Congrats DoW on Origin's Award Nomination! Thu, 13 May 2004 00:28
Pirate's Cove has been nominated for best Graphic Design of a Board Game or Expansion!

This is just another kudo to the production values that make Days of Wonder games the benchmark for the board game industry.

Good Luck and thanks for taking such pride in your product.

Cheers,

Daniel Stahl

  Strategy and tactics ?! Wed, 25 August 2004 10:54
Well seems like the rules have been fairly well ironed out.
So now how about some cunning plans. Twisted Evil

A few of these have been mentioned elsewhere but it'd be nice to have a one stop thread.

So I guess I'll start the cannon ball rolling.

1. *The Drunken Master* strategy.
part 1. At first be completely random. Don't try to go anywhere useful unless per chance you do.

Since in the first round it is difficult to predict others actions simply go anywhere there isn't an impossibly tough pirate. This way the other players will find it less possible to guess what you're up to in the following rounds because in fact even you don't know.

part 2. Next - go where the fame lies. the best combination of treasure and infamy. Forget tooling up your ship. That'll come incidentally. Remember to visit the tavern as often as possible and if all else fails the pub at pirate's cove is also excellent.

2. *To the Pain* Now this is a nasty tactic Shocked and no doubt common. The pirate who, rather than putting a weaker pirate out of their misery, uses their superior firepower to whittle away at their enemies other advantages.

Luck really can be a factor in battles and I've seen much weaker boats whittle away a strong boats defenses. This tactic makes some opponents less likely to hang around and try their luck.

Well that's it for now. I await your replies.

Royal Navy and Legendary Pirates Fri, 08 July 2005 05:01
Tonight in a game of Pirates Cove, the player in second place decided to challenge the Legendary Pirate on the last turn of the game. They sailed to the island where the LP was currently Moored. After Navigation, the Royal Navy was tipped off to their location.... Now, for game purposes, are the Player and Legendary Pirate required to go after the Navy first? If defeated, does the Player get Fame for this?

Gaming Issues with Royal Navy and Legendary Pirates moored together. Sat, 23 July 2005 10:53
When you play a three player game, two pirates are deployed in the game, otherwise it would be a boring game. However certain unique conditions arise?

How do you resolve having 2 pirates together? I just read in the rules that they do not fight each other. If they are placed together, people would be afraid of even attempting to attack the Legendary Pirates.

Can the Royal Navy get sent to destroy a Legendary Pirate using a privateering card? I guess this is possible if you state it at the beginning of the game.

Once the battle is completed with the Royal Navy, why does it get taken off the board. Should it not be reshuffled with all existing pirates who have not shown their faces? I had an instance where I had two Privateering cards and I couldn't play them because the Royal Navy showed their face early on in the game was not on the board by the time I got them.

Can you go to the location of the Royal Navy and do battle with it, but when there are two bucaneers, who does the Royal Navy shoot at?

************************

Ok, never mind. - I figured it out. It is small print on the first page that you would never figure it out, unless you read it a few times over. The Royal Navy does not get deployed the same as a pirate. The Royal Navy is a separate matter. I guess it should have been stated again in the Royal Navy Section and the back of the card b/w like Zug um Zug [Ticket to Ride] Longest Continuous Section. Small details - otherwise a superb game.

New Blank Card Ideas. Sat, 23 July 2005 12:01
Battle Card:

Hull freezes over
Technological advances have allowed you to freeze your hull. Your hull regains 1 hull strength per round up to your current hull strength. At the end of battle, lose 2 hull strength.

Event Card:

Island Savages (Island Pirates)
Played: During Plunder Phase (this is why you should play Plunder and Upgrade separately when sometimes it is played together)
Island Savages have sabatoged your attempt to plunder. Plunder stays on Island until plundered. (leave treasure card beside new upturned treasure cards)

Oh, this was a fun card. We had a blast. This is what happened.
We played a 4 player with 2 pirates game. All island treasure cards were mostly poor. The islands that were occupied with pirates had the largest spoils and no one wanted to go there. There was only one island that was open with a large booty. All 4 of us had to battle. The battle was brilliant. In the end, of course, one was left standing. However, one person had this card, and was crippled in battle. So he decided to play this card. (Mind you if he won, he would have taken the booty for himself). Anyways, it make for some interesting strategy.

