Historical Background:
Ft Driant was one of the many pre-WWI forts around the cities of Metz and the towns around it. Ft Driant, or Feste Kronprinz, as the Germans called it, was near the town of Dornot. It was defended by the 8th SS Corps, commanded by General Herman Priess. The initial attack was made by the 20th Corps of Patton's Third Army on the 27th of September. The 20th Corps was commanded by Major General Walton Walker. The initial attack was fought off. A second attack was made on the 29th by engineers with bulldozers to fill in ditches, and long pipe bombs to blow holes in the wire. Company E attacking from the North, was immediately pinned down for the next four days and had to dig in. v
