After the disastrous defeat in the Battle of Kursk, German forces in central Russia south of the Kursk bulge established defensive positions anticipating a Russian counter offensive. German plans called for them to withdraw to more defensible lines just outside of Kharkov. However, when the Soviet offensive was launched on the 3rd of August the plan had not yet been properly executed, and, the Russians achieved complete surprise. The Russian offensive was fierce and swift, with many German units (cut out were) left to find their own way out from behind enemy lines. Meanwhile other German formations moved back and forth fighting battle after battle in attempts to slow the Soviet advance. On the 8th of August, Panzergrenadier Division Gro▀deutschland was released from its reserve status and moved to take up a blocking position on the bridge head east of Akhtyrka. From that position it began to launch local counterattacks attacks on Russian forces attempting to force a breakthrough in the area. On the 14th, the Division was given the task of neutralizing a small Russian bridge head in their sector. Due to the terrain of the area and forces involved in the operation, it was decided that just destroying the bridge in the area that the Russians had been using to re-supply there forces would be enough to eliminate the Soviet threat. Panzer Company (Funklent) 311 with its self-propelled B IV demolition vehicles was chosen to lead the assault to destroy the bridge.
The Gro▀deutschland Grenadiers probed ahead of the vehicles to cover the approach of the ridge overlooking the bridge. Oberleutnant Bachman moved his demolition team into position. The overwatch positions overlooking the bridge were gained with out much fighting. The supporting German assault guns were able to assume hull down positions overlooking the bridge The demolition vehicles were set into place by their drivers who then abandoned them with their 500kg demolition charges. Each controller guided the B IV towards the bridge from the safety of their StuG IIIs. The Russians remained wary, firing only intermittently. Thus the B IVs were able to reach the bridge without incident. Once on the bridge, the drop mechanism failed to release the demolition charge, and with the arrived of new Russian reinforcements, Bachman ordered the charge be detonated inside the vehicle. The subsequent explosion totally destroyed the bridge. The Grenadiers were able to withdraw with their mission accomplished.
The stage is set, the battle lines are drawn, and you are in command. The rest is history.
German Player: 5 command cards
You move first
Russian Player: 4 command cards
Conditions of Victory:
If the German side destroys the bridge they win immediately.
The German Special forces Tank unis are remote controlled B IV demolition vehicles. They may only be ordered if within 3 hexes of a regular German tank unit. They move 3 hexes but never battle. An ordered B IV demolition vehicle that ends its move on a bridge may attempt to destroy it. Roll 3 dice, if a star result is rolled the bridge has been destroyed, if no star result was rolled that unit takes 1 hit damage. These units do not count as a victory medal when eliminated. Place a German Special forces badge on these units to distinguish them from other units.
All German infantry units are Panzer Grenadiers. They may move 2 and still battle.
Units marked with Battle Star tokens are Camouflaged units. Camouflage rules are explained on page 8 of the Pacific expansion rulebook.
