Historical Background:
Following the hazardous attack by the Germans to Mortain, Bradley and Montgomery decided to circle, as faster as possible, enemy divisions, recklessly advanced westward. The XVth American corps, which invested Le Mans on August 9, was ordered to go northward with, ahead, the 2nd Armored Division of General Leclerc. On August 12, this one go through Alençon before to rush toward Argentan and Ecouche. At the same time, Montgomery go back to the offensive at south of Caen. Canadians and polish General Maczek approach Falaise which falls on August 17. Germans are caught between two fronts with a single exit between Falaise and Argentan. Patton request the permission to close the pocket and to join the Canadians to Falaise, but Bradley feared "friendly fire"between the two fronts which were now face to face. He asked to Patton to stay at Argentan. A delay that will allow tens of thousands of German soldiers to get out of the pocket and to join the Seine river. In the only day of 17 August, nearly a third of the encircled Axis forces reached out of the cauldron.
The troops are in place. Have fun !
