Historical Background:
Oberst Bacherer, commander of the Kampfgruppe from 77.ID, was in charge of the defense of Dinard, west part of the "Festung" (fortified camp) Saint-Malo.The main defensive line was just ahead of Pleurtuit village, and composed of minefields, hedgehogs and barbed wire, under the fire range of machine-guns spread out in farms or hedgerows. On the 7th of August, the 121st US Infantry Regiment (8th Infantry Division) attacked with three battalions. 3rd battalion bypassed the German left flank and was surrounded in the enemy lines during four days, 1st battalion which advanced under deadly fire of machine-guns entrenched in "La Vieuville" farm, was decimated. US command, with the set back of this first attack, ordered to 331st US Infantry Regiment to help the 121st. On the 12th of August, it was the decisive battle, the "lost" battalion" was delivered, "LaVieuville" farm was captured after a bloody close combat. Dinard was reached in the evening of 14th of August, but the battle of Pleurtuit had cost about 600 casualties (KIA) to the GI's of the 8th Division.
The stage is set, the battle lines are drawn, and you are in command. The rest is history.