I bought the most fantastic Gold Metal Doubloon Coins reps of the real thing. thay make a great sound wile playing on the game board. I use them in place of the cardboard "Coins" that came with the game, a bit nicer touch. I also got tiny treasure chests to keep them in. 12 for 1.95 The store has a great "eye patch and gold earing set" for just .99 cents! Everything you can think of even pirate toilet paper! party accressories galore. It is the largets that i've seen on the net. RUN don't walk to this great site:

Blind Pew was the evil and sinister pirate who was blinded in a pirate attack. He is cruel, scary, slippery and determined to get the map of Treasure Island. He gives Billy Bones the Black Spot, which features in my next card suggestion.

If you get Blind Pew as a Tavern card, you can chose to swap (blindly) up to two of your tavern cards with another player of your choice.

This Tavern Card enables you to attempt to kidnap an opponent's parrot.

To do so you roll a die:

1-3 means you take his parrot alive
4-5 means you fail and lose 2 fame points for the infamy of attacking an honourable parrot
6 means you fail, but kill the parrot. You lose 3 fame point for the shame this brings you.

I bought via internet Piraten Bucht(by DoW). The price was right and i fell into it. At that moment i wasn't thinking Embarassed
The problem is i can't speak German. So i don't understand the cards. Is there a translation for those cards? I checked BGG but the translations were for the original german game only.
Or can i buy english cards somewhere?

Unfortunatelly I lost one treasure card - I have now only 59 instead of 60.

But obviously I don't know which one I lost.

Can someone be so kind and send me list of these cars for DOW edition?
List in following form would be nice:
1 2 5 0
0 5 5 0
1 6 3 0
1 4 4 0
0 2 5 1
3 2 2 0
3 5 0 0
3 1 1 1
2 8 0 0
4 2 0 0
etc.

Thanks

Here is my request...and it should be easy to make.

An official sixth player expansion set for Pirates Cove, so you don't have to make your own.
Obviously it would come with a different colour ship, player mat, rings, etc. as well as a few extras like additional upgrade cards, etc. Perhaps even a few new rules for new ideas like sea monsters, weather, etc.
How about it, in keeping with the new Pirates movie coming out soon and all! Very Happy

Yet another question.. Sat, 06 January 2007 02:55
Someone has Long John Silver's Parrot to allow them to always fire 6 cannons. Another player ends up having to battle them. If that player plays Grapple Attack on the pirate with Long John's Parrot, do they roll for their crew or do they still roll 6 dice? (seems obvious to me, but there is a HUGE debate nearly ruining the game right now)

Thanks again in advance...

Nevermind, its in the rules that Long John's supercedes the grapple attack. I REALLY disaggree with this but it doesn't matter. This was the one way to try to lessen that dang parrot's dominance...

I have a weekly game night which a bunch of friends and I recently just purchased Pirate's cove to add to our game night collection. On average we have between 10-15 players each week. I was wondering if there were any others who have had a large epic edition of Pirate's Cove with this many players who might have some rules they could share with me. Any advice on how to have a 15 player game of Pirate's cove would be great. Thank you for your time.

If you are playing a 3 or 4 player game, deal one [1] parrot to each player. Then [A] discard the parrot card left Twisted Evil or [B] shuffle the card into the tavern deck (3 player game).
If a 5 player game, the player who does not receive a parrot, may pull [2] tavern cards, his choice before the game begins. He may pull [1] volley and [1] battle card only.] Laughing

The Parrot's are only hit if your opponent rolls [2] ones.
[1] [1]= parrot wounded. same volley Confused
The parrot is killed if [2] ones are rolled on another volley same battle. Crying or Very Sad If killed [A] discard the parrot card from game or [B] send it to the discard pile.

Yesterday we experimented with pirates, because we had six players. One was playing the black pirate. To make interaction more often we decided that the black pirate is a very mysterious one and pops up unexpectedly (like pirates do) by the throw of a dice at the end when all other players have chosen their islands. A review after the game if we should stick to the old rule (pirate goes from island 1 to 2 to 3 etc) or the random rule, all were in favor of the new rule. Gives the navigation card also more value where you can choose the players to state to which Island they are going, and choose the black pirate to state it first.

