Historical Background:
Vierville Draw (D1) was the extreme western exit off Omaha beach. It was a very strong defensive position covered by 3 Widerstandsnesten. The task of clearing the draw fell to the 29th Infantry Division. The Duplex Drive Sherman's that made it ashore had to remain on the beach for some time due the the impassable terrain and the Anti-Tank obstacles. Whilst this made them vulnerable, they provided good fire support and protection for the hard pressed GI's. On the extreme right flank of the assault, C Company of the 2nd Ranger Battalion who's task was to make for Pointe de Percee by the over land route beached below WN73, and on its commanders own initiative abandoned his original mission and stayed in the fight to great effect.
