Historical Background:
In the earlier of September 1944, US soldiers of the 5th US Infantry Division, arriving near of the city of Metz, had to fight on a famous battlefield of the French-Prussian war of 1870, near the village of Gravelotte. German soldiers have prepared a defense line based on the old fortifications reinforced by numerous barbed wires, field bunkers and minefields. During a week, GI's of General Irwin tried to breakthrough this enemy line but unsuccessfully. On the 14th of September, the US command stopped the attack in this sector, the 5th US Infantry Division had lost half of its attack strength.
