[Los Negros] Defense of Momote Arirfield - February 29, 1944 - March 03, 1944

Historical Background:
The Admiralty Islands lie about 200 miles north of New Guinea. The third largest island in the group is the island of Los Negros. This island was considered important to General MacArthur saw this island as important for launching further attcks into the Pacific because it had an airfield. Allied intelligence stated that these islands were lightly defended and the Japanese were withdrawing. They were however defended by 4000 well equiped and motivated troops who would inflict many casualties on the invaders.

Operation Brewer (the codename for the operation) began on the 29th of February when the 1st Cavalry Division landed on Los Negros Island. By coming through the harbor they were able to surprise the Japanese defenders from the rear and so did not suffer heavy casualties upon landing. Heavy carpet bombing and naval bombardments helped out the US troops as tehy pushed inland. The US troops were able to capture up to the edge of the airfield in ground on the first day. On that night the Japanese attacked. The did not banzai charge as usual but walked into the fields singing and talking. Once they got to the foxholes however fierce, hand to hand fighting broke out. The Japanese were able to penetrate quite far, coming within shooting range of the operations CP. Fighting raged all through the night and the next day with attacks and counter attacks from both sides. The 40th Naval Construction Battalion and the 5th Cavalry landed during the battle and were immediately sent into the action against the Japanese. The 40th Naval Construction Battalion had been assigned to reconstruct Momote airfield but found themselves defending it's Northern edge instead against the Japanese attack along the road. The 5th Cavalry also defended the airfield straight after landing. These reinforcements were able to turn the tide against the suicidal and useless attacks of the Japanese.

The stage is set, the battle lines are drawn and you are in command. The rest is history.

Japanese Player: Take 5 Command Cards

American Player: Take 6 Command Cards

Conditions of Victory:
6 Medals

The CP hex village hex of Jellies are temporary
medal objectives for the Japanese player.

If the Japanese player can clear the airfield and
have one of his units on it he gets a temporary
medal. If the unit is removed the medal is lost.

Special Rules:
US Marine Corps rules are in effect even though the US troops
are cavalry. The Cavalry units move and battle like normal infantry.

JIA command rules are in effect but Japanese do not get bonus dice when
banzai charging.

US player may play any Recon Card as a Barrage to represent
offshore warship support.

The US Atillery unit with 1 figure is a mortar. It fires
2,2,1,1 and can move 1 and battle. It does not count as a
medal if destroyed. Place the Marine badge on it to destinguish
it from other units.

Night attack rules are in effect.

CP rules are in effect. (If captured, opponent looses one
command card.
