Historical Background:
As a diversion for the Midway campaign in the Central Pacific, in the first week of June 1942 Japanese troops landed on the Aleutian islands of Kiska and Attu, conquering American soil for the first and only time in the war. After the victories of Midway and Guadalcanal, the United States planned an operation to retake the islands, beginning with the landing of the 7th Infantry Division on Attu in the spring of 1943. The landing on May 11 was virtually unopposed by the isolated Japanese garrison under Colonel Yasuyo Yamasaki, and soon US troops advancing from the two landing zones combined for an intended assault on the Japanese base of Chichagof Harbor. Faced with inevitable defeat, Yamasaki ordered a suicide charge for the night of May 29, hoping to reach the American supply base in Massacre Bay and inflict as much damage as possible. Pushing aside weak American outposts near Lake Cories, the Japanese overran two command posts and a field hospital at the mouth of Chichagof Valley. But, unknown to the attackers, elements of the 50th US Engineer Battalion were entrenched on high ground at the northern end of Massacre Valley, named by them Engineer Hill, blocking the way to the American supply depot. Failing in several desperate attempts to storm the hill and reach Massacre Valley, nearly 800 Japanese soldiers, including Yamasaki, were killed or committed ritual suicide, effectively ending the Battle of Attu.

The stage is set, the battle lines are drawn, and you are in command. The rest is history.
