Historical Background:
The town of Wau stood on the track between the Japanese bases in Lae and Salamaua. In March 1942 an Australian Guerrilla force, code named Kanga Force, operated along the track from Wau to Salamaua, harassing the Japanese. After the Japanese captured the village of Mubo, the Australians were forced to fall back to Wau.

The line remained static until January 1943 when after the Japanese lost the Kakoda track they, turned their attention to Wau, which was being reinforced, by air, with the Australian 17th Brigade.
The First contact was made on the 28th, and the Australians were forced to withdraw across the Bulolo River. Through the night the Austrlains withdrew to the town of Wau, intermixed with Japanese units moving in, yet with little firing as both sides were confused on the location of the enemy. One unit even drove through a Japanese ambush and the Japanese did not attack.
The Australians were forced to defend the town with units made up mostly of mechanics and cooks, with remnants of the Kanga force commandos and the remenatns of the 2/5 and 2/6th companies. The next morning the Japanese attacked the town and airfield. Australian Reinforcements flying in had to exit the planes and start firing on the enemy. On the 30th the Japanese launched a final attack on the town and airfield that was doggedly resisted. With their troops exhausted the Japanese soon fell back under the Aussie counter-attacks.
