Just to make you mouths water... )
I received my copy yesterday and it was well worth the waiting.
Enjoy for yourself.
Has one little misprint on two cards, but that's absolutely harmless.

It would be nice to know it the amount of pre-orders so far has exceeded or met Richard Borgs and the DoW teams expectations?
I would imagine that they exceeded your expectations seeing as you ran out of english copies in europe so early.
I'm looking forward to many years of support for this system.

Hi,
I have the game for some days now and it plays very fine.
Like my other war miniatures I sticked some magnetic-tape under the fugures so I can transport them easily.
Now I want to try to paint them, finding a mix between speed and detail .
Does anyone have some link to a website where I can find color schemes for the Britis and French medieval troops?
greetz,

Session Report - Agincourt Solo Game
|
Wed, 06 December 2006 17:38

This afternoon it was with eager anticipation that I set out the figs for my first BL game. This was played solo to allow me to take as much time as I needed and to accommodate any interruptions!
Turn 1
As per the adventure instructions the English get to go first. They only had tactics cards so a 'Mounted Charge' was used to order left flank archers to fire at the French cavalry 1 hit and a retreat, nice shooting boys. 'Forward' card drawn, could be useful later
French also use a 'Mounted Charge' on their left wing to move the cavalry towards the English bowmen. Also moved R/W cavalry 3 hexes. On the French left the cavalry inflicted 1 hit on the English and forced a retreat (would have been 2 but for the support). The pursuit and bonus attack caused another hit. 'Surround' card drawn, should come in handy.
Turn 2
'Forward' card played by the English to enable some massed bowfire. Great shooting with the L/W archers killing remaining 2 elements of red banner French cavalry - first banner obtained by the English On the English right another 2 elements of red banner cavalry are taken out. 'Green Banners' card drawn looks like the sky will be black with arrows very soon.
The French use a 'Surround' card to advance their R/W infantry and their L/W heavy cavalry to attack the English invaders. One element of archers is killed and the remainder in the unit are very isolated. 'Patrol' card drawn.
Turn 3
As expected the English play 'Green Banners', bit of a no brainer there...
On the English right the French cavalry are forced back by the mass of arrows and on the left the last heavy cavalry element bites the dust of the French countryside - 2nd Banner to the English. 'Advance ' card drawn
The French are 2 banners down and nee to do something fast, those impetuous cavalry have paid the price for charging in without support. 'Patrol' card played to send forward the infantry and sole bow unit in the centre. 'Red Banner card drawn, bit late me thinks...
Turn 4
'Advance' is played so L/W English archers can fire, they aim at the French bowmen and...............miss. 'Surround' card is drawn.
'Leadership' used on French archers for the +1 die, one English archer is hit. 'Forward' drawn, at last the army can soon move forward and destroy these English vagabonds.
Turn 5
'Surround' is used to allow for bowfire from both flanks. On the English right a French blue banner cavalry unit takes 2 hits. 'Attack' R/W is drawn.
As expected 'Forward' is used, the French advance in the centre and on the right. The card is also used to retreat the one element cavalry unit out of bow range. The French archer unit fires and misses. 'Attack' card drawn.
Turn 6
The English use 'Counterattack' to mimic the French 'Forward' card. This allows mass bowfire from the left and centre. The French archers take a hit and are forced to retreat. 'Patrol' card drawn.
'Red Banners' used by the French to advance an infantry unit in the centre. 'Scout' is drawn. Bit of a lull in the fighting as both sides draw breath and manoeuvre their troops.
Turn 7
'Patrol' used to allow the 2 archer units in the centre to fire retreating a French infantry unit. 'Attack' centre drawn.
'Patrol' played to move forward 2 infantry units in the centre to a hex away from the English line. 'Scout' R/W drawn
Turn 8
Another quiet turn with the English playing 'Attack' in the centre for more bow fire killing one element of French infantry. Another 'Counterattack' card is drawn.
'Scout' played by the French to allow the French infantry to close with the pesky English bowmen, (ready to cut bow fingers off). Two elements of archers are disposed of but the unit holds; all fingers still accounted for
