Historical Background:
During the autumn of 1944 the German Fourth Army was engaged in defensive fighting around Gumbinnen in East Prussia. After the Russian 88th Guards Division had succeeded in occupying the town of Goldap on 21 October, the Russian front line formed a salient skirting Goldap. This salient led from the northern tip of Lake Goldap past the western limits of the town and then continued in a straight line southeastward, parallel to the Goldap-Treuburg highway. Approximately 2 miles south of Goldap the Russians had occupied an advance position on Mount Goldap, whose 1,014-foot elevation afforded a commanding view of the surrounding territory. The Russian line was fortified by many entrenched positions, barbed wire and minefields. In the town of Goldap 4 T-34's were held in reserve and a Russian Artillery unit was in place. Two T-34's were dug in at the entrance of the highway to the town.
Toward tihe end of October the commander of Fourth Army was ordered to retake Goldap. The plan he drew up called for an envelopment to be launched early on 3 November with the 50th Infantry Division's infantry and engineers advancing from the southeast while the Fuehrer Escort Brigade was simultaneously driving down from the northwest. The two attack forces were to pierce the Russian lines at the base of the salient, envelop the enemy garrison in and around Goldap, annihilate the Russians within the pocket, and thus re-establish a straight front line east of the town. The Engineers were to take Mount Goldap and neutralize many of the Russian defenses.
After two days of bitter fighting the plan was carried out to it's fulfillment despite vicious Russian counter-attacks with tanks, break-out attempts, and flexible Soviet artillery fire.
