Historical Background:
During Operation Cobra, the 4th Cavalry Squadron (part of 4th US Cavalry Group) was ordered to make a reconnaissance to the city of Villedieu-les-poêles, which was a strategic road junction. On the 31th of July several troops of the 4th Squadron entered in Villedieu and entrenched at the south edge of the town. For the Germans too, Villedieu had a strategic importance and a kampfgruppe counter-attacked i the afternoon with tanks and armored vehicles. Three times, the Germans attacked and three times they were repelled by the fire of light weapons, bazookas and anti-tanks guns of the US cavalry squadron. Villedieu stayed in American hands and the 4th Squadron received a military mention for its action in the city.
