By the 24th of June 1941 Elements of the German Infantry Regiment 505 had now advanced to within 7 miles of the Fortified Town of Liepaja in Latvia. The German Commander Colonel Lohmeyer had been reinforced by Elements of the Naval Assault Detachment 530 under the command of Lieutenant-Commander Schenke. The following day an attempt was made to take the Medieval Town by surprise. The Assault failed despite a courageous attempt by the German troops to storm the city walls across a narrow peninsular that linked it to the mainland. Worse still, seeing the Germans in retreat the Russian Garrison launched an immediate counterattack which pushed the Germans further back and even threatened their Artillery positions, before being turned back. On the 27th, the Russians launched another Sortie out of the Town and broke out of the encirclement to the coastal highway in strength. Only a furious counterattack by the Germans closed the gap and forced the battle back to the city gates. After a slow and costly advance, the Germans managed the break through and clear the Southern portion of the port. The next day Commander Colonel Lohmeyer ordered the German forces to capture the rest of the town. After taking Heavy losses over the last few days, the Naval Commandos were looking for some payback.
The Town proved to be very hard to reduce. The Soviets had heavily fortified many buildings throughout the town to serve as strong points, as well as the Russians typically tenacious ability to defend, helped to compensate for the Germans Soldiers experience. Despite close cooperation by the German Regulars and Commandos, the town had to be taken block by block with Heavy casualties. Many Soviet strong points could not be taken. The German commander finally reneged, & called for Artillery to reduce these strong points. Still, even under near continuous Artillery bombardment, & more Assaults from German troops, it would take another 2 days before all Soviet resistance was eradicated in Liepaja.
German Player: 5 Command Cards
You move first.
Russian Player: Take 3 command cards (Russians are surprised). Draw two cards after turn 1. You will then have a hand of 4 command cards for the rest of the battle.
Conditions of Victory:
Objective locations do not count as Victory medals.
If the Russian Garrison HQ has no Russian units in any of its 3 hexes, & at least 1 German unit in any of those hexes, the German side wins immediately.
Blitz Rules are in effect (see p.4).
Russian Command rules are in effect (refer to p.3).
The German Special Force Infantry are Naval Commandos. Treat them as Combat Engineers for rules purposes. Place a German Engineer Badge in the same hex with these units to distinguish them from the other units. See p.6 for details about Engineers.
The Fortified Buildings hexes are treated as Churches for Rule purposes.
The 3 Hex Garrison HQ are treated as Fortresses for rule purposes.
