Historical Background:
The base of the 8th Army defence was the Alam Halfa ridge, & the foundation of this defence known as the Western Spur. By midday the 15th Panzer Division had fought its way to the Ridge, in spite of the Death of its Commanding officer General Georg von Bismarck and the wounding of DAK commander General Walther Nehring. The attack was lead by some MK IV with long barrelled 75mm guns that took out several Grants at long range. Just as the 15th Panzer Division was gaining momentum, the 5th Royal Tank Regiment was thrown in to stem the tide.
The 21st Panzer Division also pushed the attack along the Western Spur, under sustained Heavy Air attack from RAF aircraft who all but halted the attacks of the less eager Italian Armour. Here too the MK IVs had long range on the Grants & Major Alexander Cameron's "A" squadron lost three Grants before they even got a shot off. Acuate British artillery & air strikes forced the Germans to move closer on their enemy, however the British gunners held their nerve. While the Panzers had closed to a range of 300 yards, a murderous barrage of 6-Pounders was added to the artillery & air strikes already crashing o the Germans. With the timely arrival of the Royal Scots Grey, the assault on the Western Spur was checked, & the 21st Panzer division fell back.