'Advance' L/W card drawn.
Turn 9
The second 'Counterattack' card played by the English allowing their L/W bowmen to fire and what shooting it is - 2 elements dead. 'Battlelore' card taken.
The French use 'Leadership', another R/W French infantry unit closes with the English. First attack goes in on some English archers, last 2 elements are killed (and fingers taken...). First Banner for the French. The infantry advance. Second attack goes in on English infantry using 4 dice ('Leadership' card effect), but only one element killed with the unit retreating; the French follow up their success. Is this the turning point in the battle? 'Advance' card drawn.
Turn 10
'Battlelore' played by the English but dice rolls are not that great with only 3 units able to be ordered this turn. (Deck is shuffled as per the BL card). Yet more bowfire resulting in a French bowmen unit going down to their bannerman, but the other archers miss....and the English red banner infantry wade in only hit once with their 4 dice. 'Mounted Charge' drawn LOL
For the French the 'Advance' used to push 4 units forward in the centre in an effort to rescue the day. French archery inflicts one hit on their English counterparts. 'Forward card drawn.
Turn 11
The sun is starting to go down as the English use a 'Mounted Charge' to allow the red banner infantry to attack again. No hits but a retreat with the English advancing into the vacated hex. 'Mounted Charge' drawn again - sigh.
This turn the French use a 'Forward' card. Two units in each section are ordered to attack before dusk arrives fully. The attacks go in resulting in the death of an archer element and the retreat of two other units, (not enough me thinks...) 'Surround' is drawn.
Turn 12
Both sides are frantic to end this now as the gloom descends. (Translation: the wife is due home any minute).
'Red Banners' played again to aloe the English heavy infantry to press home another attack and hopefully destroy another French unit. No contest as the 4 dice are rolled, two French infantry elements are killed and the 3rd banner falls to the English. The English Red Banner infantry hold in line. A ‘Green Banner’ card is drawn, looks like we will see the loosing of the last of the English stock of arrows!
In a desperate bid to save the day the French commander plays 'Surround' and the last French cavalry unit (1 element) charges into the enemy archers on the L/W destroying an archer bannerman, (2 banners to the French). On the French right the infantry advance toe to toe with their English counterparts, two elements are destroyed but crucially the bannerman lives on. 'Patrol' card drawn. Good turn for the French but too little too late perhaps.
Turn 13
Unlucky for some maybe?
'Foot Onslaught' is played to allow a group of two infantry units on the English L/W to close with the enemy. Can they finally destroy the last two elements of a French infantry unit to rout the French and win the battle?
First attack goes in and no effect.
Second attack goes in and blue helmets appear and the unit is destroyed, (4th banner to the English). The battle is won.
Conclusion
Really enjoyed the game despite it being a solo affair. The battle panned out quite historically, with the French knights having the potential to kill many units but able to be destroyed themselves when caught without support. (Due to my tactical ineptitude). As the French I found myself lured into short term tactical decisions when a quick kill looked to be on the cards: Leading to the early destruction of the French knights (Red Banner cavalry). As the English I was able to adopt a more strategic approach, probably as a result of being on the defence for much of the battle. It is all too easy to launch unwise attacks when that desirable card is drawn that you just must use there and then.
I did use the support and bonus attack rules, despite the advice in the adventure booklet. I'm glad I did as they do add a sense of the importance of linear formations and the ability of cavalry to bust a hole in an enemy formation. As I became familiar with the turn structure the game rattled along. I think the whole thing took about two hours including set up. I reckon next time will be below an hour for the same adventure.
Can't wait to move on to using goblins and dwarves, not forgetting spiders, of course. Above all the game is fun and comparing it to other fantasy/historical rule sets that I have used in the past, much, much, easier to get to grips with and play. I like to battle an opponent not the rules. Nice one DoW you have made a jaded miniatures player very happy..

