Historical Background:
German advanced line "Reinhard" was set up on several steep hills (Monte Camino, Monte la Difensa, Monte Lungo) in front of the "Gustav" line, main German defense line south of Roma. While British soldiers of the 56th Infantry Division had to capture Monte Camino, the US soldiers had Monte la Difensa (hill 960) as objective. 1st Special Service Force was ordered to capture it by a "coup de main party". This special unit, specialized in the mountain combat, was composed with soldiers from USA and from Canada. In the night of the 02nd of December 1943, troops of the 2nd regiment of the 1st SSF began to climb the steep slopes of Monte la Difensa to arrive silently near the enemies positions. Revealed by a German flare fuse, they assaulted and captured quickly the German positions. Then the allied assault was stopped by the resistance of Monte la Ramatanea (hill 907). the battle lasted until the 09th of December 1943. After this "campaign of steep hills", the 1st SSF had suffered of more than 77 percent of losses.
