Historical Background:
On the morning of November 14, 1965, US choppers appeared on the sky over the flat land below the Chu Pong Mountain. 1st Battalion of the 7th Cavalry arrived in the Ia Drang Valley, commanded by Lt. Col. Harold G. Moore. As the helis didn't have enough space on the ground to ship the whole battalion at once, they inserted one company after another. After first day's heavy fighting, the unit established a perimeter around Landing Zone X-Ray, where the HQ was located as well.

The next morning NVA units probed the left flank of the US force, eventually breaking through, while other companies were engaged by other NVA units. As they tried to exploit the breach, Broken Arrow code was radioed on the US side and reinforcements were flown in. The NVA slowly retreated and the American infantry sealed the breach.

They were relieved by the 2nd Battalions of the 5th and 7th Cavalry. The roughly 500 men force fought heroically.

The stage is set, the battle lines are drawn and you are in command. The rest is history.

The US HQ is a Temporary Medal Objective for the NVA Player.

The three beach hexes represent LZ X-Ray and they form a Temporary Majority Medal Objective for the NVA Player.

Special Rules:
Uncommon Valor is in effect. Uncommon Valor means that if a US unit is below 3 figures, they gain a plus 1 die bonus to their roll.

All NVA infantry units may move 2 and still battle, if they move next to a US unit (IJA Banzai War Cry rule).

Special Weapon Asset rules (SWAs 4 - Special Weapon Assets) are in effect for the US and NVA units equipped with Mortars (SWAs 6 - Mortar Late War) and the US and NVA units equipped with a Machine Gun (SWAs 7 - Machine Gun Late War). Place the proper badges on these units.

Place a battle star on the NVA Sniper unit (Troops 10 - Snipers).

Capture HQ/Supply Tent rules are in effect (Action 17 - Capture HQ/Supply).

The NVA unit on the left flank is a recon element (Nations 1 - French Resistance).

The US Player may heli-lift 2 infantry units on X-Ray when he has enough figures. These units may only land together there, when the LZ is in US hands and there are no NVA units on nearby hexes.
