Historical Background: The main German attack on the Allied defenders in the hills around Vevi hit on the morning of 12 of April. The battalion was able to hold for most of the day but the Germans were able to overcome the Greek and British Ranger units on the 2/8th's flank, making the position untenable. By the time the Australian commander ordered a withdrawal the unit was mostly surrounded and communications cut. Then before further withdrawal plans could be made the German tanks and infantry were able to penetrate the Australian defenses. The result was a rout, with the companies withdrawing piecemeal. The Australian casualties would have been higher however if it were not for the brave defenses by the 2/1st Anti-Tank regiment and the Royal Horse Artillery who stood their ground until the Germans were only 400 meters away.
