Since 11 June 1940, the French troops retreating south, pursued by the German armies. In the night from 16 to 17 June, the French Tenth Army Corps crossed the Loire. The 12th Reconnaissance Group is back to Blois. Located on the south bank of the Loire, it is responsible for protecting access to Jacques Gabriel bridge.
On the morning of June 18, the Germans sent a reconnaissance on the north shore, on the other side of the bridge. After heavy exchanges of machine gun fire, a part of the bridge is then destroyed by the French.
The Germans are more numerous. Elements of the French Armored Division 4th DCR are sent as reinforcements to Blois. Supported by heavy artillery placed Villebarou, German forces increase pressure on the French troops by launching assaults to cross the Loire. Undergoing in return fire from French cannons located in St Gervais, the German infantry suffered heavy losses. Blois is in flames.
June 19, downstream of Blois, German units crossed the Loire using collapsible boats, facing the town Chailles. Intervention of heavy armored French repels once but the 12th Reconnaissance Group involved in the counter attack is weakened by the fighting. The Germans continued to cross the river, supported by their artillery. The situation becomes critical and French units must retreat into the forest of Russy before moving to Montrichard. German troops entered St Gervais at 15:00 while elements of genius install a temporary bridge on the bridge of Blois.
