On the 16th of December 1942, together with the surrounding of German 6.Armee at Stalingrad, the Soviet Army launched the operation "Little Saturn" with the aim to destroy 8th Italian Army and the remnants of 3rd Romanian Army. General Gariboldi ordered to a battlegroup of Alpin Division "Julia" to take positions at Seleny Iar to reinforce "Cuneense" and "Cosseria" Divisions already engaged against the soviet offensive. From 20th of December to 14th of January, Italian units reinforced by some German "Stug III" of Panzerjäger Abteilung.385 defended the sector Ivanovka/Seleny Iar to the Russian soldiers of 167th Rifle Division by a temperature of 35°C below zero. On mid-January, bypassed by 40th Soviet Army which broke through the 2nd Hungarian Army, the Italian units had to withdraw before to be surrounded and abandoned their positions hardly defended.
