Historical Background:
06th of June 1944 - Sword Beach.
With the support fire of "Bombarding Force" and field artillery pieces shipped in LCTs, DD amphibious tanks of 13/18 Hussars and "Flails" of 22th Dragoons were the first to land on Sword Beach at 07h20. 10 minutes later, 20 landing crafts landed infantrymen of 8th Infantry Brigade (3rd British Infantry Division), 2nd East Yorkshire Regiment on Queen Red sector and 1st South Lancashire Regiment on Queen White sector. Houses on the seaside had been fortified by German defenders who opened a heavy fire on the landing troops. In front of Wn18 German strongpoint at Hermanville-la Brèche (codenamed "COD" by the British), East York soldiers suffered heavy losses (200 men in crossing the beach). In the second assault wave, commandos units landed at their turn. On Queen White, 41st RM Commando had to seize Lion-sur-Mer then get liaison with Canadian troops landed on Juno Beach. On Queen Red, 1st BFMC (1er Bataillon de Fusiliers Marins Commandos), the only 177 French commandos of Kieffer, had to seize Riva-Bella and to capture the "Casino" strongpoint, while 1st Special Service Brigade under the command of Lord Lovat had to take Ouistreham harbor then to advance inland to join British paratroopers at Pegasus Bridge. At 12h00, in spite of casualties, all objectives of 8th Infantry Brigade and Commandos were realized. The advance towards Caen could began.
