The destruction of the German 6th army released many Russian units for the new offensive aimed at Kharkov and Dnieper River. At first it appeared that the Germans would be able to hold Kharkov, but there were just not enough German units to cover the whole front. All along the front Russian units slipped through the cracks in the German defensive lines, & position after position had to be abandoned.
To the East of Kharkov, Elements of the German 1st SS Panzergrenadier (LAH) Division had already fended off several Russian attacks around the perimeter of Kharkov. On the 15th of February, Elements of the Russian 111th Rifle Division, supported by Elements of the 12th Tank Corps launched another broad attack East of Kharkov, just south of Rogan.
The Russian were unable to take ground against the Elite SS Panzergrenadiers, however with the sudden appearance of KV-1 Heavy tanks the tide almost turned in favour of the Soviets. Accurate German AT fire heplped win the battle for the Germans as it destroyed or drove of the Russian Tanks. The Victory was in vain however as Russian troops threatened to break through in other sectors, and the Germans pulled out of Kharkov against Hitlers orders. Within a month, the German would reclaim their lost ground.