I have been reading looking for 2 player versions of the game. The only 2 I have found are to have both players play 2 ships, or to have each player take 1 1/2 turns.

I have come up with 3 other options. But have not had time to fully test them. Please play test, and tell me how they work out.

Golden Age of Piracy! - The purple ship can be used as a third pirate. Pirates begin on Islands 1, 3 and 5. Move as normal.

Rogue Pirate! - Again, use the purple ship as a third pirate. When you draw for this ship, re-draw if you pull the cacafeugo. Start the black ships on islands 1 and 4. The Purple ship moves at random each round per a roll on a D6 *AFTER THE NAVIGATION ROUND*. This pirate will not attack the other pirates if they end up on the same island. If the Rogue pirate and a normal pirate end up on the same island with a player, resolve the combat with the pirate first, then the rogue moves in for the kill. (The basic idea is to simulate a 3rd player in the game.)

Small World! - only use 1 pirate. Islands 4 and 5 are ignored. Upgrade crew on sail island, upgrade cannons on hull island. You can only upgrade 1 aspect of your ship per visit. So you can upgrade Sails by 3 points, but could not upgrade sails by 2 and crew by 1 in the same visit.

Come aboard and sail away to Pirate's Cove... the legendary hideaway of thieving pirates and cutthroat buccaneers. The tales of those legendary pirates of old who've fought and survived these mysterious waters still haunt all those who yearn for a life at sea.

http://blog.daysofwonder.com/wp-content/dow-uploads/2012/08/pirate-box-en.jpg

Out of print for some time, the perennial Days of Wonder favorite, Pirate's Cove makes its return to game stores in North America this coming September 19 - appropriately enough on International Talk Like a Pirate Day and a little earlier in Europe (late August).

http://blog.daysofwonder.com/wp-content/dow-uploads/2012/08/pirats.jpg

Originally released in 2003, in Pirate's Cove you'll battle for the rights to plunder the riches of the sea and become the most famed and feared Pirate the world has ever seen. So plan your own Pirate Party for September 19th when Pirate's Cove returns to game stores worldwide. For more information visit the Pirate's Cove website.

I was wondering how you could be caught in the act searching someone's cell when only one (!) person is allowed in the cells.

The English rule is clear - but this is missing in the German rule altogether: Only the owner of the cell is allowed in in order to catch someone else in the act!

Quite bad rule omission, didn't check for other mistakes yet. Actually this posting should be on the German discussion forum, but nobody seems to go there - so maybe some Germans read it here, unless they know already.

... and got only one blank card, sniff, so this is the second Mystery of the Abbey: Who stole my second blank card? Very Happy

The spirit of Brother Adelmo (star)
Use this card when you are in your cellula.
"The spirit of Brother Adelmo visits you in prayer. He tells you the name of his closest friend in the abbey. This person is certainly innocent."
Roll one of the monk dice and pick a random card of that player. If the dice points you out or a player with no cards, roll again.

In hiding
"Terrified for another murder, a monk goes in hiding."
Hide a monk from your hand in a room by noting the room on a paper and putting his card and the paper aside. If a player enters that room, you have to show the card to that player. From that point on, all players know where the monk is hiding, but the monk remains there for the rest of the game.

A small lie (star)
This card allows you one lie when asked a question. You may use this card only once, and reveal it only at the end of the game, or when another card forces you to reveal it.

The eye of God
Pick an empty room. Each player that ends his turn in that room must show all his suspect cards to you. This effect remains active untill the next mass. (Mark that room with a coin).

My daughter got MoA for a Christmas present. We have one case in the books and we had a good time. We will, like everyone else, need to work on our questioning. We tended to ask very revealing questions, but as a start it wasn't bad. We seemed to all figure out who it was at about the same time so we had a mad rush to make an accusation. My daughter got there first with the use of a Crypta card. She had made one wrong revelation and I had made two correct revelations so I won by one point.

The cards make it fun. We will probably go with the variant of moving up to three spaces per turn next time. We really enjoyed the game.

Thank you,
Scott
