The invasion of Poland had begun. 19th Army Corps of General Guderian advanced in the Chojnice area. German 76.Infanterie Regiment was fighting against a mix of Polish infantry and cavalry units. 18th Regiment of Pomeranian Uhlans had spotted a German infantry unit stationed in a clearing of the Tuchola forest. Colonel Mastalerz decided to charge the enemy with two squadrons of his regiment. The charge was successful and the German soldiers were disbanded in the wods. The clearing was held by the Polish troopers when several German armored cars of the 20. Aufsklärungs Abteilung appeared suddenly on the forest road and opened fire on the troopers exposed in the clearing. It was a massacre and only some troopers escaped in the deep of the forest. The Polish cavalry charge had nevertheless disorganized the German division and its advance was delayed for a while. On the next days, Italian and German war correspondents were on the battlefield seeing the bodies of the polish troopers laying in the clearing, some German tanks arrived after the battle were waiting at the same place and for the war correspondents it was a chance to write a good article on the heroic Polish cavalry charging German tanks with swords drawn. The legend was born and was accentuate by the German propaganda during the war and is still alive nowadays.
