Following the reconquest of Bessarabia, a former part of Romania which had been annexed by Stalin in 1940, the Romanian government of Ion Antonescu was urged by Hitler to advance troops beyond the Dniester River and occupy the important Black Sea port of Odessa. On 31 July 1941, Antonescu acquiesced, and after several weeks of fighting, Romanian forces had surrounded Odessa and laid siege to the heavily defended city. On 22 September 1941, much to the surprise of the unsuspecting Romanian high command, around 2000 men of the Soviet 3rd Marine Brigade landed behind the Romanian lines at Grigorievka and advanced inland. Their objective was to overrun the artillery positions in the Romanian rear area and stop the bombardment of Odessa.
