Historical Background:
After the initial German attack they were still able to gain the ground up to the mine fields. The Germans then put pressure on the flanks of the initial defensive line but were did not gain much ground. Morshead, the Australian Commander, wanted the 2/48th battalion to counter-attack on the salient to relieve pressure on the south east of Hill 209. However, he did not give the 2/48th's commander, Windeyer, much time to prepare. Only two hours. As the Australians grouped up for the attack, they were exposed to German aircraft's strafing runs and shelling.
The 2/48th began their attack at 7:30 PM. They were behind schedule and the 2/23rd and the British Tanks had already begun their attacks at 6:30 PM and 5:00 PM respectively.
The Australian's had no idea of the enemy positions and sent out carrier patrols to draw enemy fire but these were repulsed by anti-tank fire before they could make proper reconnaissance. The 2/48th made progress in their advance but were soon under enemy crossfires. After being pinned down by enemy fire for most of the night and with no sing of the enemy fire slackening, they withdrew.
