Historical Background:
On day two of Operation Barbarossa the German's in the area of Lozadijai had penetrated all the way to the Neimen River where they had established a bridgehead. A few Russians were still holding out in the bunkers by Lozadijai. On the evening of the 22nd the division was spread out over a wide area. About 2200 the firing of small arms was heard coming from behind the front line near the town of Seirijai. After suffering initial confusion the German command realized the units in the town were coming under attack from armed civilians.
On the 23rd the Germans tried to flush the forest of the partisan threat that was cutting their supply lines. After the initial attack three German companies were soon bogged down by surprisingly stiff partisan resistance. By the end of the day the operation had ended in failure.
The next day the Germans planned a better attack. After a largely ineffective artillery bombardment the Germans systematically attacked the partisans forest positions. They made good progress and by the end of the day the partisans had been killed, captured or expelled from the forest. It was estimated that the partisan force was 400 to 500 strong and made up of cut off Russian soldiers and Russian citizens.
