Historical Background:
Situation: the D-Day landing sites and "bridgehead" were secure and build-up was underway via 2 prefab "mulberry" harbors. Meanwhile the Germans were still largely hunkered down expecting attack at the Pas de Calais. The main US strategic target was now the deep-water port of Cherbourg, expected to be in Allied control by D+30. To that end the 82nd Airborne Division and the 9th US Infantry Division were ordered to cut the Cotentin peninsula and isolate the city.

The two divisions took the bridges over the Douve at Saint-Sauveur-le-Vicomte and Sainte-Colombe under enemy fire. Then the Americans advanced toward Barneville and reached the sea on June 18th, isolating Cherbourg.
