Historical Background:
Phase one had been a hard way to go, but with landings on each side of the Orote Peninsula and climbing up steep hills and cliffs, the Third Marines had been triumphant so far. Now an entrenched enemy in mountains and thick overgrown jungles awaited the Marines. General Takashina had been killed by machine gun fire as he left his command post, and General Obata has taken over the remaining Japanese forces on Guam. The Third Marines under the command of General Geiger did not know exactly where the Japanese were holding out. Air reconnaissance showed an unfinished road linking the coasts of Agana with Pago Bay. The plan was for the Third Marine to swing left along Agana and for the 77th Army Regiment to come up ten miles to cover the right flank. The First Marine Brigade would bring up the rear and protect the force from any Japanese that might come up from the south. General Obata decided that his forces were far too outnumbered to take the Marines on directly and Japanese forces moved north toward Mt Santa Rosa to the north, past Mount Barrigada. Tough terrain made it hard for the light tanks and the few Shermans the American forces had with them.
