On June 22nd, operation Barbarossa struck the Soviet Union. In contrast to other Army Groups, Army Group South would have to fight against solid defences, skilfully lead, and, determined Russian troops. By the 23rd, a breach had been torn between the Russian 5th and 6th Armies, things were looking ominous for the Soviets. The Germans now drove for Dubno. On the 24th, the military commanders of the South-West front decided in execution of Timoshenko's directive No. 3 to launch an immense Armored counterattack. The 6th Mechanized Corps was assembled and thrust into the flanks of Panzer group I, in the 3rd largest tank battle of the campaign so far.
The Russian tanks and infantry scrambled into battle and clashed in a huge four day battle that involved several hundred German and Russian tanks. During the night of the 26-27th, Ryabyshev's 8th Mechanized Corps was ordered to fight it way to Verba Berestechko. With his units still scatted, Ryabyshev formed a mobile force with units from the 34th Tank Division. This force burst into the rear of the German 11th and 16th Panzer division that were driving for Dubno. The Red Army tank units continued to press forward on the 27th, but the 16th Panzer Division kept the Soviet mobile force from linking with other Russian units at Dubno. By the 29th, all hopes of the Russians linking up were dashed. The mobile group, now fearing encirclement, broke out to the East and made it back to the Russian line in August.
