Historical Background:
Late May 1940, German motorized troops reached the English Channel, cutting off the Allied armies. 2nd Battalion, Royal Norfolk Regiment, was part of the rearguard who shielded the withdrawal of the British Expeditionary Force of Lord Gort towards Dunkirk. After the capture of Bethune, German SS Division "Totenkopf" advanced towards Estaires and the Lys river, suffering heavy losses by the Allied fire. The battle in the area of Lestrem - Le Paradis against the BEF rearguard ended by the massacre of 99 British prisoners of the Royal Norfolk Regiment, among which only two survived miraculously. This was one of the numerous war crimes of the SS Division "Totenkopf" in the Second World War.
