a small sound when a game starts, these situations could be avoided by simply reminding everybody they were waiting for a game
Thanks for what you can do.
And sorry for my bad english, i just never learned how to wright it
Sylk

DRAGON CUP
GOF Team Cup from november the 24th to december the 18th 2009
1- Organization and progress of the tournament
16 teams made up by at least 4 to at most 6 players will be distributed between 4 groups (A, B, C and D) by drawing.
First and second of each group will be qualified for semi finals.
Qualifying matches will take place on the first two weeks (from 24/11 to 04/12)
Teams of each group will meet 4 evenings per week :
On Tuesday at 20h30
On Wednesday at 20h30
On Thursday at 20h30
On Friday at 22h30
Each evening, players will play 3 games.
Semi Finals will take place between the 8th and the 11th of december.
Qualified teams will be distributed as follows :
Semi-final 1 Semi-final 2
1st group A 2nd group A
2nd group B 1st group B
1st group C 2nd group C
2nd group D 1st group D
Cup Final will take place between the 15th and the 18th of december.
The first and second of each semi final will be qualified to the Final.
2- Ranking :
1st 7 points
2nd 4 points
3rd 2 points
4th 1 point
3- Rules
Inscriptions for the cup will open on september the 1st and will close on the 15th of november.
Each team will be led by a captain who will communicate to technical direction the list of the players composing his team.
The list of players and their plays' schedules must be sent fast (before the monday's night of each tournament's weeks)
Games will be opened by a different team each day following the order of the group's drawning
team 1 on tuesday,
team 2 on wednesday,
team 3 on thursday,
team 4 on friday.
All games will be watchable by all but cards can be hidden.
It will be the best ranked player's option to show the cards or not.
Each player will only play once a week.
Only teams with more than 4 players will be allowed a substitution of player in case of absence of the planned player.
If a player is missing at the time scheduled, he will be replace after 30 minutes by a real player or a bot.
If a bot is substitute, his team will get the points won by it but for each game with a bot the team will lose two points (no matter the result of the bot).
If a player leaves a game, others should do their best to wait for his return so the game won't be distorted.
Any contender of the tournament shall prove fairness, respect and tolerance to others players whatever their tactical points of view might be.
So we can enjoy the cup and not fill the lobby nor the forums too much, it is asked to players to send Private Messages if they can't hold what they need to say.
Any improper behaviour affecting the good progress of the tournament will be punished.
Looking to the seriousness of the fault, penalties will be given : points can be cancelled, a player can be removed and eventually a whole team can be removed.
Enjoy the Dragon Cup !

Strategy for 3 vs. 1: Laggards vs. Leader
|
Tue, 10 January 2012 17:44
|
 |
What is 3 v 1?
When three losing players must rally against a clear leader in the game. The object of this scenario is to prevent or minimize the leader's chance to play his weak cards. Losing players must be highly cooperative for this strategy to work. Keeping control among the three losing players will ensure the leader will be left with more, if not, the most cards at the end of each round.
Be Aware of the Direction of Play in Each Round
Most players adopt a "weak to strong hand" style of play. Therefore, starting hands are usually weak hands, so make sure the leader is fourth at the start of each round. Ideally, rounds should start adjacently and directed away from the leader, forcing her to play against a stronger, rather than weaker hand. Losing players should defer winning the round to either of the players adjacent to the leader, so that subsequent hands start in the way described herein.
Play a Strong or Small Hand, Against the Leader
This is especially effective when the leader is second to play at the start of the round. If you don't have a strong 5 card hand, start the round with a small hand, like a single or pair. This minimizes how many cards the leader can play. Take note that often the leader will force his GOF early in order to take control of the game.
Losing Player Should Not Pass
If you are nearest to losing the game, passing is prohibitive in this strategy. Remember, there are two other players helping you stay in the game. The goal of the laggard is to get down to 7 or less cards in the round.
7 or Less Cards to the Laggard, 7 or More Cards to the Leader
Laggards can use this number as a guiding rule to playing or passing. This is the ideal configuration at the end of each round.
Know When to Take Control and When to Give it Up
This is not easy to do but hopefully your intuition will tell you know when to take control and when to pass it on to another player.
Play your Cards
This is self-explanatory, but cooperation means you must play your cards as often as you can. Your fellow laggards are not mind readers, but they can count what cards have played, so do your best to play your cards.
If done properly, this strategy is needed only for a couple of rounds if that, or until all of players are more or less on even playing ground. One player might first announce a "3v1" on chat before commencing.
Hopefully this posts translates well in other languages. Thanks!
