Historical Background:
When Finland surrendered to Russia in the fall of 1944, a major terms of the armistice was that the Finns were required to remove the German army from Finland. One of the major engagements in what is known as Lapinsota ("Lapland War") was the Battle of Tornio.

As the Germans withdrew up through northern Finland to Norway, the Finns launched an unopposed sea invasion at Tornio, near the Swedish border, with the goal of getting behind the German line. The Germans counterattacked Tornio from the north and from Kemi in the south. Control of bridges and roads was critical, and vital to the German supply line.

Over an eight day period, the Germans made several attempts to recapture Tornio but failed. The German army in Finland was effectively cut in two, and their supply line was now much longer as Tornio could no longer be used as a supply base.

The conflict raged over 8 days, from Oct 1, 1994 to Oct 8, 1944.

Conditions of Victory:

The town of Tornio is worth one Victory Points for the Russians. The Russian only gets the Victory Point while he occupies the marked hex. If he vacates the hex, he loses the Victory Point.

The bridge across the Raumo River and the road intersection to Rovaniemi were also important, and thus worth a Victory Point to each army. Your unit must occupy the hex to gain the Victory Point. If you vacate the hex, you will lose the Victory Point.

Special Rules:
The two rivers are frozen and are hazardous to cross.
Hint: When moving a unit, you can often avoid the frozen hexes by moving just one hex at a time. Note that this trick does NOT work when retreating.

The Finnish Special Forces Infantry are ski troops.

The Finnish armored unit starts below strength (2). It may be built up to a full strength of 3.
