Historical Background:
On the 24th of August 1944, French General de Monsabert ordered to General Sudre to capture the hill of the famous basilica "Notre Dame de la Garde" (hill fortified with bunkers and called Fort Villars by the Germans). On the 25th of August, at 09h00 AM, the attack was launched by 1st company of 7th RTA from 3rd DIA and by a tank squadron of 2nd Cuirassiers Regiment (from 1st French Armored Division). At 01h00 PM, the sherman tank "Jeanne d'Arc" was destroyed by the fire of a 88mm antitank gun. The following tank "Jourdan" was immobilized by a minefield but continued to fight with its armament. Meanwhile, French infantrymen, guided by local Resistance, advanced towards the enemy, using a camouflaged stairway unknown by the Germans and reached the top of the hill near the German bunkers. At 03h00 PM, was the final assault against the bunkers, reduced with grenades and bayonets. Around 04h00 PM, a French flag flied on the top of the church tower. At this moment a big clamour arrived from the city : All people in Marseilles had seen the flag and knew that the beloved Basilica was liberated !