Waiting to play with battlelore epic adventures, but since no new expansions will come out until next march 2007, I wonder if battlelore epic rules will be similar to memoir overload rules.
Need epic rules, scenario editor, campanig rules, more scenarios!!!

I received my first copy yesterday, and I received my second copy of BattleLore today.
Silentshadow is pleased. Want make big devastating war on guy with funny looking banners of same colors. Big two-board area large enough to smash foot soldiers and throw rocks. Darken the sky!!! Come closer so big rocks hit you when I throw them.
Days of Wonder rocks! I also qualified to order my second Earth Elemental today. So I did. I'll admit that I've managed to forget that other contemporary hex-based wargame by Hairbow or Hasblown or whoever called Heroscrape or Hexcrap or whatever. "You want me to spend $12 for one banner and some colored dice in a bag?" That's a little-known condition I like to refer to as "done, thanks." Apparently, I've officially begun the selected-purchasing stage of collecting that game.
Enter BattleLore ... BattleCry with wizards, Memoir '44 with spiders, C&CA with real figures. Awesome.... Did I mention how big the double board setup is? Me want make big battle as soon as I get all horses upright!

I just bought my copy today. I had it preordered through my retailer. I haven't even read the rules, but I've played Memoir and I have a general idea. Anyhoo, I have my Spider, and I have my Hill Giant. I also have figures and miniatures from other games... Has anyone thought of any house rules or have any ideas on different creatures? I do some playtesting for a local publisher so I get to thinking "what if" sometimes. What if I came up with a Vampire type creature and made it playable using what I know and what I will learn about creature rules. Would it have extra movement? All creatures are Bold at this point(correct me if I misread one ofthe other threads), and what kind of damage dice would it have? Let's assume a level 2 creature for now. No additional movement. Always Bold, 3 damage dice. Still retreats two hexes per flag but can pass through units(mist form) Ok, Abilities. Yes to bonus strikes and an ability that allows the vampire to charm enemy infantry to attack another unit for this turn. it's a start. oh and Werewolves was just there for a past tense pun

Ok, so after a couple games on my own and then getting my girlfriend to try it with me tonight (the selling line was, "honey, it's just about as easy as Candyland") , I'm still amazed at the playability of this game. I still have not played a game past the initial scenario and I'm still having so much fun (mind you, I will be getting past it, but i ran through a couple games of it to get the rules down and it'll be baby steps for the girlfriend). Every game is different no matter how many times you play the same scenario because of the command cards. Unfortunately for her, I wiped out her left flank early and she was playing the French. 3 out of 4 of her cards were left flank orders so she was basically improvising her strategy with whatever she drew every turn. But she still had a great time even though my English laid the smackdown on her Frenchies
Anyway, I have never played a DOW game previous, but I am so glad I was able to pick this one up. Nice work!

Picked the game up on Thursday at my LGS and have been enjoying it ever since! I had a really nice little surprise in that when I picked up the game my LGS also had the Earth Elemental for me as well as the Hill Giant. Super cool! Having played both BattleCry and the Memoir'44 series to death (and loving it) I already knew what to expect, to some degree anyway. The "lore/magic" element certainly adds an entirely new dimension to the game system. I have yet to see the "Fireball" spell go off though. My son tried to use it on me once, and I tried to cast it on him in another game, and both times the defender was holding the "Dispel Lore" card in their hand With the Christmas holidays fast approaching I am looking forward to getting some more games in. All-in-all very FUN! All I can say to D.o.W. is W.o.W. Bring on the expansions . . . . . N.o.W.

Dear DoW,
Nice work with the lore card compendium, very cool!
Could we be given the option to view the list of all lore cards (not just per class)? I'm not sure if this is easy to do, but it would be also nice to have maybe three or four columns shown: the card name, the card cost, the card's caster class, and the card casting phase - with the ability to sort on any of those four.
Thanks for your hard work on this, looking forward to seeing those expansions come out!

BUG - Map Editor Verification + Solution
|
Sat, 23 December 2006 03:03

|
 |
As already noted the map editor gives errors on maps that can be build. I couldnt resist looking into this problem and I made the same mistake as the developers of the tool did .
The problem is that they only count the number of same pictures for validation. This works wel as long as the sides of the terrain pieces are different but goes terribly wrong when they are the same. And this happens to be the case for 4 pieces: Both creature lairs and 2 generic Badges (with the lion on it).
There are (at least) two solutions, which are basically the same:
Solution 1, which follows the pair check of the tiles:
add a new "empty" tile to the editor that people cannot place, but is a valid tile for the editor.
And then make the verifications as follows:
Lairs:
Giant Rock Pile + [empty] = 1
EE Summon Circle + [empty] = 1
Victory Badges:
[lion] + [empty] = 6
[lion] + [spear] = 6
[lion] + [dwarf] = 6
[lion] + [goblin] = 6
Solution 2, which is the elegant solution equal to the first:
Use the restrictions in solution 1, but remove all pair-equations with an [empty]-tile in it.
The check isn't nescessary because that check equals the first verification check of the editor (do I exceed the number of this picture on the tiles.
And please don't take this too much as critisism: your way of checking is great, it just has this one flaw. And as a bored mathematics and computer science student I just couldn't resist solving the puzzle
Hope it helps,
Bart
P.S. I posted both solutions so you can follow my train of thoughts here, I didnt get the best (?) solution at once either.

I stared an English translation of the French Bannockburn scenario (120u), but once I saved my partially completed translation, I can no longer get access to the scenario from within the editor to finish the job.
I sent a private message to the scenario author explaining the situation/problem, but I'm hoping the tech staff at DoW can let me know what I need to do.
Thanks

I have formed a group to play Battlelore at Metro Seattle Gamers. The current plan is to meet on the last Saturday of every month, but that schedule may change depending on the schedules of people that wind up wanting to attend.
In any event, our first meeting is this coming Saturday, December 30th, at noon.
Information about Metro Seattle Gamers is located at http://www.dragonflight.org/msg/
Please note that there is a small fee for attending MSG, which is not in any way related to Battlelore in particular; it goes to pay the rent and utilities on the building. All the details like that are located at the website.
Hope to see some of you there!

