Historical Background:
The battle of Strání was a part of the Brn?nsko-Bratislavská operace, one of the two large Soviet operations in the area of Protectorate Böhmen und Möhren. Soviet commanders chose Strání as a place of crossing the White Carpathians mountains, which would enable them to lead their armies up the stream of the Morava river to the north. As for the battle itself, the German 15th and 76th infantry divisions faced the 9th Romanian infantry division accompanied by Soviet forces. Romanian forces were ordered to move from Slovakia to the Protectorate borders just two days before the battle. In the meantime the Germans fortified their positions in the heavy terrain in the woody hills around the village Strání. The battle broke out on the 16th April with the Allied artillery bombardment to which the Germans responded by artillery counter-attack from Nivnice. The Germans held their positions for several days until the Allies managed to break through the front and advanced to the Protectorate area.
