Plus facile encore pour les Russes (5 cartes contre 4 pour les allemands). 1-0 direct avec 202, ses chars sont éclatés, je me pose sur la colline et je bloque son train avec mon avion dès le 1er tour. Mes chars sont vite descendus de la butte 1-1. Je gagne 3-1 sur action héroique (1 à gauche et 1 droite sur colline). 4-1 en détruisant l'unité de choc à gauche.
Les renforts allemands arrivent. Ca repousse au centre 4-2. 5-2 sur la collines avec mes chars. puis 6-2 sur tout au centre colline centre droite.

Game # 2 of a match which I lose 7 to 9. My best cards are a RIGHT ALL and a 1-1-1. I do have AMBUSH and have draw the Air Power card. Not great. After about 4 turns I have killed off the panzer but the Ger Inf have unloaded off the train. That is a bit more than I could do as the Russians. My plane did fly in the early game and helped kill off the panzer but then I pulled it off the board. I then planed on trying to kill off one of those Inf that could not retreat but my dice did not help me out here. A Ger INF ASSAULT tried to take out my tank on the hill but my AMBUSH rolled 2 flags against one of the attackers. I got my act together and forged a 4 to 1 lead. But then Stevens killed off a 1 fig tank to make it 4 to 2. My BARRAGE finished off a boardedge 2 fig Inf and got me to 5 to 2. I then went 0 for 5 on an Inf and then Stevens killed off a tank w/ but 3 rolls to make it a 5 to 3 game – yikes. Luckily I had a CENTER ALL to play and could fire 5 units. I only needed 6 shots vs a boardedge Inf to finish off the tough (in this game) Russians.

I start w/ 3 left cards and the 2-0-2. Nothing for the key center.
The powerful 2-2-2 card is played by the Russians to start things off with. Three tanks, two Inf and a plane (brought on into the center) are ordered. The Plane misses my arty and only my PG Inf is dinged.
I play my 2-0-2 card and decide to withdraw my right sandbagged Inf to the fords. I also order the train and my tank. I now have a 2d AC setup on the Russian plane for next turn. My tank moves to fire at range on a Russian Inf w/ no retreat path and gets 2 hits. But within a few turns I am in trouble (even though the Russian plane is removed) as my 2 fig tank is killed off and I have a 1 fig and 2 fig Inf near the front. I have no way to order my train to get to the station and unload its Inf – no center cards.
The turn before I had the misfortune of rolling a flag vs a tank which lost me a followup 3 shots attack on that unit. I play my R 3 card and order my Inf to attack a tank on a hill with no retreat. This is I really could have used my lost tank. I miss my first shot, then my adjacent Inf is Ambushed and hit twice. It can still attack and gets 2 hits on the tank , but not good enough and now another of my Inf is down to 1 fig.
I finally draw a C card but is a 1. Now a Right All orders 7 Russian units. Nine shots from the three tanks kills off my 1 fig Inf and another Inf – that is the last of my left flank – half of my cards are for that flank too. Now I trail 0 to 3.
I try to pick off the 1 fig tank with my center arty but miss. I draw INF ASSAULT and RIGHT ALL – I keep the INF ASSAULT. A Russian BEL kills off my 2 fig Inf near Yelnya and then occupies the train station, so even if I could order my train, I could not unload. The steady stream of good Russian cards along w/ my bad ones has tilted the game badly for me.
I must take some risks here and order one Inf to attack a tank on my right while my 1 fig Inf tries to attack the Inf in the train station. I get 2 hits on the tank and one on the Inf and draw a 1-1-1 card. Too little too late. A Russian MOVE OUT kills off my 1 fig Inf and now there are 2 Russian Inf that can move into Yelnya the next turn for the win. There is not thing one I can do about it either. A last stab at glory and a possible 2 medals – 3 shots vs 1 1 fig tank miss and now my arty will fire on the Inf in the train station. The ironic part here is that is I roll a flag, Stevens will win by retreating into Yelnya – a damned if I do, damned if I don’t choice. My arty comes through this time and kills off the Inf but it does not matter as Yelyna falls on the next turn anyway. A 1 to 6 thrashing. With a tad more luck, this could have been a 3 to 6 game. The use of the Air Rules does tilt the balance more into the Soviet favor, so probably should not be used.

Played against the combined military genius of my daughter and partner, and lost. The Russians had it tough under the old briefing. Too tough. So I changed it to Russians getting 5 cards and Germans 4. This scans better historically too, since the German rear was choked with troops and partisans of the battle of the Smolensk pocket, and they were very short of supplies and ammunition.