Creating custom units

I wondered whether this question had come up before... There's a fair amount of custom units for Heroscape for sale on eBay. My understanding is that Hasbro is OK with this as long as they don't replicate any official product and the cards include some fixed text recognising Hasbro's copyright. Have DoW said whether they would allow anything similar?

Ideas for new cards
|
Wed, 03 January 2007 00:31

|

I feel that my command deck could use a little fattening. Which is why I'm toying with new command card texts...
"Issue an order to 1 unit per lost banner. Ordered units may ignore any battlebacks this turn. If no banner has been lost order 1 unit of your choice."
"Issue an order to 1 unit per captured banner. Ordered units may join with another friendly unit of same unit type provided that the figure count do not exceed 4 for infantry or 3 for cavalry. If no banner has been captured order 1 unit of your choice."
"Issue an order to 1 blue banner unit per lost blue banner. Ordered units may move 2 and battle +1d. If no blue banner has been lost order 1 unit of your choice."
"Title: Full Retreat!
If you have lost 3 or more banners you may order any unit adjacent to an enemy unit to move one additional hex but not battle."
"If you have a lone friendly unit in any section you may order this unit twice this turn."
How about this for a new cleric lore card...
"Title: Conversion
Cost X lore
Choose 1 troop unit. For each X - 3 lore spent roll 1 die. Full strength units are converted to your side by rolling at least 2 lore. Non-full strength units only require 1 lore rolled."
Have any of you thought about addintional command card texts? If so, what are your best suggestions

Has anyone made any printable blue archer banners yet?
They'd be handy in my "Elf homeland" campaign (playstested, check it out )
At the moment I just have +1 die for archers, because otherwise it results in confusion. But it would be good to get blue banners that I can print out and temporarily blue-tac to green archer banners.

Could it incorporate the little lore token-sized council member discs?
Thanks for listening,

PDF version of FAQ?

I was wondering if DoW would consider making a printable FAQ. Since this is a boardgame and a computer isn't always handy it would be nice to have a printout to carry in the box. The card and creature websites are great but they don't work well for printing.

Read in a different forum about people being interested in decals for shields. I have a few 15mm DBM armies which I use decals extensively. I get mine from here

Slow response to questions on Creature Compendium

Eric and company,
Response to questions posted on the Creature Compendium have been uncharacteristically slow. It's a great idea to have such a compendium to collect all related questions and clarifications in one place, but replies seem to be much slower in coming in the compendium versus the general forum. I fear this will discourage posts to the compendium, where they belong.
Respectfully submitted,
Lou

I've taken some pictures about what we meet day by day, i've enclosed those to your attention :

Trying my hand at the editor

Hey guys,
I just created my first adventure and play tested it a few times. It is called "Master of the Joust" 1030u. I play tested it a few times and it seems to work with or without lore. It also was very balanced from what I have played.
I enjoy the custom war councils and also battling on rough terrain, but wanted to keep it as close to "official" scenarios. Any input would be great.

Hero Rules

The Hero rules threads tailed off over the last month since we were expecting an announcement on official hero rules. Looks like the expansions are going in other directions for the time being though. Unless Eric and DoW are holding back on something?
I have an old copy of Age of Mythology from Eagles Games laying around. The game was pretty mediocre, but it's packed full of nice usable bits for use in Battlelore homebrew expansions!
Let's see what we have...
... Little wooden cubes. They happen to be red, green, and blue! Also brown and yellow ones. Good for markers maybe.
... TONS of minis on the scale of Battlelore. They happen to be green, blue, and brown (close enough to red!). There humans with various weapons, enough to make about four full 4-man Battlelore units of each type of unit.
- Chariot archers
- Spearmen
- Axemen
- Berzerker looking guys
- Mounted axemen
- Mounted swordsmen
- Elephant cavalry (!)
- Conscripts (unarmored men)
There are lots of hero units... including priests and dudes in really heavy armor that look sweet.
Monsters! Among other things....
- Cyclops
- Scorpion man
- Phoenix
- Hydra
- Dragons (not huge ones)
- Trolls
- Sphinx
- A winged serpent
- Frost Giant (about 80% the size of the BL hill giant)
- Valkyries (or mounted spearmen if you will)
- Dwarves with hatchets
- Medusa
- Manticore
- Minotaur
- Centaurs with bows
All of these things are on the same exact scale as Battlelore and are made out of the same plastic. I recommend checking it out if you're interested in this sort of thing. I may get to work on hero/monster rules and toss them out there for folks to eyeball...
