Second phase center branch in grand campaign.
Allied didn't have a single center card for the duration of the battle, nor any tactic cards.
Was satisfied to get 3 medals. Have to use Gates of Moscow to minimise campaign branch defeat.

The best card I held all game long was a DHQ. Most were 1s and 2s. Meanwhile, Dave played a number of cards (2-2-2, INF ASSAULT among them) that helped him exit 4 Infantry units off the board to earn 2 medals.
I killed off one Inf on my left but lost a tank in the bargain.
The German Inf in Yelnya was reduced to 1 fig but moved to relative safety via the play of the INF ASSAULT card and shielded by the PG Inf.
I had more success on my right. I plinked away at the Inf on the hill. After Dave moved his two Inf on his left (the two closest to his board edge), I played my AS card and interdicted those two units along w/ a panzer. This prevented the Infantry from leaving the board. I used my plane on my next turn to interdict one of the Inf again along w/ both panzers (one had moved onto the tracks).
My tanks then blasted on panzer off the board. The game was touch and go as Dave then exited off the two Inf after I let my plane go unordered. I hit the other panzer and forced the arty back.
I then swung a 2 fig tank around to kill off a 1 fig Inf. Dave then played TFH and exited off two more Inf. This made the game 4 to 3. But then Dave failed to kill off my cutoff 2 fig tank w/ 8 shots. This tank then recovered 1 fig and moved back along the base line to finish off the 1 fig arty on the board edge. I now had a 5 to 4 lead. Not only that, I had BEL under my chip, so if Dave did not kill off 2 units (which he probably could not do), the game was all but mine. Well, Dave played a CENTER 3 and got but 1 hit on his first 6 shots against my cutoff tank. But his last two shots from his did the job and killed off that unit. That tank accounted for 3 medals - 1 Inf, 1 panzer and the arty. He also took 22 shots to kill him off - a true hero of the Soviet Union. On my next turn, I played BEL and marched one of my center Infantry into Yelnya for the win. One interesting thing is, that was the only Soviet Inf to move during the entire game. My armor had done all the fighting in this battle.

There should be some sort of limit on the number of Armor Assaults and "Their Finest Hour" that a single person can play ;) but some days it goes your way and some days it does not. German victory points stemmed from fleeing from the carnage as fast as they could.

As the Germans, it seemed weird to be defending against a giant Russian horde, but the Germans were somehow able to hold out and come up with a win. The artillery lurking on the hill that counted as being in the center and flank were a valuable unit.

Much better for the Germans, and a lot of bad luck for the Soviets in this game. The Soviets need to be good at rotating units now, and the Germans need to be good at covering their retreating infantry units. Quite a dust-up!

This game was played with only the German artillery in the centre. The Germans couldn't cover any withdrawal and were overwhelmed. After this game, the two additional German artillery units were added.
